Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling more than 154,000 Jeep and Dodge vehicles because of a brake-system issue.

The automaker said that a faulty brake-system component installed on some vehicles earlier this year may cause bubbles to form in the brake fluid, which could increase stopping distances.

There have been no reports of accidents or injuries due to this issue, FCA said. The automaker found the problem after being notified by its supplier and said that as many as a third of the affected vehicles are still on dealer lots. According to FCA, “dealers have been advised which vehicles are affected and are providing service accordingly.”

The Details

Vehicles recalled: FCA is recalling 154,337 SUVs and minivans:
2018 to 2019 Jeep Compass SUVs manufactured between March 17 and June 21
2019 Jeep Cherokee SUVs manufactured between April 4 and June 21
2018 to 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan minivans manufactured between April 11 and June 14
2018 Dodge Journey SUVs manufactured between April 12 and June 14

The problem: The rear brake-caliper pistons “may have an insufficient coating,” which could cause gas pockets to form and potentially reduce rear brake performance, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Although brake function would remain, the automaker said that “stopping distances may be increased.”

The fix: Dealers will bleed, or drain, the vehicle’s brake-fluid system and refill it, NHTSA said, at no charge to owners.

How to contact the manufacturer: NHTSA said that the recall is expected to begin Sept. 23, 2018. In the meantime, owners can call FCA at 800-853-1403 or contact their local dealer.

NHTSA campaign number: 18V523. FCA’s number for this recall is U86.
