With the launch of the redesigned F-150, Ford broke all of the rules for pickup trucks. From its much-touted aluminum construction -- shaving about 700 pounds from the old model -- to available small-displacement twin-turbo V6 engines promising the power of a V8 but with better fuel economy, Ford has shaken things up in a category not known for innovation. It has bet the farm on the biggest-selling vehicle in America.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Ford F-150 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"The touchscreen freezes and the screen has mind of it's own. The consoles constantly drops my cellphone!"

Linda B., CO (2017 Ford F-150 King Ranch 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Entire entertainment system lagging. GPS, Radio, Nav, Voice Command, all. Been back to Ford twice, not fixed yet."

Oscar W., TX (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Operation of touchscreen would become sluggish and difficult to use, Bluetooth connection to phone would randomly disconnect then reconnect later, GPS warning light would illuminate"

Anonymous, GA (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"The display screen freezes on all items, even climate controls. , radio, temperature settings, etc."

Jeannie D., TX (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"This included many of the items on the previous list. The IPIM module failed."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)
Display screen goes blank

"The display has gone blank at startup 3 or 4 times since I bought it. It only returned on a restart a few minutes later. A few months ago a technician unhooked the battery for a short time which supposedly rebooted the system. No problem since. Fingers crossed."

Thomas D., OH (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"The sync3 master control stopped working, affecting all of the vehicle components I checked off. Once the component was replaced, all systems operate correctly. Since this is a third party supplied part and is linked to the VIN, it took an ungodly amount of time for the part to be manufactured and shipped to the dealer. From first reporting the issue to repair was three weeks."

James K., NY (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Backup camera/display failed by going blank and freezing up; therefore, the dealer repaired it under warranty after 18 months by replacing the entire system since it could not be repaired. Ford farmed out the service replacement to a local technician and provided me with a loaner vehicle until repairs were completed."

Skip T., GA (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)

"Display screen has froze up, totally quit working, etc. on several occasions. Everytime I take it to the dealer, they say they cannot duplicate what I am complaining about (although I have actually been to the dealer and the service manager has viewed the problem first hand). This has happened several times and it results in me taking my F150 to the dealer and leaving it a couple or hours of sometimes 2 days. They run all sorts of test and basically when they call to tell me its fixed, all they tell me is they did a software update, or rebooted the system ... and this usually causes me to have to pair my phone again with the unit and upload all my phone contacts ... AGAIN!"

Henry M., AL (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"In 2017 Ford does not support USB 3 which came out in 2009. Attempting to use a USB 3 device generates a excessive power usage. USB 2 no problem"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"When listening to music from and iPhone using Bluetooth, the speakers went to maximum and could not be controlled. We had to get out of the vehicle and wait for it to time out."

Anonymous, AB (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"You cannot use your current location to set a Fovourite. You must have and address, intersection, or city. Farm and ranch trucks are often in places where there are no addresses. If TomTom and Garmin can do it, Ford can do it"

John W., AB (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)

"System would not show traffic. Fordreplaced the display module which fixed the problem. Only issue was I had to leave the car with them for a week."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"The problem started when the GPS would not load. It stayed on a screen with a spinning circle with the text Loading Maps At the same time this occurred I was unable to use the cell phone with the car. On top of this issue, I went around with the dealership getting it fixed and it ended up takin almost a month to correct. They told me that there was no error code being produced and Ford won't cover parts without a code. I ended up calling Ford corporate customer service. They assisting in getting the issue resolved and gave me free wipers, filters, and oil changes for the length of the lease."

Gary H., MI (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"The problem is with the Sync 3 system. This is the second time it has broken down on a road trip to Oregon. The GPS either stopped working completely or the location icon was not following the road we were on. When the touch screen was tapped, it either did not respond at all, or it took minutes for it to respond. That is not exactly convenient when driving. It will go back to the dealer for repair in two days. The first time it was under warranty, and it should be this time also. From now on we will take an old Garmin GPS with us just in case it stops working again."

