Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Replacement of compressor"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"System was leaking dealer replaced the A/C Compressor. The warranty had expired 5 days previous. I live in the northeast only use it a few months a year"

Anthony M., MA (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)

"compressor seized warranty replaced evidently this is common in this model"

Charles W., NC (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)

"AC compressor leaked and had to be replaced. Cost was $833 to replace. Prior to this, the AC line bracket leaked and had to be replaced. That was another $509. Expensive climate system."

Anonymous, IN (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Compressor was leaking coolant. It was still under warranty."

Anonymous, OR (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The A/C stopped cooling and the condenser had to be replaced"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"ac compressor locked up"

Kenneth V., PA (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 4.3-L V6)

"The A/C stopped working. The dealership replaced the compressor under my extended warrantee"

Kenneth R., TN (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"Compressor seal leaked, it was replaced with a new A/C Compressor."

Richard J., SC (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The compressor failed completely and locked up. The engine compartment started smoking to the point I thought something may have caught fire. I parked the truck in a safe location away from all buildings and cars in case it did ignite."

Joseph B., MT (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.2-L V8)

"Truck started blowing hot air. Took it to the shop and they said there was a freon leak, so they put died freon in the system. The following day it started blowing hot air again. Compressor needed to be replaced...apparently a common problem with these trucks. Just out of warranty too, so I had to pay out of pocket."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)
Condenser

"A crack were two parts were welded The new part was reinforced in this area Poor engineering you never weld to a tube without a fish plate"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"There seems to be a crack in a condenser closest to the radiator which caused all the Freon to leek out. it will be repaired but it will be expensive. My mechanic says at least 5 -6 hours labor alone. We feel that this must have been a faulty part, since the truck has not been damaged ever."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Condenser did not work because of leak at the seam, all of the coolant escaped."

Anonymous, KY (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Crack tubing"

Edmond C., CA (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Condenser was leaking refrigerant. First recharge was within GM’s 3 year 36k mile warranty period. Condenser was replaced and system repaired successfully just outside of warranty period at no cost to me, because of previous history. And I’m assuming also because it was a known and common failure in this model vehicle."

Elliot L., NH (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 4.3-L V6)

"Condenser failed (leaked). Apparently this was a huge problem model-wide, and it took several months before parts were available. I was very disappointed that GM did not cover the cost of this repair, even though my truck was out of warranty by only a couple of months."

Christopher B., WA (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The AC condenser started leaking Freon. A vehicle this new should not have this problem. DeNooyer Chevrolet in Holland quoted me $1400 to fix/replace. Another repair shop did the work for $690."

Roger R., MI (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

David D., KY (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Evaporator

"Has a leak at one of the seams"

David B., NV (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"The common problem on the Silverado, a cracked refrigerant line at the condense"

Anonymous, VA (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 4.3-L V6)

"The a/c system stopped working. The dealer found a refrigerant hose leaking, probably caused by a previous replacement of the compressor 18 months ago by another dealer."

"One of the Hoses from the AC Compressor started leaking and had to be changed out and New Refrigerant added , , , I hear that this has happened on a lot of CHEVROLET Silverado's from 2014 thru 2016 . . . Since this this is Not Safety Equip. , GM refuses to do a Recall on this item . . ."

Richard S., FL (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 4.3-L V6)

"The manufacturers bracket needed to be replaced because it wasn't braced properly in manufacturing. The manufacturer stated this was a common issue. But the customer pays because it isn't a warranty item."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Since buying new in 2014, the vehicle has experienced two separate AC failures involving failure of the Condenser (1st failure) and Compressor (2nd failure). Both failures were due to the loss of AC fluid brought about by the hoses leaking around their connection point to the AC hose connection block. The block was not changed when the Condenser failed, resulting in the failure of the compressor. None of these failures were considered by the dealer to be warranty repairs even though their failure to replace the block resulted in the failure of the Compressor."

William L., VA (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Got vehicle in cold weather so did not discover problem until warm weather when warranty ran out. Dealer did want to honor warranty."

Charles O., KS (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The dealer service department couldn't identify the problem. They originally said I had a casting defect. I'd love to know how they arrived at that conclusion through diagnostic tests. Then a few days later, they stated I had a bad coil pack and injector. Then it changed to 3 bad coil packs. They did not have the parts in stock, which tells me this must be a bigger recurring problem with this motor size (5.3 liter). Finally they got the parts and repaired my truck after 2 1/2 weeks. They then told me they replaced all the coil packs. They didn't do it out of the goodness of their heart. There's a problem with this engine size. I'm very unhappy with this vehicle and extremely dissatisfied with the repair department."

