2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Reliability - Consumer Reports
The Silverado 2500 HD (for "heavy duty") and its near twin GMC Sierra 2500 are true rough and tumble workhorses, but with enough creature comforts and modern amenities, they serve as versatile mobile workplaces. High points include a diesel powertrain that's cultured and brawny, and an intuitive infotainment system. However, for day-to-day comfort, we'd avoid the super-stiff Z71 suspension.

Reliability

We expect the 2022 Silverado 2500HD will be more reliable than the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2020 and 2021 models. Select the used car model year to see reported issues with those similar past models.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

CD player

"It won't play or load cd."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.0-L V8)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The port for a flash drive sometimes just stops working. Start the truck, stop it, start it, doesn't make a difference... and then it does and it starts working again."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD WT 6.0-L V8)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"cooling system was low after 4000 miles. covered at next dealer service along with 2 other hidden recalls"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"OnStar satellite antenna became unsealed, allowing rain and car wash water to enter onto headliner. Dealer replaced, but warned to avoid car washes with brushes. That is unreasonable. GM needs to either relocate those antennas farther back to avoid car wash brushes, or redesign them more dome-like to allow brushes to glide over antenna."

Grace M., WA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"At 30,000 miles the steering stated to get tight. You could hear the power steering pump working too hard. The dealer determined that one of the tie rod ends was not taking grease. It took the dealership three attempts to get the tie rod end to accept grease. That fixed the problem."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Steering wheel vibration

"steering wheel vibration at 65-75 miles per hour"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.0-L V8)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Driveshaft or axle

"Bearing keeper failure"

Jim D., GA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Stability control (ESC)

"I use this truck almost exclusively for towing a 5th wheel trailer. When the dash lights came on saying that there was a problem with the stability control and trailer brake control, I was scared. The truck and trailer did not seem any different as I drove it, but I cannot have issues with these two systems and feel comfortable driving the units. After two trys to fix the issue, the dealer said that the problem was a rear brake sensor. I have not towed since this repair. I received a questionnaire from Chevrolet about the issue shortly after getting the repair done. The repair was covered by warranty and a recall notice."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"I was on a trip from Michigan to Washington State when the paticulate sensor connector failed and I was stuck in Boise ID while a new connector was flown to the dealership. Over the past year three of the eight glow plugs have failed and required replacement. It takes about one week to complete each of the glow plug changes. Waiting for the remaining five glow plugs to fail."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Heater system

"Fan would go on delayed, the doors wouldn't close tight if windows were up, they said the cab filter was plugged and that was why. They fixed it and it has been OK"

Sandy W., NY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.0-L V8)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"Diesel glow plug failure indicated but glow plug replacement didn't fix. Occurred 6 times causing check engine light to come on and remote start feature to be disabled. Finally dealer replaced computer. Has occured one more time but have not taken back to dealer to loose use for another three of four days."

Jim D., GA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"The paint when new must not have been cured and rain or water contaminated the paint which etched the paint and will not come out (black). I have had many new cars and none have spotted like this before"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"All of these systems quit working while we were towing a 10,000# fifth wheel trailer. This truck is used 98% for towing. Dealer reflashed the computer three times. An independent mechanic decided it was the grounding between the two vehicles, and added another grounding wire from the trailer to the truck frame. Problem solved."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

"The coolant light repeatedly came on. Was taken to the dealer for repair."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

"Transmission would overheat when using plow, which it was supposed to handle."

Sandy W., NY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.0-L V8)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.
