Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Following a hurried revamp, this version of Honda Civic was again competitive, if not class-leading. It rides a lot better, is quieter, has improved steering, and the interior looks much nicer. With its already spacious cabin, bulletproof reliability, and competitive fuel economy at 29 mpg overall, Civic is a safe, if somewhat conservative choice among compact sedans.

While still not as engaging to drive as some previous Civics, the updates improved the steering and made it one of the better riding compact sedans on the market. The 2013 freshening brought standard climate control to EX models, and a backup camera across the line, adding to the Civic's appeal.

"Blue tooth doesn't remain paired with my iPhone for no apparent reason and has to be frequently repaired"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Honda Civic EX-L)

"On 5 separate service visit we asked for help with the bluetooth, the techs played with it but said it was fine. I spent 15 mins on a internet search and found posted a HONDA SERVICES BULLETIN that exactly described the issue and what part to replace. Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"I don't remember exactly what the mechanic told me, but apparently something was out of place and damaged the caliper. He wasn't sure if it would happen again so recommended replacing two calipers w/ brackets, which pretty expensive. I expected just routine brake work."

Anonymous, MA (2013 Honda Civic)

"The right side calipers seized up completely, within 12 months of purchasing the certified pre-owned vehicle. the calipers destroyed the brakes and rotors, both of which were new when I took possession of the vehicle. While Honda covered the cost and repair of the calipers under the service agreement, they did not cover (or even cut me slack on) the cost of replacing the brakes and rotors (which were less than 12 months old)."

Anonymous, CT (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"had to grind the rotors and change the brakes as the as the brake pedal shuddered when pressed."

I returned the vehicle to the dealership and after discussion, the dealer replaced the parts required at no further charge."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear brakes wore out including badly rusted calipers while front brakes didn't need changing."

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Honda Civic EX-L 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I bought this car in 2015, it is a 2013 leftover that only had 6000 miles. I put 30000 in 3yrs. Recently both the front and rear brakes as well as the rotors were shot. I do not believe that it was due to my driving, I consider it premature wear and question if the brakes were the initially installed ones. Same thing happened last year, Only 24000 miles and I had to replace all 4 tires which were showing great wear the year before (just o/20000 miles"

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

"leaking failed"

Nick C., CA (2013 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The shocks on all four wheels failed and even when replaced with official factory new parts including new springs, the car remains overly bouncy and feels like the shocks have again failed after 6 months of normal driving."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to replace the shocks all the way around with only 70000 freeway miles on the car. Rear left tire was cupped badly. Drove 9 miles to have it looked at and in that distance the tire wore to the cords. Dangerous to drive further. Licensed mechanic said it was due to bad shocks. Over $1000 to replace. Our previous 95 Honda Civic had 385000 miles on it and never needed new shocks. I was and am very disappointed."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear struts completely worn out at 60,000 miles"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I started feeling as though something was rolling around in my trunk. I took everything out of the trunk but noise persisted. The noise turned to a rattling sound every time I drove on rough road. I am yet to get this resolved."

"leaking shock absorber"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Honda Civic Si 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"had to replace one shock due to failure"

Nick C., CA (2013 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Due to left front tire developing severe cupping in less than 50 miles it was recommended by two separate shops that we replace all shocks and have a all wheel alignment. This cost was over $1000 dollars. Was very unhappy as we have had both Honda and Toyota cars with over 200,000 miles that never needed new shocks and rarely required alignments. American made Honda? Sad to see the quality drop."

Tom S., CA (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Shocks were leaking."

Doug C., (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear shocks were leaking when bought 12-04-2016 with 50,000 miles. Replaced 5-5-2019 around 75,000 miles."

