Jeep has refreshed the Cherokee, giving it a face-lift, additional creature comforts, and a new turbocharged engine option. But despite those improvements, it’s still a mediocre model -- with little to like -- in a popular and competitive segment. It still suffers from an uncooperative transmission, a stiff ride, and mundane handling.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Extra power of six cylinder engine improves driveability. Gas mileage is still good."

James R., NY (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Handling is sharp and acceleration is superb."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Acceleration"

Dale W., IN (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"The 4 cylinder, direct injection, 2.0 liter turbo engine performs flawlessly. It has outstanding acceleration yet gets an average of 26 mpg. Given the weight of the Jeep Cherokee Trail Hawk, that is an excellent balance of fuel economy and acceleration."

Anonymous, NH (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Quick acceleration, especially when merging with traffic. Excellent turning radius, Smooth handling. Quiet ride."

Anonymous, PA (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Acceleration is outstanding. The trailer-tow package kicks the final drive ratio up a notch, (makes merging into traffic more fun). Handling is very satisfactory, quite confident."

Carroll P., MI (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"I have the new 2.0L turbo engine in my Cherokee. I am very satisfied with the power. I have towed a trailer with it several times and it was great. I am pretty satisfied with the all around fuel economy as well."

Paul S., MI (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"The new engine is outstanding it will amaze you the acceleration on the new 4 for 2019 will develop almost 300 hp gets out of the hole quickly"

Andrew C., MI (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"WITH TURBO ENGINE: Superb overall engine performance for this SUV; Can average 30-32+ mpg on highway driving; 28-30 mpg around town if not driven too aggressively or left idling when parked. Spirited acceleration from start; actually FAST; excellent, acceleration, transmission performance, passing, and hill climbing power. Actually SUPERB; using SPORT transmission mode ENHANCES all of the above. Can use regular, plus, or (for maximum performance, premium (recommended BUT NOT required) fuel. A sleeper of an engine for this vehicle. Handling also like my 2015 but 2019 feels even a bit flatter on turns; compliant over most bumps; comfortable seats. Will be my preferred vehicle to drive on long trips! C R should be TESTING THIS MODEL ASAP!"

Robinson L., CT (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The new Cherokee is very quiet inside and the ride is very comfortable. I feel it is nicely balanced between comfort and on road handling. The seats are very comfortable. I have the premium interior."

Paul S., MI (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Cherokee is shared by a tall driver and a not so tall driver. Memory seats make transition easy."

James R., NY (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Noisy knock on rainy days"

Anonymous, NC (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Leather seats are extremely comfortable. Heated/vented seats are a nice feature, as is heated steering wheel. For a 4WD vehicle, the ride is very smooth and comfortable and not noisey."

Theodore L., GA (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"The seats are very comfortable and the ride is smooth"

Anonymous, NY (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"The comfort is excellent. The ride and noise show a marked improvement over my past 2016 Jeep Limited. I do not agree with CR's assessment of the Jeep Cherokee."

Charles A., WI (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"12 way power driver AND passenger seat"

J B., IN (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"I believe the new Cherokee looks as good and is as comfortable as some of the more expensive Luxury Compact SUV's. I'm very happy with it. I think they should have used more sound deadening with the 2.0L turbo engine. It's a quite a bit louder than the V6 I was used to in the 2017 Pacifica."

Barry L., OH (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Ride and comfort are outstanding"

Dale W., IN (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Very quiet cabin no wind noise"

Andrew C., MI (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"I have the Trailhawk elite and have all the bells and whistles I had on my Overland Summit for less money. I did give up some fancy interior trim but my two German Shepherds ride in the car at times and the ultra fancy trim is not necessary"

Anonymous, VT (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Very low ride noise and best seats I have ever had in a car."

Anonymous, MN (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Very comfortable, good size seat & back. Power, driver & passenger, lumbar control, heated & vented. Firmness is very good."

Carroll P., MI (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"the lease deal through Jeep was a fantastic price for the vehicle and allthe options"

Anonymous, PA (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"We are into the leasing of our automobiles. We get a new automobile every 2 or 21/2 years. This is my second Jeep and have not have had one negative thing occur up to this point. If I was to buy this vehicle I would have the same comments."

Charles A., WI (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Incredibly capable on all surfaces in any weather, for the fraction of the price of a Grand Cherokee or import SUV. Well-built and efficient, it doesn't seem like a cheaper version of the bigger Jeep, just a smaller version, which is quite a good trick."

Allen A., MN (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Jeeps are reliable diving in snow and ice in Vermont."

Anonymous, VT (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"OPTIONED CAREFULLY, VALUE FOR MY MONEY WAS GREAT. TURBO ENGINE is expensive cost from base (model) price, but WELL WORTH HAVING as the engine of choice for this vehicle. A sensational engine to say the least, giving it a very sporting nature when driven in a spirited fashion. Also average mpg of 30+ is easily attainable. FUN FACTOR VALUE: excellent with this engine. CAPABILITY VALUE of vehicle: SUPERB in inclement weather conditions."

Robinson L., CT (2019 Jeep Cherokee)

"Forward and backward collision mitigation with braking"

J B., IN (2019 Jeep Cherokee)
