Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

Honda has redesigned its segment's best seller CR-V, and the result is better fuel economy, improved safety, sharper handling, and an upgraded interior.

The CR-V is small enough to navigate through tight parking lots, yet roomy enough inside to comfortably fit five adults. Despite a modest growth in dimensions, including two inches added to the wheelbase, the CR-V actually weighs about 75 pounds less than before and still manages to be significantly quieter and convey a substantial feel. We tested a base LX and the more mainstream EX. Both achieved impressive fuel economy of 27 and 28 mpg respectively in our testing, a new best for the class, excluding the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. As a bonus, the turbo makes for a peppier drive.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Honda CR-V owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"For the first month that I owned the car, when Android Auto was connected, calls kept disconnecting after a minute or so. The problem persisted for the first month. But now it works fine."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Honda CR-V EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"After app updates several months ago, unable to use voice commands to activate features. Google knows about it--widespread problem--but does not publically acknowledge or offer a fix."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Honda CR-V EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"ANDROID AUTO TRIED TO DO TOO MANY FUNCTIONS "AUTOMATICALLY". WE FOUND IT ANNOYING AND STOPPED USING IT.....RATHER QUICKLY."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Honda CR-V LX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Android Auto support is horrible in general. It only barely worked even when it did work at all, and then suddenly stopped working completely (software update?), generating false error messages (phone not connected when it was, etc). GPS maps don't appear on the console at all, etc. We basically consider that this stereo does not support Android Auto at all."

Doug L., NH (2017 Honda CR-V)

"Often doesn't sync up with my phone."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda CR-V)
Apple CarPlay

"iPhone will fail to connect or will randomly disconnect CarPlay session"

Eric O., WA (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Apple Car Play will not work at times and requires phone to be plugged in again until Apple Car Play works."

Henry V., MD (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This is common with all friend's with CarPlay. It depends on the users iPhone. The infotainment doesn't have enough onboard memory to keep up with CarPlay"

Michael V., TX (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sometimes it pairs then unpairs. Sometimes it doesn’t work correctly and I have to look at my phone to get messages(always while stopped)"

Jim G., FL (2017 Honda CR-V Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Intermittently stops functioning and claims no phone is connected. Usually I can restart by disconnecting and reconnecting 1 to several times. Occasionally I have to stop, shut off the car for a minute or two, and restart in order to get it to work."

Brian J., VT (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Apple car play must be replugged in any time the car is turned off even if you leave the phone plugged in when restarting the vehicle, sometimes takes several minutes for phone is plugged into USB for Apple Car Play. Can be frustrating"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The display head for the entertainment/ information Center had to be replaced."

Anonymous, CO (2017 Honda CR-V EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"CarPlay only connects the first time the car starts up about half the time. Then the iPhone 6s must be unplugged and replugged."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Apple Car Play is undoubtedly the most FRUSTRATING issue with owning this car. 1. Sometimes the unit does not recognize a phone is plugged into it. You have to plug & unplug multiple times. 2. The infotainment unit often freezes and there is NO way to control ANYTHING (you can't adjust volume, change audio source, etc.). 3. In fact, when this happens, the volume sometimes becomes unbearably loud and the only way to get the volume to change is by SHUTTING OFF THE CAR. Honestly, the volume will surge to deafening levels and you have no choice but to pull over and turn the car off. This is both a MAJOR safety concern, along with a tremendous nuisance. I'm certain I've caused hearing damage because I've been unable to pull over and forced to ride in a cabin with maximum volume levels. 4. At times, the display unit for the infotainment system just goes black. Then you have no control of anything. Again, the only way to resolve the issue is by shutting the car off and starting over. 5. Most annoyingly, Honda is providing NO solutions for this known issue and continues to blame Apple. In my opinion, for the safety factor alone, I wish the National Highway Safety Board would become involved."

"poor connection, have to unplug and replug phone in several times, also when bluetooth is engaged, it switches from one to the other, I have had other issues here too numerous to describe."

Charles H., GA (2017 Honda CR-V LX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, MA (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"My apple car play must be reset every time I stop the car from running. It will not turn on automatically. I must unplug and replug it in every time used. I took it to my Honda dealer and they could not fix. This must be a problem with all Honda CRVs because my wife also has a CRV and the same problem is seen."

