The Silverado 2500 HD (for "heavy duty") and its near twin GMC Sierra 2500 are true rough and tumble workhorses, but with enough creature comforts and modern amenities, they serve as versatile mobile workplaces. High points include a diesel powertrain that's cultured and brawny, and an intuitive infotainment system. However, for day-to-day comfort, we'd avoid the super-stiff Z71 suspension.

Reliability

We expect the 2022 Silverado 2500HD will be more reliable than the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2020 and 2021 models. Select the used car model year to see reported issues with those similar past models.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

I filled the DEF tank, started the truck, and the DEF indicator went to 24% and stayed there. I had to take the vehicle back to the dealership and they had to reset the DEF system to get it to show 100%. I've done research on the internet and have found that many people are having the same problem with Silverado Diesel trucks. So far the manufacturer has done nothing to correct this ongoing and widespread problem."
