The Cherokee finally gives Jeep a small SUV for those who want the brand's trail cred but don't want to pay Grand Cherokee prices. And while it does offer a lot of workhorse capability for this class, it fails to get a lot of the day-to-day basics right. The list of flaws is long. Performance and fuel economy from the four-cylinder engine is pathetic.

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Hesitates at start up"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"Delayed engagement of Forward and Reverse gears that the dealership thinks is normal; they keep indicating No Trouble Found."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"When you back up and put it in drive most every time."

Anonymous, (2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"car doesn't shift when temp is below 20"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"The CVT on this vehicle is AWFUL! From a stop, it takes much too long for the transmission to engage under acceleration, and while cruising if you need to find passing power the transmission dies then revs very high, sometimes creating a "slamming" effect causing the whole vehicle to buck violently. Worst tranny I've ever driven. Thank goodness it's a company car"

Eric M., GA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"Slipping transmission"

Zillah J., CA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

Steve P., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"continued issue with transmission slipping"

Zillah J., CA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"At 10 to 13 mph from a stop the transmission will not shift into the next gear it just puts the truck in neutral. No matter what I try it just rolls until it pops back into gear about 1 1/2 to 2 mins later. At a red light I have almost been hit from behind 2x's. Dealer will not fix bc it does not do all the time and doesn't do it they have it. although they have had similar problems with other Jeeps. When it does finally shift into gear it makes a loud bang and it kicks into gear not shift into gear."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"each time I stopped at a light and then stepped on the gas the car dragged"

Harvey M., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission computer

"Experienced rough shifts and service transmission light. It was fixed via a software update."

Steven S., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"Jeep's Elusive 9th Gear. I'm far from alone on this. 9th gear never gets engaged unless I test drive it over 85 mph, which is, of course, not legal anywhere on a public road. No fix available from Jeep."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"Vehicle shifts improperly and a thumping sounds comes from acceleration and down shifting. Dealer stated that Chrysler/ Jeep is aware of the problem and is working on a fix."

Anthony C., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"The Transmission went into limp home mode. The dealer reprogrammed it the next day so I was back on the road in one day"

Anonymous, BC (2016 Jeep Cherokee Unsure 3.2-L V6)

"Problem was when new transmission would go out of gear when travelling, when corrected no further problem"

Anonymous, (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"Bad enough that the dash had to be removed and part of the Jeep re-welded."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"water entering front passenger footwell"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"After a good rain my wife discovered water in the rear passenger floor board. She took it to the dealership and they just said it must have been a seal leak, but could not locate where the water came from."

Dan C., AR (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"The car makes a lot of noises from underneath. In the summer the car makes a clinking noise after it is shut off."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"Driver's side rear seat rattled when driving. Had it looked at 2-3 times before I requested that the entire seat be replaced, which was done."

Steven H., UT (2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 3.2-L V6)

"There is a frustrating rattle somewhere in the top of the car that started after we went over an unpaved road. It's frustrating as it's louder at times and almost quiet (especially when we're near the dealership)."

Peter F., CA (2016 Jeep Cherokee 3.2-L V6)

"The squeak started last year. It is located in the rear seat. Sometimes I can get it to stop by sliding the seat forward and then forcefully returning it to its locked position."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"There was an intermitent low rattling no one could find. Eventually it was traced to the mechanism for the retractable glass roof and fixed after i owned it for a year and went back to Jeep multiple times. You could not hear it all the time. They even kept the care and had people drive it around until someone eventually heard it and they could isolate where it was coming from."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited Unsure)

Anonymous, PA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"I recently relocated from Seattle to Atlanta so I need to rely on my navigation system extensively since I don't know the Atlanta area at all. Due to directions given by the navigation system I have gotten lost and/or sent many miles (10 + ) out of my way. I now use my phone to compare routes, I would say 99% of the time my phone will provide a shorter more direct route the car navigation wants to send me miles further and then turn back to where I need to go. One example, I needed to go 1 mile up to the next exit to reach my destination. My navigation system wanted me to go 6 miles further down the Interstate make a U-turn and them took me back to my actual destination. I have pictures of the car navigation showing I should turn right and my phone said turn left...my destination was to the left. I am seriously considering selling this car just because I'm so frustrated by constantly getting lost by the incorrect directions I'm getting. I've changed settings multiple times but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I talked to the dealership and they look at me like I have 3 heads. So even though I will probably take a loss on what I owe, I'll take it just to unload this piece of crap!"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"Gps periodically gets lost and does not know where it is at or what direction it is headed. Eventually recovers and performs normally after several minutes."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"The symbol indicating the location of the vehicle on the map was way off. At one point, it showed me in the middle of the ocean"

Charles A., NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Recently I did a UConnect update. Ever since when my phone is paired with the car, I do not get audio commands from my phone navigation (Google Maps). If I unpair my phone I get audio commands. Since the cars navigation system keeps getting me lost I rely on my phone to get me where I need to go. It is very inconvenient to unpair my phone because then I can't take calls."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)
Radio

"An update appeared on my screen, the dealer allegedly fixed it, the update kept re-appearing. I took my Jeep to another dealership who found that the radio had failed and had to be replaced. This all happened within two weeks of my warranty expiring. Dealership #1 didn't want to fix it, Dealership #2 replaced the radio at their expense even though the warranty had expired. They saw from my paperwork that I had tried to get dealership #1 to fix it while the warranty was still in effect."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland 3.2-L V6)

