Road Test

"At approximately 160,000 I noticed a strong vibration in the vehicle when driving on the highway at certain speeds. It began when driving around 100km/h, peaked at 110 km/h. My mechanic (whom I trust very much, is very knowledgeable, and has serviced my vehicles for 15 years) was able to rule out the tires, tire balancing, or anything in the front end. This issue is still being investigated (delayed due to cover-19) but he has narrowed it down to the driveshaft either being out of balance or twisted. Based on his conversations with other service centres he is leaning towards the diagnosis being a twisted driveshaft. My own internet searches confirm highway vibrations for F150s are common. My mechanic says he will have to remove the driveshaft and send it to a local repair shop."

"The very common timing chain stretch issues with the Eccoboost, dealer did something to make it run past the warranty, even though fault codes for replacement were to replace the timing chain. Then it kicked in a again a thousand miles later, caused metal all through the engine, and warranty would not cover, and I had to pay for a Ford rebuilt engine. 3,000 miles later, the engine caught fire and left my kids and I stranded in the mountains in the middle of a snowstorm. We had to walk 12 miles in the freezing weather, to help. Ford did not stand behind their truck, and all costs fall on me. About 40,000 dollars of repairs so far, to a truck I also just paid off from new. Ford F-150 Eccobost was great, until it hit 100,000 miles, then worthless, plus a money pit. I do not know what to do, but Ford Customer Care said, oh, it is past warranty, all costs, all repairs, all is your responsibility, sorry, that is the facts Sir."

"I bought it "as is" from an out of town dealer, within a week it was surging, low power, no gas mileage and the check engine light came on. I took it to my local dealer and they say the timing chain is bad and has to be replaced. They checked the VIN records and this truck has had similar problems in the past, before I purchased it. I looked for this 3.5 V6 because it was supposed to have plenty of power and good gas mileage. They are going to have to take the front of the engine off to repair it. I am advised that it will cost about $2000 to fix it. I have only owned it a month. I have not paid to have it repaired yet."

"At about 70,000 miles, the turbos started to make a whining sound upon acceleration. I had the vehicle under a warranty with Carmax and brought it in to one of the local authorized repair shops affiliated with the warranty. They never fixed the problem and carmax says since "they" didn't do the work I'd have to bring it back to the shop that did the work. NO recourse at all. At 95,000 miles the engine made a loud rattling sound at startup. (After sitting overnight). Did my own research online and found a Ford TSB that implicated the timing chain and cam phasers are the problem (timing chain gets stretched and tensioners do not prevent rattle). Had to replace timing chain and phasers. Also, on this 2014 3.5 liter eco boost, the coils regularly fail (fist on at 65K miles) along with spark plugs. I've replace 3 already. Ford never contacted me about any recall on this engine and they should have in my opinion. I have been a loyal fan or ford since I was a kid. Guess what? That has changed after my experience with with this "lemon." The engine should never have been brought to market along with transmission issues with the 6 speed transmission...rough. Bottom line..the turbos still whine, the engine still rattle upon start after sitting for a day or two (although, not as bad as original sound)."

"Issues with the coil happened 3 times. Check engine light comes on and power loss. Engine just stops. Issue involves spark plugs white ceramic cracking (you can see the scorch marks on outside of plug). The fix is to replace the plug and coil. Reliability factor is an issue. I hesitate to go on long trips for fear this issue will reoccur. It is only a question of "when", based upon my experiences. I have never had anything like this occur with any of the numerous other vehicles I've owned over the years."