Glenn F., AZ (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Had two injectors go out within a week of each other. Personally, I think the repair shop did something wrong during the first repair, causing the second injector to fail."

"A check engine light came on. The truck was not running smooth. I brought to truck to the dealer, Autonation Chevrolet Arrowhead in Peoria, Arizona. Initially they told me there was a casting defect in the engine and they would have to replace the engine. A few days later, they said it wasn't an engine casting defect, but there were a few bad fuel injectors. They had to wait for parts. (apparently, there is a issue with these fuel injectors, so there was a shortage of the replacement injectors). Finally they received the parts and replaced all the fuel injectors. So far so good. Based on their history, I don't have a lot of faith in them. We'll see. The worst dealer service department I've ever experienced."

Glenn F., AZ (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Fuel lines rusted and bad fittings. Fuel lines had to be replace."

Mary B., WV (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"intermittent rough idle at start. Check engine light came on, was diagnosed at the dealer 3 times. First time they could not duplicate the problem. Second time it was recommended to have the fuel injectors cleaned (I had to pay for this). The last time they changed a fuel injector. Have not driven more that a few miles since. Note that the very first time I had this problem I had the code read for free at an auto parts store. I looked the code up online and found that typically it was caused by a faulty fuel injector. I passed this on to the dealer but they didn't change the fuel injector until the third time I brought in the vehicle. I took the dealership up on their offer to split the deductible on my extended warranty."

Loose/rattling heat shield

"The engine goes fro 8 cylinders to 4 cylinders to increase the mileage (at higher cruising speeds). There apparently is a valve in the exhaust system that opens and closes as it changes from 8 cylinders to 4 cylinders. The valve squeaks when this valve would change. I brought the truck in after 6 months after purchase for this squeak. At first, they could find it. As I drove off the lot, it continued to happen. I brought the truck back and they stated CHEVROLET had put a bulletin out regarding this valve squeaking. Thus they replaced the exhaust system. Here I am 3 1/2 years later and the squeak is coming back. They stated the 36,000 mile warranty had just expired and it wasn't covered. I'm waiting for the squeak to get louder and more pronounced and then I will be calling the GM general manager to discuss this issue. They know somethings wrong with this valve but they refuse to announce it as an issue or recall. NEVER AGAIN. And this is my second Silverado."

Pipes

"They had to replace the entire exhaust system. There is a "diverter valve" in the system that opens and closes when the engine goes from a V8 to a V4 for better gas economy when on the highway. That "valve" was squeaking. It seems as though the dealer had an advisory on the problem. They didn't fix it the first time. Then they replaced the entire exhaust system to resolve the problem"

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Bushings

"The vehicle started making noise when backing up, and turning the steering wheel. it eventually started making the noise all the time. I took it in and was told it was a bushing in the steering that needed replaced. This vehicle is driven a lot, but under normal road conditions. I have never had this problem on any other vehicle I have owned."

Anonymous, NE (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)
Power steering pumps and hoses

Anonymous, NE (2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)
Wheel bearings

"4WD front hub bearing both went on this truck with under 90000 miles. Front stabilizer bar links snapped under normal usage. Transmission required a complete rebuild after losing 3 gear (automatic) after 102000 miles. Electrical systems are poor--wiring shorts, cracks, or fails often. Front airbag senors have been replaced multiple times...same ones, as well--over again. O2 sensors at rear banks (after catalytic convertor) are flaky. Spent $4500-$5100 this year on transmission rebuilt, premature brake pad wear, O2 sensors, 4WD hubs/bearings, + alternator replacement. This is too much for 1 year."

What Owners Say

Spark plugs or wires failure

"When I went on a trip to Florida when it only had 8800 miles on it, the spark plug wires on two cylinders disintegrated and had my wife and I stranded in NC. Then this month it did it again on a different cylinder. GM refused to pay for the most recent occurrence, and never compensated us for the set back on for our travel set back in NC"

What Owners Say

Torque converter

"developed a vibration at specific RPM range 1200-1700 at about 35,000 miles. Progressively worsened, dealerships would not address the problem stating that it was supposed to do that. It certainly is not supposed to have the vibration, I know others with same vehicle, no issue."