Melissa R., TX (2017 Honda CR-V EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"CarPlay starts music when iPhone is plugged into USB. If it doesn't find music it will start a podcast. This even if those sources are stopped. CarPlay frequently won't engage and needs to be rebooted while underway, dangerous."

"From day 1, at random times upon starting the car and putting the car in reverse - the backup camera will lag. By several seconds and at times freeze. Usually when this happens there are no guide lines superimposed on the screen. It is wildly dangerous once you start depending so heavily on the backup camera. This happens once every few weeks and Honda doesn't update the head units like most other brands with electronic touchscreen computers in the dash. It's embarrassing that Honda is so behind on tech."

"Screen goes crazy - scrolling from screen to screen uncontrollably or freezes up. Only way I know to solve is to stop and turn off vehicle. Then restart car and all seems normal. This has occurred 5 times in 9 months. Also, if phone is connected - car play - and I say hey Siri the fan or A/C shuts off until Siri finishes then comes back on. Kind of spooky. Multiple system failure warnings displaying on center screen. 3. Lane departure warning comes on at times with multiple other warning lights coming on. Millimeter Wave radar unit with adaptive cruise control...replaced TWICE 4. Front passenger side sway bar link was loose causing clunking noises and was tightened down by technician. 5. "Repeatedly and irregularly, the display screen would just go haywire, flashing and rebooting or freezing up. This has not occurred recently so I believe there was a software update that may have fixed it, but the system still has periods, often, when it becomes unresponsive and requires repeated manipulation to get it to work...eventually. This is the worst operating system in the car and frankly, prior knowledge of how it 'doesn't work reliably' would have stopped me from this purchase."

"System flickered on and off. I visited Honda dealer, they said they needed to contact Honda of America to get authorization. Process took 8 months. During this time, display was frozen on highest level of brightness which made car dangerous to drive at night. I wrote letter, visited Honda dealer numerous times, and filed a complaint with NHTSB. I find it unacceptable that it took Honda this long to fix. This is the 5th Honda I have owned and unsure if I will buy another one due to this problem. "The infotainment screen occasionally goes berserk. It beeps, flashes, and goes blank (very dim), occasionally until you shut the car off and start it again. This impacts the function of the navigation, radio, USB connection, and Bluetooth. It has happened once while in navigation mode and in heavy interstate traffic while I was looking for an unfamiliar exit. This was a potential safety issue. The dealer did a reset of the system twice. The second time was after registering a complaint with Honda USA. It is improved now, but it has had a mild case once since the resets, so I do not fully trust it. I am retired, and with the pandemic, have not needed to drive much."

"THE DISPLAY SCREEN RAPIDLY CHANGES BRIGHTNESS REPEATEDLY AND BEEPS. EVENTUALLY GOES BLANK (FREEZES). THIS IS A PROBLEM WHEN USING NAVIGATION. MUST TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN ON TO UNFREEZE. BROUGHT IN TWICE. THE FIRST TIME THEY SAID NOTHING WRONG, AND WAS HUMAN ERROR. 2ND COMMON PROBLEM, AND HONDA AND THE SCREEN MAKER ARGUING RESPONSIBILITY. THEREFORE WILL NOT FIX UNTIL THE DISAGREEMENT IS RESOLVED."

"The infotainment interface is horrible on this vehicle. The screen freezes up and then starts randomly beeping and flashing. There is no fix by Honda for this problem right now. They have only recently admitted nationwide that there is a problem. It's really inexcusable for Honda to make such a bad product."

John K., WA (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Display scrreen flashed a dozen error messages, from warning messages to system failures. My wife was driving it and parked it to call me. It was obviously electrical in nature, but America Honda was ridiculous in their answer. Just tell her to drive it home. So, when should we trust that a brake system failure warning is truly a brake system failurre? (Sorrry about the sticking r key.....)"

Sherri H., VA (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen intermittently begins flashing, showing the brightness controls, and becomes impossible to interact with. Problem eventually clears up on its own, and always after the ignition has been turned off. We recently received a software update but too early to tell what if any effect it has had."

