Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"The truck has been to the dealer 3 times for calipers locking. The get so hot they smoke and smell like they are burning"

Daniel K., MI (2008 Ford F-250 XL 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Front brake calipers lock up"

Nerry M., LA (2008 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.4-L V8 diesel)

Kirk D., ID (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"locked up"

Leigh C., NJ (2008 Ford F-250 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

"All 4 calipers have hung up significantly and caused unnecessary wear to the brakes. They have all been changed...one at a time since Ford won't change them unless they are actively hanging up. Horrible design and experience"

Anonymous, RI (2008 Ford F-250 XL 6.8-L V10)

"locked up"

Anonymous, VA (2008 Ford F-250 XL 5.4-L V8)

Anonymous, MB (2008 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"One rear after market caliper locked up in less than 10000 miles, both calipers replaced free by tire dealer that had installed previous caliper"

Anonymous, MI (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"At roughly 60,000 kilometers, I started having the brake calipers sticking and not retracting after the brake was released. This caused the rotors to heat up and warp. The brakes at this point really had averaged little use as most of the driving w"

Timothy S., BC (2008 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Rusty and seized real calipers"

Anonymous, BC (2008 Ford F-250 XL 5.4-L V8)

Anonymous, MI (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Not sure. The design causes calipers to be replaced too often."

Martha G., MI (2008 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"The calipers were frozen partiallu closed on the left rear. I do not drive the vehicle many miles, which I think it was part of the cause. Easily fixed."

Anonymous, MN (2008 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"I noticed smoke, and a hot smell from the L rear wheel. Mechanic stated that the calipers did not release. They needed to be replaced. They need to be driven more in winter."

Anonymous, FL (2008 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"We have read problems with this truck and are very disappointed that the dealership sold us the truck without giving indications that this truck line had a bad reputation. Ford should have a recall to fix the problems"

Anonymous, TN (2008 Ford F-250 FX4 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Routinely with every tank of diesel, the exhaust system regeneration would switch on creating terrible clouds of smoke choking innocent pedestrians and forcing vehicles traveling behind the truck to back off. With so much emphasis now on being "Gree"

Timothy S., BC (2008 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Dealer who made repairs said problem was due to use of type of diesel fuel. More the 5% bio diesel"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"EGR value failed and has been replaced. Check engine light with emission control codes relating to DPF has gone off multiple times and the dealer has yet to find out why. Theory is that a sensor is throwing the code because it is getting hot."

Anonymous, OR (2008 Ford F-250 FX4 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"To clean the exhaust system, it dumps fuel into the engine or somewhere to burn the excess whatever up. Numerous faults appear, the regen cycle takes forever in which you're supposed to continue to drive until the engine temp reaches a certain point to burn the excess fuel dumped into the system. Sometimes its not worth the time/fuel spent to keep driving when you don't want/need to."

Martha G., MI (2008 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Truck lost power especially when pulling an RV trailer. Engine was almost completely choked down and would not pull a grade."

Anonymous, BC (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 5.4-L V8)
Fuel leaks

"Ford 6.4 diesel eng. allow fuel to be sucked into the crankcase during engine regeneration. This is common. Fuel dilution of 10 % is common. Over time the bearings and eng. internal components will prematurely fail. Ford will not fix or admit proble"

Carl L., NJ (2008 Ford F-250)

"The design of the diesel emissions regeneration process for these engines causes fuel to be sucked into the crankcase. This causes extremely high levels of fuel in the engine oil amounts of 6 to 10 % . Over time this will cause the engine to wear out prematurely long before its normal lifespan. This premature failure has cost the owners thousands of dollars in repair. Diesel eng. is very expensive to repair more so than gas eng. Ford has created test that make it difficult to qualify for repair. Ford does not accept engine oil analysis that show high amounts of fuel in the oil. High amounts of fuel in the oil is dangerous. Engine oil analysis is the preferred way to test for high levels of fuel in the engine oil."

Carl L., NJ (2008 Ford F-250 Harley-Davidson 6.4-L V8 diesel)
Oil leaks

"THE rear seal on the engine leaked. The reason I believe this happened is THIS ENGINE MAKES ITS OWN OIL!!!! let me explain .I have had to EXTRACT a qt of oil every 1200 to 1500 miles do to OVER FILL of the crankcase. I have sent in a sample to OIL ANALYZERS LAB. The report came back FUEL DILUTION !! I wrote to FORD and they told me to take to my local FORD dealer. They had the truck for 4 days and could NOT find any thing wrong with it. STILL MAKING OIL!!!!"

William N., TX (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 6.4-L V8 diesel)

Radio

"Over the life of this vehicle I have had intermittent but severe audio distortion with the radio that each dealer says they cannot find even though when I drove the vehicle I had this distortion. Ford Motor Company Refuses to help me resolve this problem. Only after 7 years did I force the dealer to listen to the radio as I was leaving after service and finally they admitted to a problem. I still have a Major Problem with Diesel Fuel getting into the crank case. Ford does not recognize this as a problem and does not test for fuel dilution. Fuel dilution is a serious problem that No One wants to address. This is my most serious complaint. Consumer Reports is not concerned with this problem either. Fuel dilution in Diesel and gasoline engines reduces the life of the engine considerably. In gasoline engines it could be explosive."
