An EcoDiesel badge from a recalled Jeep Grand Cherokee

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling over 58,000 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs and Ram 1500 trucks with 3.0-liter diesel engines. A problem with a sensor inside the engine might cause the vehicles to stall suddenly. If that happens when they're in motion, it could lead to a crash. Similar FCA vehicles that don't have 3.0-liter diesel engines aren't included in this recall.

In a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), FCA says that there have been 1,020 warranty claims due to this problem, but that it's unaware of any related crashes or injuries.

The Details

Vehicles recalled: 58,016 SUVs and pickups with 3.0-liter diesel engines.

• 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs manufactured between June 9, 2014, and March 29, 2016.
• 2014-2018 Ram 1500 pickup trucks manufactured between June 13, 2014, and March 7, 2018.

The problem: A part inside the engine called a tone wheel may lose its magnetic coating over time, which will make it unable to send an electrical signal to the engine’s crankshaft sensor. If this happens, the vehicle will no longer be able to sense how much fuel to send to the engine and when to send it, risking an engine stall.

The fix: FCA dealers will update vehicle software to prevent a stall if the tone wheel fails.

How to contact the manufacturer: FCA says the recall is expected to begin Oct. 2, 2020. Owners may call FCA at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 20V475. FCA’s own number for this recall is W58.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
