We tested two versions of the Ford F-150 pickup: one with the new 5.0-liter V8 and the other with an EcoBoost turbocharged V6. Performance numbers for the two engines were nearly identical overall, but we liked the V8's sound better than the more high-tech V6's. Both of our trucks got the same fuel economy -- 15 mpg overall, which was then strong for the class.

Ron D., NY (2014 Ford F-150 FX4 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"At 25000 miles the front brake pads cracked in half, all four pads were broken in half. Both front rotors were warped and also damaged with hair line cracks. The dealer would not do anything to help me.I replaced everything myself with Wagner QTX High Performance pads and rotors."

Rotors

"Rotors were turned and replaced 3 or 4 times until we figured out that the brake lines had collapsed and were engaging the calipers and heating the rotors"

Anonymous, VA (2014 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"The front rotors scored deeply very early which caused the brake pads to wear out prematurely. I had all 4 rotors replaced with a better grade after market unit and new pads installed. Reading the CR charts it seems I am not the only one who has experienced brake problems with this year/model Hope you have something in the survey about the tires they put on this series. I have some real information about that and how Ford handles their problem"

"Rust formed on rotors creating grooves in rotors."

Raymond C., OH (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"Rotors that come stock are light and warp easily. Both the front and back rotors are warped on my F-150. This is likely so Ford can claim a better gas mileage. They need to be replaced with higher grade rotors to prevent warping again after so few miles."

Keith P., OR (2014 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)

"at 20,000 miles, rotors were warped and caused the brakes to pulsate."

Anonymous, OR (2014 Ford F-150 Limited 3.5-L V6 turbo)

David H., VA (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.7-L V6)

"At 20,000 miles, the rotors developed patchy glazing making braking very choppy. Replaced them with aftermarket rotors and new brakes"

Michael F., TX (2014 Ford F-150 Platinum 5.0-L V8)

"Rotors were replaced to solve the pulsation and vibration problem"

Julie E., WA (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"Actually the lug bolts twisted off on 3 of the wheels, Issue not clearly identified. Could have been over torqued or could have been faulty lug bolts"

Floyd J., AB (2014 Ford F-150 FX4 5.0-L V8)

"The front in breaks would vibrate and the rotors were warped. This appears to be a common problem but Ford made me pay for it even though it was under warranty. I also had to pay for new brake shoes in the front"

Ralph W., CA (2014 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Ford front rotors are not holding up to boat trailering - a single run towing the trailer will warp the rotors, causing vibration on stopping. Rotors are not up the published trailering capacity"

Anonymous, TN (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Front rotors warped causing vibration and pulsating BEFORE 24000 miles"

Thomas B., SC (2014 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"I had to replace the front rotors after 32,000 mile of use"

Michael R., TX (2014 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"The rotors were warped and cracked in less than 25000 miles. This caused the vibration in the steering wheel. To me this was a total failure on Ford using cheap parts from China and they said it was my fault."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford F-150 STX 3.7-L V6)

"Rotors have worn out twice and have had to be replaced. Ford dealership also installed one of them backwards requiring a return visit"

"seem to rust because lack of miles driven"

Squeaking

"When starting out after truck has been sitting, brakes have very loud squeak. Goes away after driving a short distance."

Mike O., IN (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"under warranty rotors had to be turned to eliminate noise and this did not solve the problem. still makes a noise"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"The squeaking brakes have been changed by Ford on two occasions with only limited success to stop the problem. Ford continues to say the brakes are just glazed over and no other problem is occurring."

Anonymous, LA (2014 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"After Ford put new brake pads on it squeaks in the morning"

Anonymous, AL (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"When backing of our garage in mornings the brakes squeaks like a warn break pad indicator, but have less than 30000 miles on vehicle Not usually when going forward"

Philip B., AZ (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

Anonymous, (2014 Ford F-150 Unsure Unsure)

"Problem still exists and it is sporadic. No repair yet."

Anonymous, (2014 Ford F-150 XL 5.0-L V8)

"The parking brake squeaking is related to the pedal not fully releasing. Problem persists but I just reach down and lift the pedal to fully disengage. Too expensive to fix since I can work with it. One day I will have it fixed."

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Back up camera has a short some where. Periodically fails, screen will say “camera failure”. The next time I back up it works fine."

Mike O., IN (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"In Jan. 2019, the drivers side door indicator stopped working. This caused warning signals to to be triggered whenever I drove over 15 MPH. Also the auto door lock did not function. After replacing the door latch, the problem continued and my mechanic was unable to determine the cause. The dealer was able to correct the problem at considerable expense. They blamed it on an aftermarket remote starter installation. Currently, my back-up camera does not function. I haven't tried to correct this yet."

Anonymous, VT (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)
Display screen freezes up

"Sync 2, screen will not shut down. Restart of the truck sometimes fixes the problem but sometimes it takes several tries. Intermittent problem cannot be replicated easily."

Bob S., PA (2014 Ford F-150 Platinum 5.0-L V8)

"The SYNC system has failed in the truck and I am unable to use any of the SYNC features in my truck. I have been told that it will cost a lot of money and time to remove the existing head unit to determine what the problem is, and then on top of that it could cost $600 for a new head unit."

Jon S., KY (2014 Ford F-150)

"System occasionally will not shut off. Normally opening the door with the key off shuts everything down. I have witnessed this happen, and once when going away fro a week trip, I returned to a dead battery likely caused because the system did not shut down"

Bob S., PA (2014 Ford F-150 Platinum 5.0-L V8)

"driving down the road and interior lights start to blink, and go out and on .some times ok other time terrible.dealer could not fix,and they told me they could not find a fix thru ford.i am now looking for a new gmc truck"

Karl S., NY (2014 Ford F-150 Lariat 6.2-L V8)

"It's actually the Audio Control Module, a problem Ford knows about and most Ford F-150 forums talk about. It's a $600 repair to replace with a 1 year warranty, which many F150 owners have had fail a second time. Not worth the risk. Plan to have an aftermarket system put in."

