Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Kia Sorento owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"Sometimes fails to connect for Waze; phone connection sometimes fails."

Howell G., MA (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)
Backup or other camera/sensors

"Advance Cruise Control can be dangerous as it can kick in due do a dip in the road, or go into a full stop position when not necessary. It lacks A.I. level interpretation of events"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"While using cruise control. entire display would flash and cruise control and front distance detector would deactivate when on a freeway with many cars/trucks in front and on the sides"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)
CD player

"The CD player randomly stops playing a CD. Repeated times over various CD's. Hard to get the CD to eject then. Have to shut the car off. Will take it in at next service to get fixed."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"display screen freezes and won't clear up right away"

Joe H., QC (2017 Kia Sorento 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"Display screen (head unit) does not activate on startup - sometimes. Stays blank and none of the features associated are available - cameras, AV system, Bluetooth phone, etc. After a few minutes, sometimes a mile, system activates and all is OK. On request for evidence, provided dealer with videos of system in that state showing odometer, tachometer, and blank screen. That was 3-1-17 and it is now 5-13-17. Dealer says they are seeking a solution. Have not had follow-up contact initiated by Deale"

Howard H., WA (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"Display Screen periodically went blank on start up. Took videos of screen, tachometer, and other dash. Gave those to dealer. Dealer ordered replacement and dropped it in. No problem, no hassle. Works consistently. No follow-on problems."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"This is the same "intermittent" connection issue that I described regarding Phone connectivity. It is only an occassional problem and occurs when I am plugged in via USB (which is what I do during long trips). I've asked the Dealer and they have no idea what I'm talking about - so the source and solution of the problem are TBD"

Chuck G., VA (2017 Kia Sorento LX 3.3-L V6)

"Please see my previous comments."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"System will not maintain the traffic information provided by XM. I let the XM Radio subscription expire and then bought the Traffic subscription, but it won't work as it should. I have to activate the Traffic by calling XM when I try to use it"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"Would not pull up a valid address"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Constant dropping and reconnecting of phone connection"

Anonymous, TN (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)

"Bluetooth pairing and connections work fine. It is when I'm plugged in via the USB and using Apple Car Play that I experience intermittent problems. Occassionally the USB connection with the phone witll drop - which is particularly annoying when I'm in the middle of a phonecall. I don't know the exact problem, but it sometimes seems to be related to confusion between trying to connect to my phone via USB and then switching to Bluetooth after I'm already connected. TBD. I asked the Dealer an"

Chuck G., VA (2017 Kia Sorento LX 3.3-L V6)

"During cold weather (below 25 degrees) I had to constantly reconnect the Bluetooth and reset the clock time."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)
Radio

"The Sirius radio signal became intermittent. The antenna was replaced to solve the problem."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Kia Sorento EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"once in a while the screen does not accept touch commands. if you turn the car off and then on again, that resolves the issue"

Lawrence N., NC (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)

"The radio doesn't come on with the power button. You have to touch the radio button each time."

Richard F., CA (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"Sometimes (1-3 times/month), sound does not activate when I start the car. It is a very minor issue."

Seldon B., AZ (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"Sirius radio signal intermittently drops to weak or no signal. Dealership replaced radio, but problem remains. Have not been back to give them a chance to look at this again."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Kia Sorento EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Entertainment system including the display screen died, had to be replaced under warranty"

Robert M., RI (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)
Voice control commands

"Not good at recognizing phone commands related to telephone dialing."

Howell G., MA (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)

"1. Voice Recognition completely does not work to pull up the correct telephone contact. 99% of the time it presents the wrong choices. I just do not use it anymore out of frustration. 2. Google Maps will only play thru car speaker when iPhone7+ is connected via USB cable to USB port of car and I select MEDIA from the dash console. When bluetooth connected alone I cannot hear Google Maps directions thru my car speaker. The cellphone talks but too low to hear while driving. 3. My previous 2014 ML350 had EXCELLENT voice recognition and bluetooth integration. And the center console wheel/knob was perfectly positioned to use and drive. By comparison oo access various things while driving I have to touch the Sorrento's screen. The screen is not convenient to reach (arm & hand bounces while driving), is either not responsive enough, or it is too responsive, making it difficult to drive and find a phone contact at the same time to the point of actually being dangerous. 4. Google Maps will NOT display on the car's screen. Only Apple Maps, which is inferior by comparison, will display on the car's screen. This is just poor integration with the phone. Whatever is displayed on the phone should be able to be displayed on the car's screen, except for movies and other things that one should not be watching while driving. 5. Overall the car's electronics with regard to Navigation, bluetooth integration and voice recognition are either just too clumsy to use and difficult to understand or they just do not work at all."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

"On the first day after receiving the car, all the electronics shutdown on the vehicle. No displays, no cameras, no entertainment. We were able to drive the vehicle to the dealership very carefully. They had to replace the module."