Had to reboot, by stopping the vehicle turning off the engine and restarting. Took into Honda service, but did not find a problem. As am a IT professional, am familiar with these issues. But also with the other problem with Blue tooth noted in this survey, where pairing is a problem, it may be systems, not product issues."

Display screen goes blank

"When the display goes blank all information is unavailable and can only be restored by shutting down the vehicle and restarting the engine. Hardly an option when you are on the highway or interstate. Honda tried to update/reset the system twice and has yet to have a permanent solution. The display screen is failing intermittently and unpredictably. As of this writing the screen has been working well since the last fix but I can not yet depend on it and Honda is not assuring me that it will not fail in the future.."

A few times these features have dropped out without the screen going blank. The system warns when this occurs. Stopping the car and rebooting always corrects the problem. This would be more serious if it occurred where stopping to reboot were not immediately possible. The dealer says the problem is due to external interference."

"Although the display screen has gone blank without any other symptoms, I am most irritated by the following situation. The infotainment system starts beeping, and continues to do so, indicating that a change in screen brightness has been requested. The system then changes the brightness - often to a black screen, and then continues this behavior with increasing frequency until the car is turned off thus rebooting the system."

"The head unit will become completely useless at times. Luckily I figured out that I can hold the power knob down and the andriod OS will reboot after 10 seconds - then takes 45-60 seconds to come back online. It has been a problem since day 1. My mother's 2019 CR-V and friends 2020 Civic do not have the same issues - but Honda does a piss poor job with updates (unlike Ford, for example) and there are no future firmware updates planned that would improve the functionality of their head units. In this day and age, it's embarrassing that they have such an archaic system. This happens at least once a week."

"My 2017 Honda CRV has been having problems with the Display Audio/Information screen. Sporadically it will flash with various displays with no control of the screen using any of the icon function switches. None of the controls work and the screen will go dim (night mode) and then bright again. The only solution is to stop, turn off the car and restart. The car has 45,000 miles on it and was purchased new in the Spring of 2017. I’ve experienced this for the last 3 or 4 months. Today I took it to the Honda dealer and had it repaired. Of course, it was out of warrantee and the cost was around $70 for the “software upgrade” – which I understand was accomplished via internet. My concern is with the concept that somehow, I managed to corrupt the Honda installed software and therefore should be liable for its restoration. This appears to be a built-in defect, designed, approved, and installed by Honda during the car’s manufacture. Why isn’t Honda liable to repair or replace an inherent defect? Software doesn’t go bad, get worn out, or require periodic servicing like mechanical parts. It is installed and doesn’t need attention unless the manufacturer alters subsequent versions that has an interface with the other auto systems or the original version, installed by the manufacturer is defective from the moment it rolled off the line. Mileage or length of ownership for an existing manufacturer installed defect should not be the responsibility of the owner. The owner has no control over whether the software works properly or not. The manufacturer does. I emailed CR about the problem."

It's been over two years and Honda still has no solution I keep contacting my Honda dealer but they just say Honda is aware of the problem and are working on it. "The brightness indicator keeps rotating between all the settings, from black to whatever, very quickly. When it does this, there is nothing else on the screen. It usually stops by itself after a while. When I can, I stop the car and restart the engine. This happens sometimes when I am using the GPS but has happened at other times as well. It seems to happen if I accidentally hit the brightness button when I am changing the volume on the radio."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda CR-V)

"The three problems with the screen are hard to discuss individually. But typically, the screen brightness selector would all of sudden appear on the screen without any prompting. At that point, the touch screen would freeze and none of the buttons would work. Then the screen would it would go dark. It happned rather randomly, but seemed to be happening more often until we took it in several months ago. At that point they gave us what they called a hard reinstall. Since then it hasn't happned as rarely, if it all. To fix it all you have to do is stop turn off the car and restart it. Not very handy, especially on the crowded highway when you are relying on the navagation system. At the begining of the problem, they told us that it had something to do with the Apple Bluetooth interface and the company is worrking on a fix. They started telling this to us many months ago and as recently as last month, the update was not available. Their suggestion was to use ApplePlay vs. bluetooth to connect with Apple devices. When we first encountered the probelm, they told us that they could not replicate it so they couldn't do anything about it. The next few times it happened we took videos. That got their attention. They kept it for a week, but did not resolve the issue. we asked for a new system they said no beacuse it was a software problem, and had nothing to do with the hjardware. Eventually they did the Hard-restart i disussed earlier. It ahs been much better. Also, we took it in before te warranty expired, so if when they find a fix, it will still be covered under the warranty. - That's what they told us anyway."