Lynn F., CO (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"The menu system is NOT user friendly. An example is canceling trip is not easy to fund under menu or system. That function is buried not obvious or intuitive. It's rather obtuse."

Hoyett B., TX (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"On occasion the GPS Tracking arrow wonders off course and re-routes. it usually corrects itself within a 1/4 mile and will say stay on the route (I-84 East)."

Richard L., MA (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 5.0-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"the infotainment system is hard to navigate and not intuitive"

Donald C., AZ (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"Lost Bluetooth pairing and had to have Verizon correct the problem, Ford said they fixed it but did not."

Richard L., MA (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 5.0-L V8)

"Bluetooth music connection failed. After several attempts to fix via updates the dealer replaced the APIM unit under warranty"

Anonymous, MS (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 2.7-L V6 turbo)
Radio

"When changing stations, touching the screen does not work until minutes later. If you touch repeatedly, the preset will reset to the station you are on, not to the station that it was previously set for."

Lynn F., CO (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Speakers

"Loud screeching sound in 1st week of ownership. Fixed in one dealer visit but two day wait for part"

Peter F., PA (2017 Ford F-150 XL 5.0-L V8)
Voice control commands

"I think it's tied to sync. it usually just shuts down. I hate it. I won't buy another ford because of it"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford F-150 XLT)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"Alignment issues with door closing"

Patricia N., FL (2017 Ford F-150 XL 3.5-L V6)

"Drivers door does not fit correctly. Dealer adjusted door & now you have to "slam" the door to get it to latch completely. Either the door or the cab opening is out-of-spec. FORD has ignored a request (complete with pictures) for evaluation made by the dealer. I'm not happy"

Stanley N., MI (2017 Ford F-150 XL 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"all 4 doors leak road water up inside them. contacted dealer who was clueless. contacted ford customer service and after a long wait they said there is no problem and ended complaint. the seals at the bottom are very flimsy and do not seal. am totally dissatisfied with ford customer service and told them they should be ashamed to sell a product like this"

Joe V., WV (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"The doors were put on crooked at the factory and shipped to the dealer. The dealer had to adjust all four doors in order for them to mount properly. On the the driver's side in particular, both doors were one quarter inch out of alignment and easily noticeable. My gut feeling tells me that there is very poor quality control at the Ford F-150 assembly plant for trucks coming off the assembly line."

Craig S., IN (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Read doors have needed to be repaired as non serviceable."

Anonymous, NS (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"The driver's door has been adjusted twice by 2 different dealers & it is obvious the door will never fit correctly. I use the passenger door as reference. Sorry, but I'm going to tell you about an issue that irritates me. When they changed the oil pan (leak) they obviously had to change the oil & filter. When I got home I checked the oil & it looked like there was > 1000 miles on the oil. i've never seen new oil on a dipstick after an oil change that looked USED!"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford F-150 XL 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"We noticed right away when we received the vehicle that the passenger door was not in alignment from top to bottom. It did not sound alarm, but we noticed this spring that a crack had formed at the top of the door ."

Anonymous, AB (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Locks and latches

"Lock on passenger door was broken when vehicle was received"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Ford F-150 XL 3.5-L V6)

"recalled"

Anthony D., CA (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"there was a recall on locks & latchs water entering and freezing up"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"door latches wont engage in cold weather. Have to drive holding doors closed by hand. Initial recall did not fix the problem."

David D., IN (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"There has been a recall on the issue and I had it fixed twice. Either the dore was frozen shut or if open would not latch which made it totally unsafe to drive in frozen weather and I live in Ohio. I have had previous cars where the lock froze but never had a car where you could not shut the door."

William B., OH (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Mirrors

"Heated mirror on driver side did not work. replaced mirror."

Joseph W., OR (2017 Ford F-150 Raptor 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"All 3 mirrors in the truck have been replaced. The interior & right outside mirrors under warranty. I paid for the left outside mirror because it was so loose, but did not meet factory rejection."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford F-150 XL 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"Plastic parts on the Driver side mirror keep coming apart."

