More Diesel-Powered Jeep SUVs and Ram Trucks Recalled for Stalling Issue

Owners of these EcoDiesel-equipped vehicles will need to get a free software update

Jeep and Ram are recalling over 80,000 diesel-powered 2014 to 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs and 2014 to 2019 Ram 1500 pickup trucks because they might stall while driving.

The problem has to do with a faulty tone wheel, which is a part that helps synchronize several of the engine’s many moving parts. If the tone wheel fails, the engine might stall while the vehicle is in motion, which could cause a crash.

    MORE ON CAR RECALLS

This recall is the most recent in a series of issues involving 3.0-liter EcoDiesel diesel engines that Jeep and Ram introduced in 2014. Those include a class-action lawsuit over emissions, complaints that the emissions fix reduced vehicle performance, two fuel pump recalls involving stalling, and another recall related to the tone wheel.

According to documents the automakers provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Jeep and Ram say that dealerships will be able to fix this latest issue with a free software update. The automakers say there have been over 600 reports of stalls involving the vehicles recalled today, but no crashes or injuries.

    The Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs with 3.0-liter diesel engines manufactured between Dec. 19, 2012, and Oct. 13, 2019
    • Ram 1500 pickup trucks 3.0-liter diesel engines manufactured between June 12, 2013, and Dec. 13, 2019

The problem: The magnetic surface of the engine tone wheel could delaminate over time, which could cause the crankshaft position sensor to lose its ability to synchronize fuel injection and cam timing. If this happens, the engine could stall without the ability to restart, which could cause a crash.

The fix: Jeep and Ram dealerships will perform a free software update that allows the crankshaft position sensor to operate even if the tone wheel fails. This fix will be free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep and Ram, at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V411. Stellantis’ own number for this recall is 66A. This recall is an expansion of recall 20V475.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
