We appreciate the selectable full-time 4WD and standard stability control (optional on non-crew-cab versions) on the 1500. The diesel engine in the heavy-duty Silverado 2500 LTZ (which we also tested) proved to be relatively civilized. A backup camera display in the inside of the rear-view mirror is available. Stability control is standard on 2500 single rear-wheel extended and crew cab models with the 6.5-foot box.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Fuel injection system

"Last summer the truck started flipping to "limp home" mode when I was pulling 10,000 pounds of horse trailer and using the A/C. One mechanic changed the fuel filter, didn't help. Dealer said that impurities in the diesel fuel had scoured out the insides of the fuel injectors. $7,000 to get a rebuilt one installed"

Sharon P., MD (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"Every once in a while I get a check engine light and it indicates lean condition. I erase the code and it reappears sometimes after idling a long time"

Anonymous, ID (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.0-L V8)

"Injectors failed by allowing too much fuel to pass through their "bypass" system and preventing the high pressure fuel pump from creating adequate pressure. All 8 injectors needed to replaced for over $5,000. CHEVROLET claims this is due to poor fuel filtering, which is rubbish as I have only used OEM AC Delco fuel filters and I have changed them before the truck's computer asked me to. This is a known issue with the CHEVROLET Duramax LMM engine, and it's an expensive repair."

Anonymous, MN (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"I don't recall exactly what the bottom line problem was, but the symptom was that while pulling a load, especially up a hill, the engine light came on, then the engine power decreased down to practically nothing. Could only go about 5 mph. Also, the 'change fuel filter' indicator said it needed to be changed (even though we had just changed it). We discovered that we could stop, reset the fuel filter indicator, wait about 10 minutes, and then we could keep going. We also discovered that as long as we kept the RPM under 2500, it wouldn't do that. We took it to the dealer 3 times and they were unable to determine what the problem was at first, because they were unable to recreate it. The first time, they just changed the fuel filter. The second time was a different dealer, and he just said he could not recreate it. After the 3rd time that it happened, we were able to more fully describe everything that we did to temporarily 'fix' the problem, and told them they just had to figure it out, period. They were finally able to fix it, but I just don't remember exactly what it was."

Anonymous, MD (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Unsure 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Gauges

"The fuel gauge starts reading "empty" when there are still about 10 gallons in the tank. I told a dealer about it and they said it would cost $150 just to diagnose the problem, and I didn't want to spend that much. So I just keep track of the mileage and I know I can get at least 250 miles on a full tank, and I stop and get fuel before that."

Anonymous, MD (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Unsure 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"The temperature gauge would quit and tell the computer to turn the A/C off and say it was overheating ( it was not overheating ) truck ran fine. It was a short in the instrument panel"

Anonymous, TN (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.0-L V8)

"brake pads and rotors were worn out"

Anonymous, CO (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Parking brake

"The parking brake became hard to engage. Eventually the cable itself that actuates the parking brakes broke. We went to the dealership and had it replaced, and they said the system was 100% fixed. They were wrong. It was still unreasonably hard to engage the parking brake. We took the truck to an independent mechanic, and he determined that the mechanism inside the brake drum had rusted so badly it was very difficult to move, and that was the heart of the problem. He replaced those parts and it works as new. It was disappointing that the dealership missed the root cause and an independent shop found it."

What Owners Say

Transmission leaks

"High pressure line replaced due to a leak!"

Anonymous, (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"The truck would slip out of gear on occasion. A month or so later, the truck went into "limp mode" due to the transmission. There is an electrical harness within the transmission. A plug of sorts protects this harness from transmission fluid. The plug had been leaking for sometime on the inside, so no fluid on the ground. The plug failed completely and shorted out the harness causing the truck to go into limp mode. It is also believed that it caused our batteries to die early, and at the end, radio to fry."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"The climate control would scroll to the hottest setting independent of what the control wheel was set at or if the whole system was turned off. The tiny relay switch (three times), control electronics, motor, and finally the wiring harness were all repaired. The issue (wiring harness) took a long time to diagnose. The dealer was great about working with me and GM to get the parent company to cover some of the expense and for repeat work the dealer covered that. All in all it was a 3 year $3.5k issue."