Randall A., TX (2017 Ford F-150 King Ranch 5.0-L V8)
Sunroof

"Panaramic sunroof came off track. Required new track to repair. Took 4 days at dealer. Roof still occasionally sticks."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Went to open the panoramic sunroof and the sunroof came out of it's track and would not reseat. Had to return to the dealership. Vehicle was still under warranty. Dealership replaced entire panoramic sunroof. No issues since."

Robert S., WA (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"tailgate step would not deploy. The mechanism needed to be replaced."

Joseph W., OR (2017 Ford F-150 Raptor 3.5-L V6 turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"total electrical system failure. Truck could not be jump started, Towed to dealership."

Robert M., TX (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)
Engine knock or ping

"Loud engine knock and rattle at startup began to occur at 54,000 miles. Under investigation at Ford Dealer - believed to be cam phasers and timing chain which will both require dealer replacement."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Oil leaks

"The oil pan leak was a known issue according to dealership techs. The silicone seal failed, and it's apparently a common issue."

Patrick C., KS (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"oil pan leaked - Ford replace it"

Anonymous, SD (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Oil pan leaking at top seal"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"At 3900 miles the oil pan cracked. the truck was in the Ford repair garage for eight days waiting for parts to arrive. They told me this engine has a plastic oil pan. I didn't hit anything on the road and the garage mechanics couldn't tell me why it cracked."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"the engine pan leaked. Dealership fixed it"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6)

"I read that late model F-150 trucks were using a plastic oil pan which was sealed to the engine with liquid gasket material. The gasket was prone to failure. Voila! I discovered oils stains on my driveway. Dealer confirmed the issue and repaired the problem."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Leak was from the plastic drain plug on the oil pan. a problem they have had on that year. They removed and replaced the oil pan and serviced for no charge, warranty issue."

Dennis W., ID (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Had to have ford drain oil pan and reseal"

Michael K., MT (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Oil pan leaking around the seal. Replaced 3 oil pans to date."

Edward B., AL (2017 Ford F-150 XL 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"Oil pan on the Ecoboost engine leaks. Dealer tried claiming it was because I didn't change the oil soon enough! Saving grace is that the truck has an automated system to tell you when to change oil so they had no ground to stand on. Turns out the truck has a factory design problem and many of them leak. Dealer had to replace it as it leaked before 1st oil change and then again afterward."

Chris V., OH (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"Ford has produced a faulty oil pan - we've had it replaced 3 times now; they are using a sealant that does not hold up to the winters here in Canada. We just had it replaced for the third time yesterday."

Anonymous, AB (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Had an oil pan leak that took my local Ford dealer 4 days to fix, which to me is excessive."

B W., AZ (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Oil pan leak. Faulty gasket & or pan. Replaced under warranty."

Anonymous, NE (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water leaked into the cabin from driver door - plastic seal not installed properly - leaked into front foot well. Sunroof did not have a drain attached - water therefore leaked into rear cabin - both resulted in mold in the cabin as carpets saturated. Both issues from the factory fixed under warranty - require cabin and roof lining to be stripped."

Neal R., BC (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Body seal leak, do not have sunroof. Continues to fill passenger side door sill."

Oscar W., TX (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"sun roof broke 2 times had to take to dealer 4 times afraid to use now."

Leigh M., FL (2017 Ford F-150 King Ranch 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"The truck box floor is not sealed to the box sides even after the $550.00 Ford box spray bed liner option. There are 12 very easy to see cracks along the sides and front of the box floor"

John W., AB (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)
Squeaks or rattles

"For a $65k luxury truck, the amount of interior rattles is unacceptable. There are rattles in dash, the center stack, the center console and the rear doors on both sides."