Stephen B., SC (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)
Cruise control

"The automatic cruise control in my car failed 8 times. It would automatically shit off randomly. I would have to pull over, turn the car off and on to get it to work. I took it to the dealer every time. They tried multiple fixes, but they never worked. They flew techs from California and had Korean engineers working on it. I got a new vehicle under the MD lemon law"

Anonymous, MD (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"tow hitch module malfunction resulting in continuous illumination of the trailer's brake and turn signal lights"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)

"Driver side eye lase light dimmer then other side"

Anonymous, RI (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"Puddle lights on driver's side stopped working. They were repaired under warranty and have not been a problem since."

Richard C., TX (2017 Kia Sorento SX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Headlights

"At night suddenly all lights went dark and came back on after app. 5 seconds."

Klaus G., BC (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"Headlights go out randomly when needed most, at night and remain off until turn them off and back on again. Particulaly dangerous at freeway speeds in unlit areas!"

Dennis G., ME (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"Headlights are not properly aimed. Night time driving requires use of high beams in order to see safe distance ahead."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"Headlights were turned off for a few seconds when it was in auto headlights mode, I called manufacturer and they said there is no recall for this problem so they advised me to take the car to dealer. I doubt I can show the problems so I did not take the car to dealer."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"Headlights way out of adjustment. took 3 trips to dealer to get them correctly adjusted. They appear to be again somewhat out of adjustment. Dealer worked well with us to correct the adjustment issue the first time. Just noticed that the lights seem to somewhat out of adjustment a few days ago. Have not had a chance to get vehicle back to dealer"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"Auto leveling headlights have VERY short range, like 25 feet. Also, they don't seem to automatically level. They seem to be aimed downward, and left/right side cutoff are not even. The auto bending feature has very limited effect when turning. The Halogen headlights on my 2004 Subaru Forester are much more effective"

Joseph R., PA (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)
Heated or cooled seats

"Low/slow level of heat and cooling compared to previous car"

J J., MN (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"1 Defective horn. Dealer replaced"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"No warning and no action to prevent hitting something or someone. System doesn't work despite much testing to determine whether it works or not. Dealer and especially KIA tech support have not been helpful in working problem."

Dennis G., ME (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"I had to wait almost a month for the camera/sensor part to come in to the dealer."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"autonomous emergency braking system failed do to camera /sensor."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"Passenger side airbag warning light will not go off with Passenger is sitting on a blanket had Kia rep check out the vehicle .he says it’s within its limitations if you take the blanket off it will work ,told me to have my wife To sit in the backseat !What happens to handicap people that need a cushion to sit on big safety violation"

John C., FL (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"Was a manufacturing assembly error. Part of the sensor wiring harness runs through the headliner. A single small wire was caught between two pieces of metal and crushed - not broken. Caused Adaptive Cruise Control to not perform consistently. Forward Early Warning and Rear Cross Traffic also did not operate. Dealer and Factory diagnosed and fixed in very acceptable and satisfactory manner, especially updates and communication. They both should be commended for manner in which they handled and solved it."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"only works about half the time some times it speeds up instead of slowing down."

J G., IL (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"the emergency braking and collision warning have been inoperative since I bought the vehicle and Kia will not fix it. They say it passes their electrical test but it does not work"

J G., IL (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"The front camera was loose"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"Consistent failure of BSD. Kia keeps resetting/recalibrating. But issue returns after a few days. 4 Trips to dealer."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Kia Sorento EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"emergency warning and braking give too little warning. emergency braking has never kicked in during some potential collision occurrences. Dealer said system is working as designed , Kia has changed the wording of ots brochures to indicate emergency braking may only reduce the impact of a collision--not prevent collision by emergengy braking to stop vehicle"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)

"Right side not always detecting car. Dealer recalibrated system. Okay after that."

John A., GA (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

John R., ON (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"The controller had to be replaced as warning light came on"

Anonymous, BC (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)
Calipers

"rear caliper seized"

Gord H., ON (2017 Kia Sorento LX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Parking brake

"Electronically activated parking brake failed to release on two separate occasions within a three week period requiring tow service and rental/loaner vehicle both times. Dealer erroneously released vehicle on first visit but on second visit replaced EPB module assembly & reset E-brake shoes. Repairs; $823.45 parts/$308.00 labor PLUS a total of $280.00 in rental/loaner vehicle fees. FORTUNATELY, the first and only extended warranty I've purchased in 36 years of NEW car ownership covered EVERYTHING (sans aggravation & inconvenience)! Also experienced repeated failures of Auto Hill Hold during 1st year of ownership. Console mounted switch replaced after THIRD visit to dealership. WHY Auto Hill Hold on an automatic transmission? And what genius @KIA placed the control switch directly in front of the cup holders!?!"

