A black truck that's part of the Ram pickup truck recall.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is expanding its recall of Ram pickup trucks because of concerns that the tailgate could open unexpectedly.

The expanded recall is for 2013 to 2018 Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickup trucks. If these vehicles are in motion, there's a risk that cargo could tumble onto the road, creating a dangerous hazard, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The problem is the power-locking mechanism within the tailgate. There's a piece in the assembly that could fracture and release the latches, allowing the tailgate to fall open.

The initial recall covered more than 400,000 Ram pickup trucks. This expansion adds 693,128 trucks.

A spokesman for Fiat Chrysler told CR in an email that the company is unaware of any injuries or accidents related to this problem. More than a third of the trucks initially included in the campaign have already been fixed, he said.

The initial recall was issued in 2018 and covered certain 2015 to 2017 Ram pickup trucks with a power-locking tailgate. It was then expanded in May 2019 to include 2015 to 2017 trucks. This new expansion is a result of FCA reviewing customer warranty claims and internal repair orders related to this problem.

Owners of vehicles in the initial recall were notified at the end of June. Owners of vehicles in the expanded recall will be notified during September. Dealerships will install a stop block to prevent the tailgate from opening unexpectedly.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t have any. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
