Toyota is recalling approximately 1 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles from the 2020 and 2021 model years because their passenger airbags might not properly deploy in a crash due to a faulty sensor.

    The recalled vehicles include:

    • 2020 and 2021 Toyota Avalon and Avalon Hybrid sedans

    • 2020 to 2022 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid sedans

    • 2020 and 2021 Toyota Corolla sedans and hatchbacks

    • 2020 and 2021 Toyota Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUVs

    • 2020 and 2021 Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid SUVs

    • 2021 Toyota Sienna Hybrid minivans

    • 2021 Lexus ES250 sedans

    • 2020 to 2022 Lexus ES300h hybrid sedans

    • 2020 and 2021 Lexus ES350 sedans

    MORE ON RECALLS

Toyota dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the faulty airbag sensors. As with all recalls, the fix will be free of charge.

A Toyota spokesperson told Consumer Reports the automaker would like to refrain from commenting on whether there have been any crashes or injuries related to the issue, or how Toyota first discovered the problem.

    Toyota Airbag Recall Details

The problem: The issue has to do with a faulty occupant weight sensor, known as an Occupant Classification System (OCS). If the OCS short circuits, the airbag might not deploy as designed in certain crashes, which could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

The fix: In a written statement, Toyota said it will notify owners of recalled vehicles starting in February 2024. Toyota and Lexus dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the OCS sensors, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can contact Toyota at 800-331-4331 or Lexus at 800-255-3987 if they have any questions.

    NHTSA campaign number: 23V865000.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