David L., PA (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)

"Wife just noticed that parking brake doesn't hold vehicle in place. Haven't contacted dealer on issue. Will be taking vehicle in to have brakes adjusted"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"parking brake would not hold on hill."

John A., GA (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)

"Electric parking brake would stick on and render the car undrivable. The dealer had it for a week and was unable to duplicate the problem. it recurred twice more before being repaired/replaced."

David V., CA (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)
Premature brake wear

"with my previous Audi A4 2013, the breakes had to be chaged at around 115000 km. With the sorento, I had to invest 1100$ on my brakes at 75000km. Warranty doesn't cover brakes."

Jean-Francois L., QC (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)
Rotors

"Rotors were slightly warped leading gradually to chatter when braking, especially under wet conditions."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Kia Sorento 3.3-L V6)

"These problems were the subject of a recent factory recall, due to potential corrosion due to moisture."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Kia Sorento LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"intermittent failure of air conditioning control buttons"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)

"Operator manual states that one can manually control all aspects of the system if it is not in Auto mode. So far, not the case. Unable to invoke air recirculate mode (i.e., outside air vent closed) on demand. I could take along drive on a hot humid day (or a freezing cold day) and something i the system will refuse to let me shut out outside air, reportedly if it senses that windows could fog up ( according to dealership). Also, unable to simply turn on the fan to bring in outside air on a pleasant day - manually turning on the fan automatically invokes either the heater or the A/C, depending on (??) - inside temperature? outside temperature? Will not simply blow in outside air."

Ian J., RI (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)

"The thermostat and gear both failed resulting in lack of control for heating / cooling."

Paul H., ON (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"When you push defrost you would expect it to blow on the wind the windshield. This could not be changed from the windshield to anything else. The dealer has had to order parts to get it fixed properly."

Brian W., GA (2017 Kia Sorento LX 3.3-L V6)
Heated or cooled seat controls

"heat and cooling slow and low"

J J., MN (2017 Kia Sorento SX 3.3-L V6)
Refrigerant leaks

"We discovered the AC was not working the day we bought the car. The dealer found it was low on Freon. They claimed there was no leak but we find it hard to believe that the car came from the factory with insufficient freon"

Jacqueline M., GA (2017 Kia Sorento LX 3.3-L V6)

"No ac because of leak. It has been repaired under warranty."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"For three services running, the dealer found the wheels out of alignment. The first two times I had them correct the alignment. The last time I told the dealer that three times in a row was unacceptable performance and asked the service rep to explain. He replied Pennsylvania roads. Although the roads in PA are not maintained at a level that approaches the taxes we pay, I found this to be an unacceptable answer and told him so. He replied that it was not much out of alignment and that we could wait until the next service and check it again. I think that's another rubbish answer but decided to follow that course as the car is behaving fine."

David H., PA (2017 Kia Sorento LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Bushings

"Rubber bushings of some kind in the rear suspension replaced under warranty"

L B., ON (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)
Electronic or air suspension

"Suspension needed factory firmware update. In car electronics needed factory firmware update."

Anonymous, NV (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)

"Steering was sticky - steering column had to be replaced."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Kia Sorento EX 3.3-L V6)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"The steering is the problem and I don't know what particular part of the steering mechanism is the problem. The steering is sticky, notched and the wheel becomes hard to turn at highway speeds. It is fatiguing because I find myself constantly making adjustments."

Greg W., WI (2017 Kia Sorento EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"Steering is sticky, or notched - particularly at highway speeds. This requires constant adjustments and makes it difficult to keep the car in the lane."

Greg W., WI (2017 Kia Sorento EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Steering wheel vibration

"Steering turned as if it was not lubricated. A normal steering wheel turns with no drag. This steering wheel felt like it had more friction and it would stick as it was turned. The dealer tried a cheap fix which of course did not work. He then had to replace a major component to get the steering to work properly."

Brian W., GA (2017 Kia Sorento LX 3.3-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

Luc L., QC (2017 Kia Sorento LX 3.3-L V6)
Stability control (ESC)

"The controller had to be replaced as warning lights came on"

Anonymous, BC (2017 Kia Sorento SXL 3.3-L V6)