Eventually my local guy confessed that the system is based on apple os5. The current os at the time of sale was 7, just changing to 8. The car was born 3 generations behind. Also - there was a phantom power drain that would run the batter down and keep the car from starting. And finally . . . dealer confessed that most cr-v models had weak and/or defective batteries to begin with. IMO? With this system, Honda was trying to be more like a high line car in its feature offering but really couldn't deliver"

"Screen for the Navigation system goes berserk - it may freeze, go blank or show gibberish. We took video of the screen acting up (need to catch it in the act) Local Honda dealer ordered a new screen, but it took over 2 months to get here, by which time we were out of state. Dealer sent the screen back to Honda. We had to bring the vehicle back to the dealer to start the process all over again, and are currently waiting for dealer to order the screen again. IMO very poor performance by dealer and Honda."

"The SPS system misplaces my current position...often. it can be off by a mile. The most troublesome is that it warns me not to take the car pool lane but leads me to take the wrong exit when approaching another freeway.. until the last second when it is too late to make the correct turn. if i did not know the area, i would have caused a collision or taken the wrong road. this happens on a frequent basis."

"The A/C stopped cooling, and I suspected a loss of coolant. The dealer's service center found a huge hole in the compressor. The service representative told me that they had seen a lot of problems with CR-V compressors, and they were "no good." The car was 3 months past the 3-year warranty, and the service representative told me that Honda would not cover the part under any circumstances. The dealership had tried, and never had success. Furthermore, due to mistakes up the supply chain, a replacement compressor was currently unavailable, but would perhaps come in after six weeks or so. I was required to pay for the compressor and other parts in order for them to place an order for them. The parts may come by the end of summer. I knew Honda had a short warranty, but thought the CR-V was a better-made car than it seems to be. If I had to do it again, I'd probably buy a RAV-4 now that it has Apple Car Play."

Even when using the factory installed remote engine start for the maximum 20 minutes allowed, the vehicle is still cold when I step inside. After those 20 minutes and another 8 minutes of driving the engine temperature barely reaches half. When I stop at a red light the temperature gauge drops and the car no longer provides warm air. When I arrive at work after 10 minutes of driving the car still has not warmed up and the temperature gauge is about one quarter. The heater system cannot clear all the windows of frost even after I have scraped them. Only on drives greater than 20 minutes in length does the car produce sustained heat."

"The 1.5L turbo engine model does not provide adequate heat in my cold northern climate."

Anonymous, VT (2017 Honda CR-V EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Engine takes forever to heat up enough to blow warm air. then once engine temperature indicator reaches normal, the air will blow warm. HOWEVER, when you slow down, brake for a stop light, etc., the engine temperature plummets (doesn't even show - it drops completely off the grid so it looks like the car isn't running) and the heated air becomes cold. I have driven 20+ miles, after the car had warmed up, with the cold air blowing. This happens in the winter and I can tell you that this isn't fun in MN winters. I have seen several articles on the internet about this... https://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/CR-V/2017/AC _heater/heat_not_working_properly.shtml The situation is bad enough that I would not purchase this car again - or take it for free - with this issue. Winter lasts a LONG time in MN. The other issue I have had it is you turn the front defroster on, ALL the side windows get foggy. If you turn the front air vents on and point to the windows, the front window gets foggy. The dealership is aware of the issue, stated no fix is coming, and said it was a result of the type of energy efficient engine."

In April the dealer updated the A/C Control Unit Software, saying it did not need to be replaced. I think it solved the problem."