Anonymous, (2013 Honda Civic EX-L 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The vibration in the steering wheel is not resolved yet they keep going to the tires they won't check the axle or anything thing else I made sure it wasn't the tires by buying winter tires and wheels I am so mad the car does feel very install on a wi"

Tire wear is uneven

"We've put on three sets of tires had the car aligned, replace shocks and the car scallops the tires. The dealer has not been able to fix the problem"

Anonymous, UT (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Wheel balance

"Left driver's side tire loses pressure"

Michael J., CA (2013 Honda Civic EX)
Wheel bearings

"It is not wheel bearings but it is the closest to what is costing me the most. It is the tire sensor light comes on and I need to bring it back to shop to reset. I find out the third one in need of repair/replacement. First one was covered under warrenty. I paid ?$250.00 to have second one replaced and they replaced the 3rd one for free. I was told it was ongoing problem with 2013 Honda. Sensor was plastic (obviously faulty but not on a recall) and now they are made of metal."

Jayne M., MA (2013 Honda Civic)

"I have had problems with both front wheel bearings. Had to have the entire assembly replaced on both. Was causing loud roaring noise. Have had a lot of noise with this vehicle"

Anonymous, GA (2013 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"I took my car in because of suspension noise. The dealer diagnosed it as the right front wheel bearing needed to be replaced. The mileage was about 61,000 at the time, and seems low for this type of problem."

Anonymous, VA (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The wheel made a thunking sound. We took it to the dealer. The mechanic said it needed new wheel bearings on one wheel, due to the many potholes in our streets."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Honda Civic)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Slow air leaks from the wheel valve on all tires but passenger side most frequently. Bought new tires and still experience the leaks. I carry a tire pump in my car and have to inflate at least 2 tires every two weeks."

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"For a couple of months the check tire light would come on about every 2-3 weeks & the same tire would be low on air with no evidence of any punctures in the tire. The problem was found to be a leak around the tire sensor which required replacement."

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Water leaks through front passenger door during heavy rain while car is in motion"

Kevin D., WA (2013 Honda Civic LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"When first starting the car, there's a loud grinding, rattling noise from the front right side of the car. It's gotten worse in the past two years and was told it's attributed to a belt issue. It also seems to be related to the breaks in some way because it's loudest when I backing up with my foot on the break and lessens when I switch to drive. It's annoying more than anything and makes the car sound like it's worse off than it is."

Anonymous, SC (2013 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"not really sure what is doing the sound, tires or breaks or the body. The service center hasn't found anything wrong."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Honda Civic)

"The car makes a rattling noise sometimes going over certain kinds of bumps. This occurs going into the garage and on some roads"

Yuvraj A., CA (2013 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Vibrations that occurred and got progressively worse when the car passed about 50 miles per hour; the Honda dealer could not identify or fix the problem until the fourth visit"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Honda Civic EX-L)

"NOT a QUIET ride on good roads/street, but very noisy on bad roads/streets - sometimes embarrassing when other riders in car. This is not new with the 2013, but I just keep hoping that it will improve - this is my 3rd Civic, 2003, 2011 and the 2013"

"Sunroof rattled. Dealer fixed it"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Honda Civic EX-L 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Although this 6 year old vehicle has less than 20,000 miles on it and is garaged at least 60% of the time, the pain is fading dramatically. The white primary is beginning to show beneath the black paint. I have found that, generally, Honda vehicles do not have high quality paint jobs. I have owned four Hondas. I buy them for their reliability, not necessarily the quality of their paint."

"The airbag light comes on for no reason. Do not know if the airbags will even work when the light is on. Has been to the dealer at least twice. replaced items that they recommended and it did not correct the problem. They told me that the only thing that they could do next was replace the steering wheel airbag for $1000 or more at my expense. It should never malfunction in my opinion, and since the Government and insurance companies have colluded and mandated these devices to be put into all automobiles. If it fails than the manufacturer/dealer ought to be replacing the safety device for free. Have owned previous Honda Civic's and never had this problem with the airbags. Their is no definitive way to troubleshoot this device for defectiveness without causing it to deploy or activate according to the dealer. Takata and Honda wont do anything about this. I have reported to the Government as well, but no one will do anything about it. It is annoying and scary simultaneously."
