If you’re in the market for a new snow blower, you might think all home centers have basically the same selection. But that’s actually not the case, even between popular chains like Lowe’s and Home Depot.

“Not only does Lowe’s have specific models and brands not available at Home Depot, but it also has one of the best selections of two-stage models, which is the most popular configuration,” says Courtney Pennicooke, a Consumer Reports market analyst. However, you won’t find many three-stage snow blowers at Lowe’s; Home Depot has the market cornered on most of those.

    More on Snow Blowers

Below, you’ll find the very best snow blowers from our tests that are sold at Lowe’s, including electric and gas options. While you won’t find any three-stage models here, our tests confirm that a strong two-stage snow blower can clear just as effectively. Our picks feature snow blowers from Ariens, Craftsman, and Snow Joe.

For more information on all types of snow blowers, see our snow blower buying guide. CR members can also turn to our complete snow blower ratings, which include almost 80 models in six configurations.

    How CR Tests Snow Blowers

To test snow blowers, we turn the scene outside our Yonkers, N.Y., headquarters into a virtual blizzard. Our testers throw more than one million cubic inches of saturated sawdust—CR’s proprietary blend of fake snow—on the ground and use it to identify the best new models that can clear a driveway.

When mounded together, this mixture can also simulate a plow pile, like the ones your town’s plow service may leave at the foot of your driveway. Our sawdust blend gives us a consistent substance to plow for judging each snow blower. In each test, we measure how fast the machine cuts through this mixture, how far it’s thrown, and how clean the surface is left. In addition to these three tests, we also factor in brand reliability and owner satisfaction into each snow blower’s Overall Score.

    Types of Snow Blowers

Not sure what the difference is between a single-stage and three-stage snow blower? On the "Consumer 101" TV show, CR expert Dave Trezza explains to show host Jack Rico everything consumers need to know about these snow-tossing machines.