Quan A., NY (2017 Honda CR-V EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"At low Canadian winter temperatures the engine does not warm up in city driving. In fact, at stoplights the temperature gauge will drop off the bottom stop. Car had recall intended to ameliorate this problem with no success. The dealer refuses to accept that it is a problem (“This is normal.” Though no other of my vehicles has shown this.) in fact, at last investigation of the issue the dealer charged me a fee for analysis rather than making it a warranty issue. Honda needs to, but is unwilling to, step up to the mark. It tarnishes the maker’s reputation in my eyes. Also, from the net I understand there is a secret warranty extension for engine failure due to the associated oil dilution with fuel. I have heard nothing official and the dealer has not acknowledged it, I have changed dealers for service due to my loss of confidence in a dealer with a formerly excellent reputation."

"A/C quit working approximately 18 months after purchase of vehicle. Dealer found refrigerant was low and did not find an obvious leak, so recharged the system with a dye that is supposed to make a leak easier to detect. No charge for this service. Dealer asked that I run the A/C as much as possible so they could reexamine for traces of the leak, which they hoped to do before weather washes off the dye. However, the weather turned unusually cold here in the fall, and was warm enough to run the A/C only a few times before winter set in. Now that spring is coming, there still have been few warm days, and I suspect any residual dye would have been washed away by now. The A/C seems to be working normally, based on just a few warm days' trials. I'm still monitoring the performance when the weather permits."

Don C., OH (2017 Honda CR-V EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Between 12-18 months of ownership, the A/C started to make a whining-type noise, and ultimately stopped producing any cold air at all. "Several times, the adaptive cruise control has disabled itself while driving. When this happens, related functions such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, collision warning, etc. are also disabled, and the yellow (not red) brake system trouble light comes on. Once, the system reset itself when I applied the brakes. The remaining times, the system reset only after stopping and restarting the engine. Honda technicians were unable to replicate the problem, probably because it happens rarely, and so it has not been fixed."

The dash warning light has come on when this happens. I can't be sure, but it seems each time it happened we were driving across a strongly contrasting shadow on a sunny day. Engine computer

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

Anonymous, ON (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"The 1.5 Turbo does not get to operating temperature quickly. Therefore, if driving for shorter distances, gasoline in the oil system does not evaporate and gasoline accumulates in the oil pan. Eventually the car will stall and will need immediate repair. The only repair is to change the oil. Honda is aware of the problem but has offered no fix. Meanwhile, 2018's - with the same engine and problem - are going out the door. This problem has been significant in several northern cities - Duluth and Bemedji MN, Wausau WI, and apparently in northern China."

Kurt W., MN (2017 Honda CR-V EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Hard to believe, but oil level increased (> 2 quarts!) due to fuel getting into oil system which caused engine to stop. Dealer had to put in new engine, but problem still occurs of oil level rising due to fuel getting down cylinder walls when taking short trips or via high pressure fuel pump attached to head that operates by cam. Honda 2017 and 2018 CR-Vs and other 1.5L turbo engines are experiencing this problem per user forums. Honda does not have a solution but to check if oil level is rising every fill-up and have dealer change oil. Terrible. China stopped sales of vehicle, last we heard."

Turbo or supercharger

"This is a coy of an email I sent to my dealer. Please see attached notice from Consumer Reports re Honda CR-V 2017 & 2018 turbo engine leaking gasoline into the oil. As you can see in the article Honda knows about this and has commenced a repair campaign. Found this out over the weekend and checked my oil on Sat AM without driving Fri PM and the oil level was well over the max on dip stick and it had a slight odor of gas. I checked it again Sun AM after driving Sat PM and the oil level was over an inch above the max level with a strong odor of gas. I am concerned about driving it because there is undoubtedly a chance of a fire not something I want to experience while on the road. I have an appointment for service tomorrow Monday at 10:30. I recently had it in for recall service and they found no issues otherwise in the regular inspection. After they serviced the car without changing the oil by my request, they said no problem with the oil. I took my car to a friend who helped change to oil so that we could measure the amount or oil came out. The amount was over 5 quarts and the amount that is called out as full in the Honda manual is 4 quarts so there was at least 1 quart of gasoline in the oil. There is now a class action law suit against Honda for this issue. I did contact CR customer service by email some time after this and asked if CR had any new information about this problem but I never heard back from them. PLEASE NOTE, I no longer have the 2015. I tried to go back and correct my reply but was not allowed to do so."