Patrick C., KS (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Seatbelt coiling system rattles inside the side panels"

Herbert H., ON (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"Problem with IWE valve causing vacuum leak and making the 4wd try to engage on its own producing a very loud metal grinding noise in the front wheel hubs. This is apparently a very frequent problem that Ford is trying to deny and will not issue a recall"

Yves B., NC (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Grinding noise while in 2WD, when switched to 4WD the noise stopped, Dealer repaired/replaced components of 4WD system"

Anonymous, WI (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"Vacuum seal on 4wd needed to be replaced because 4wd would try to engage whenever ice got in the system"

Keith F., NY (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Breakdown of 4WD activation control components. Dealer repaired under warranty."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"unlike other Ford trucks that I have owned, this particular truck has a very restricted turning radius in 4WD. I cannot make any kind of a sharper turn (beyond 90 degrees) without the system grinding and bucking. I have taken it to the dealer twice so far but nothing has changed."

Bill J., NE (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"Front driver side IWE needed replaced. Was done under warranty."

Traction control

"when accelerating on wet pavement, the rear tire would spin."

Archie G., NY (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 2.7-L V6 turbo)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine consumed lube oil at a high rate, but not smoking, then lost oil pressure at 5000 miles."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Engine oil leak in turbo. Excessive smoke from exhaust."

Anthony D., CA (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"It took several extended visits where the F150 was left for many days due to engine problems that made the truck undrivable. Each time the dealer claimed “problem solved” but it would return again within a couple of weeks, beginning with engine warning lights coming on, engine pinging and knocking, oil levels dropping, etc. No oil on driveway, however, so clearly leaks were internal but the dealer steadfastly resisted acknowledging that maybe, just maybe, this was a problem due to poor manufacturing. Finally, on third extended repair visit, under possible threat of legal action, Ford authorized full replacement of the engine. With the new engine, all the previous problems have gone away and the truck is a pleasure to drive."

G C., MA (2017 Ford F-150 XL 3.5-L V6)

"Engine developed internal noise. Dealer determined that rod bearing spun and ruined crankshaft. also left debris throughout engine. Put in new short block engine with new heads. Vehicle was in shop nearly 3 weeks waiting on parts, etc. All was covered by manufacturer warranty."

Anonymous, NE (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 2.7-L V6 turbo)
Head gasket

"I had a check engine light come on.Still under warranty, took it to Ford and they diagnosed as bad intake manifold.Replaced it for no charge. No problems since."

David W., WV (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)
Timing belt or chain

"I only have 38000 kms on the odometer. Recommended oil change intervals have been followed. Despite this and using synthetic oil the F150's timing belt has stretched. I knew this happens with the older eco boost engine but the problem is still prevalent with the newer models"

Dave C., AB (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"Dealer expects to replace the timing chain along with cam phasers due to loud engine startup knock and rattle."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

Gary C., GA (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7-L V6 turbo)

"Section of the truck surrounding the headlights was painted a different color but was hard to tell unless you looked at it real close and could see that it was a metallic flake paint whereas the rest of the truck was not metallic flake paint"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford F-150)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Brake failure light and alarm sounds intermittently. Seems to be related to temperature (more prevalent in on warmer days) and while cruise control is on and engaged"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Master cylinder

"At 9000 miles, the master cylinder gave out creating a severe safety hazard. Fortunately, no car was coming when I coasted through a stop sign."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)

"There was a problem with the master cylinder that caused pedal fade when the brakes were applied. The Ford Dealer repaired the problem under warranty and provided a free loaner care while the work was done."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)

"The brakes are spongy. I reported this to dealer within 2 weeks of purchasing. Dealer worked on it and said this is the way its supposed to feel. Second time dealer replaced Master Cylinder. Still feels spongy. Dealer says brake pedal is supposed to go to the floor when holding for an extended period. I am getting used to it but not happy with the brakes. Will probably not purchase another F150 (this is my first F150) ... again unless I am guaranteed this spongy feel is gone!"

Henry M., AL (2017 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"At 9000 miles, the master cylinder went out and I couldn't stop. Many reported similar issues online. Seems to be related to vendor change."