Anonymous, KY (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)
Display screen goes blank

"Display screen failed and had to be replaced. But, it was still under warranty."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Sync Keeps losing my Address book. No FREE upgrade."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.7-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"This GPS system using Sync 2 uses an SD card to authorize GPS. The system often will indicate the card is missing when indeed it is installed properly in the slot. Takes several removals, installs and restarts to clear the problem. Intermittent."

Bob S., PA (2014 Ford F-150 Platinum 5.0-L V8)

"Navigation system uses an SD card plugged into a slot inside the center storage console. The nav system often indicates falsely that there is no nav card installed. Must shut the vehicle down and restart, sometimes several times"

Bob S., PA (2014 Ford F-150 Platinum 5.0-L V8)

"Ford GPS is terrible - shows vehicle off road by 10 - 50 yards, driving in unmarked or unmapped areas when vehicle is ACTUALLY on a road - can be highway, 2-lane road, limited access, etc. - does not matter, GPS is unreliable. This is a KNOWN Ford issue and has no fix from Ford"

Mike S., NC (2014 Ford F-150 Lariat 6.2-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Periodically bluetooth will just turn off and stop working. Bluetooth and audio inputs are no longer recognized by the radio. The Media button is unresponsive. The quick temporary fix is to pull the radio fuse, wait 10 seconds and reinstall it. The reset of cutting complete power to the radio fixes the problem. It will occasionally come back, but it could be 4 months or a year and a half, it's random."

Anonymous, CT (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Dropped phone pairing during dialing on bluetooth / sync system"

Anonymous, AB (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"My iPhone 6s failed to connect through Bluetooth to the SYNC system. I had to pull the fuse for the radio to reset it. Once it was reset by cutting it's power through the fuse panel, I was able to connect without a problem. The reset button in the SYNC menu failed to fix the problem."

My mechanic (whom I trust very much, is very knowledgeable, and has serviced my vehicles for 15 years) was able to rule out the tires, tire balancing, or anything in the front end. This issue is still being investigated (delayed due to cover-19) but he has narrowed it down to the driveshaft either being out of balance or twisted. Based on his conversations with other service centres he is leaning towards the diagnosis being a twisted driveshaft. My own internet searches confirm highway vibrations for F150s are common. My mechanic says he will have to remove the driveshaft and send it to a local repair shop."

"The very common timing chain stretch issues with the Eccoboost, dealer did something to make it run past the warranty, even though fault codes for replacement were to replace the timing chain. Then it kicked in a again a thousand miles later, caused metal all through the engine, and warranty would not cover, and I had to pay for a Ford rebuilt engine. 3,000 miles later, the engine caught fire and left my kids and I stranded in the mountains in the middle of a snowstorm. We had to walk 12 miles in the freezing weather, to help. Ford did not stand behind their truck, and all costs fall on me. About 40,000 dollars of repairs so far, to a truck I also just paid off from new. Ford F-150 Eccobost was great, until it hit 100,000 miles, then worthless, plus a money pit. I do not know what to do, but Ford Customer Care said, oh, it is past warranty, all costs, all repairs, all is your responsibility, sorry, that is the facts Sir."

I took it to my local dealer and they say the timing chain is bad and has to be replaced. They checked the VIN records and this truck has had similar problems in the past, before I purchased it. I looked for this 3.5 V6 because it was supposed to have plenty of power and good gas mileage. They are going to have to take the front of the engine off to repair it. Anonymous, (2014 Ford F-150 FX4 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"At about 70,000 miles, the turbos started to make a whining sound upon acceleration. I had the vehicle under a warranty with Carmax and brought it in to one of the local authorized repair shops affiliated with the warranty. They never fixed the problem and carmax says since "they" didn't do the work I'd have to bring it back to the shop that did the work. NO recourse at all. At 95,000 miles the engine made a loud rattling sound at startup. (After sitting overnight). Did my own research online and found a Ford TSB that implicated the timing chain and cam phasers are the problem (timing chain gets stretched and tensioners do not prevent rattle). Had to replace timing chain and phasers. Also, on this 2014 3.5 liter eco boost, the coils regularly fail (fist on at 65K miles) along with spark plugs. I've replace 3 already. Ford never contacted me about any recall on this engine and they should have in my opinion. I have been a loyal fan or ford since I was a kid. Guess what? That has changed after my experience with with this "lemon." The engine should never have been brought to market along with transmission issues with the 6 speed transmission...rough. Bottom line..the turbos still whine, the engine still rattle upon start after sitting for a day or two (although, not as bad as original sound)."

What Owners Say

Gear selector or linkage

"A clip connected to a cable broke and i couldn’t shift my truck in to any gears. The tow truck driver said he see this often almost on a daily basis he deals with it. I would think this should be a recall item if it is that prevalent."

Slipping transmission

"the automatic trans has a very bad hesitation when accelerating, which can put me in a dangerous situation if I need to get out of the way in a hurry. Have had this problem since day 1. All the time! The dealer doesn't experience the problem. One service writer said ford knows of this problem"

Larry G., CA (2014 Ford F-150 XLT 3.7-L V6)

"Ford can't find the problem. Sometimes while idling, it feels like I've been rear ended. Cost me $99.00 for diagnostic fee when they can't find the problem"
