This version of the Elantra was a well-rounded competitor with rankings near the top of our small-sedan Ratings. An easy car with which to live, the Hyundai combines nimble handling with comfort and a well-controlled ride. The car also offers a neatly laid out and well-equipped interior. However, the coupe-like stylling dictates a beltline that swoops upward toward the rear. This can impede the view to the rear quarters.

Owner Reports

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. The 148-hp, four-cylinder engine delivers solid performance and very good fuel economy. The cabin is well finished and the rear seat is relatively roomy, though road noise is rather pronounced. While the Elantra coupe is simply a two-door version of the high-scoring sedan, Elantra GT hatchback is noticeably different and scores significantly lower in our ratings.

Headlights

"The headlight assembly is cheaply made. One front headlight kept going out. Found out it was the headlight assembly and not the bulb. Dealer never caught the issue and the extended warranty expired. The issue was never really addressed. $232 for headlight assembly. There was an issue with the transmission this was taken care of within days of the end of the extended warranty. I had several recalls for this vehicle. The major recall a letter was never sent to us; I had found it on the internet. The fact that it does not give 40mpg is highway is very disappointing. What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"This car has had a problem since about 60,000 miles which was taken in 3 times within the 100,000 warranty, but never fixed. The transmission stays in the gear just under the top gear and won't upshift sometimes. We need to accelerate and decelerat"

Anonymous, WI (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, OH (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Frances J., CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring)

"Transmission replaced under warranty when it was 2 years old. The shifting problem restarted approximately one year later after it was out of warranty. No warning lights have come on but it still shifts roughly from 2nd to 3rd gear"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"It occurs occasionally and has gone away each time. Dealer could not identify. I think it is a computer problem. Shifting through gears is jerky and uncertain when it occurs - somewhat unnerving, until it gets back to normal mode"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Periodically car lurches as gears shift. Seems to be more frequent in lower temps"

John B., NC (2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"Slipping transmission similar to previous comment, it slips in and out of gears, but then the problem disappears"

Anonymous, NV (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"When shifting into a higher gear the transmission would slip as indicated by a jump in RPM's"

Joseph B., VA (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"trans slips from 2-3 dealer states it is normal"

Anonymous, GA (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Not sure if its slipping or just cant figure out which gear it should be in. The car herks and jerks which is really annoying to drive Lousy mileage way less than sticker of 28-30 avg miles Best we ever got was 25"

Frances J., CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring)

"The automatic transmission would slip, especially when climbing up and down mountain hills. However, the Hyundai Dealorship/Garage said that their computer diagnostics could not find the problem, so they did nothing to fix it. (They did not test driv"

"Car made a 'clunking" sound as it was switching gears. It was a problem with a computer part which was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring)

"The transmission was very slow going into reverse, up to 3-4 seconds delay, which I felt was potentially dangerous. The dealership made adjustments to correct the problem which did not help. Eventually the transmission was replaced"

Rick F., ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Whenever the car was placed in to a gear, P, R, D, or M, it would jump the whole car and jerk the passengers. This also happened when the car was in drive and the transmission would shift gear, which would cause the car to lose control a little"

Tyron T., UT (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"the trans has started to slip on occasion and once the trans light went one . it happened just as I was leaving town the next day so I could not bring it in to get checked"

"Difficulty shifting into reverse"

Chris B., ME (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"They replaced what they called a transmission wiring harness that caused a service engine warning light to come on. This was covered under the Hyundai powertrain warranty."

Larry W., WA (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Temperature sensor failed. Second failure of this item. Both times replaced under warranty."

Lonnie P., AL (2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Took the car to the dealer because of rough shifting when it was still in warranty. Said they reset the shifting points and returned the car to me. Still rough shifting when I drove it off the lot. Got worse and took it back some time later because it was experiencing severely rough shifting. By this time the car was out of warranty. Picked the car up and given a 600.00 dollar bill for the repair (transmission sensor). I advised them that the car was in for the problem months before and asked for warranty consideration. They advised that Hyundai would not offer any warranty consideration."

Roy M., SC (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Transmission shifting was sometimes not as expected and the ECP light would come on. Transmission sensor for RPM replaced (no cost) and problem disappeared"

Anonymous, AL (2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Car would hesitate/miss while accelerating. particularly before it warmed up Took 2 trips to Hyundai to determine issue and fix it. determined to be the trans temp. sensor. Fixed it and no problems since"

Dewayne C., IL (2011 Hyundai Elantra Limited)

"faulty temperature sensor that made it shift roughly"

Greg K., MN (2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS)

That and the tire issues were the two main issues. I would not buy this car with the low profile tires. They look good but are prone to blowouts if you hit a pothole. I had six blowouts while driving this car. It did not come with a spare. On one occasion I had both driver side tires blow out while driving about 25mph and hit a pot hole.