"Poor reception on the Satellite radio. Frequent dropouts"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland 3.2-L V6)

Anonymous, WI (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"Too dim, dangerous to drive on dark roads or when it rains"

Anonymous, QC (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

H F., AB (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"headlights very poor replaced with LEDs they didn't work so replaced with better quality lamps & they are better but still not great"

Anonymous, AB (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"LED lamp failed. OEM part was $350, plus 1-1/2hr shop time. Aftermarket $200 and shop time can be saved if removing the inner panel, rather than the outer bumper panel, (as per OEM instructions.)"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

Anonymous, WI (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"That was the same problem as the transmission mentioned earlier. Your questionnaire made it confusing to choose where to note the issue."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)
Differential

"It exploded. Had to be totally replaced. Was under warranty."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)

"The rear differential had a torque converter that was leaking transmission fluid due to a defective seal. The vehicle had to be flat towed to the dealership for repairs. The dealer installed a whole new differential under warranty in a one day turn around"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Jeep Cherokee Overland 3.2-L V6)
Driveline vibration

"this was discovered during the annual service visit. the dealer recommended the repair and it was covered under warranty."

Allen C., TX (2016 Jeep Cherokee 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Driveshaft or axle

"One week after purchase, the axle completely broke without any cause. This was replaced with the warranty but many other problems with the car were paid out of pocket. This car has been in the shop more than it has been out."

Jean G., IL (2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited 3.2-L V6)
Electrical failure

"the system stopped cooling and, after numerous attempts at figuring it out by the service center, it turned out to be spliced cable that needed replacement."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)

"A new bezel kit for the shifter had to be installed because of a Service Shifter message appearing on the dashboard. Also the water pump had to be replaced because it was leaking coolant. I didn't see a box to check for that. ."

Radiator

"Horrible anti freeze odor entering into vehicle while driving or at a stop"

Salvatore A., IL (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Complained numerous times that I could smell coolant and asked for them to check radiator and hoses or whatever may have been causing the smell. Each time I came in they would tell me that they couldn't find anything, until one night while driving home the car going 55 mph just turned itself off and it was hard to get the car to the side of the road. The car smelt like it was burning sugar too. Tried to start car numerous times on the side of the car and finally after 3-4 times it started. Immediately the next day called and told them what happened and they said to bring it in and thats when they said they NOW could tell there was a leak in the radiator and the hoses and that the A/C wasn't working properly and also that they needed to check for a system update for why the car had stalled, so they said they would need to keep the car and gave me a free loaner car. They kept the car for 5 days and to this day you can still smell burnt coolant and of course the warranty is over. They replaced the radiator which had a crack in it they told me as well as replacing the the coolant and hoses connections and checked A/C system and recharged the A/C. Horribly discouraged by a dishonest automotive industry so please tell people to be aware, my car cost $35,000, think of the people who buy $50,000 to $80,000 + for their cars or trucks!"

Louise D., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The radiator began leaking. Started in the summer and was noticeable because of coolant smell. Problem was resolved in February 2020 by the dealership and was completely covered under warranty"

Anonymous, BC (2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 3.2-L V6)
Thermostat

"Warning light came on & remote start wouldn’t work. Dealership replaced thermostat. It was covered by warranty."

Judy T., OH (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The check engine light comes on periodically, and the computer always comes back to the thermostat. I haven't replaced the thermostat, because when I top up the oil and coolant, the check engine light goes off. It seems to be blowing oil through the engine as well. Our mechanic can't seem to pinpoint the problem."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)
Calipers

"On the front brakes only half of the calipers were working so one of the pads looked brand new while the other was worn down to the metal. This resulted in the rotors needing replacement."

Bruce S., ME (2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 3.2-L V6)
Parking brake

"EPB system would not release; vehicle could not be moved. Had to have EPB switch replaced and EPB system checked. Problem related to an electrical / control problem that cropped up again later (not an EPB issue but an ECM / BCM module issue to which the EPB / ABS controls have to "talk")"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee Latitude 3.2-L V6)
Squeaking

"Brakes. I bought the car when it came off lease. It had 33,000 miles on it when I bought it. They told me the brakes were new. About a month after I bought the car I noticed an occasional grinding sound from the brakes. I brought the car back to Jeep dealership. They looked. Said the brakes were new and they could find no ptoblem. It happened again I brought the car to my own mechanic. He told me the same thing. Brakes wre new and good. While it doesn't happen as often anymore, it still happens. One of my neighbors has a Jeep and tells me it happens to him as well only very sporadically. It's annoying but it now happens so infrequently I just live with it."

A loss of drive can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning. A loss of the Park function can cause unintended vehicle rollaway which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Summary:
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed Power Transfer Unit (PTU). Relative movement in the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the PTU. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the Park function while stationary.
What should you do:
FCA US LLC will notify owners, and dealers will perform a software update that will maintain vehicle propulsion by engaging rear wheel drive and prevent rolling in Park by activating the electronic parking brake if a failed input spline occurs. This recall began July 14, 2020. Owners may contact FCA USA LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is W47.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
