So many small SUVs look like the boxes they were shipped in. Not the Kia Sportage, whose sporty ovoid styling stands out in a rectilinear field. The Sportage offers nimble handling and a roomy rear seat, but otherwise comes up short. Its stiff ride and loud cabin won't endear itself over the long haul. Acceleration with the base four-cylinder engine is leisurely and a lackluster 22 mpg overall proves to be no consolation.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“too noisy ... in cab noise is unacceptable front window pillars are too wide and obstruct left and right road/pedestrian views I will look at another maker in the compact suv caregory next year”

Anonymous, ON (2012 Kia Sportage)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“The ride is not nearly as smooth as our Outback. Feels more like a truck to me.”

KEVIN S., NY (2012 Kia Sportage)

“Seats could be a little better comfort-wise, but not too bad.”

Anonymous, MN (2012 Kia Sportage)

“Very Spacious front and back seats. My 6'4" brother could not believe that there wAS 3-4" of clearance above his head and lots of legs room. Rides really nice with a new set of Bridgestone Serenity Tires.”

Anonymous, CA (2012 Kia Sportage)

“Seats could have a bit more control for comfort, i.e., pitch of bottom cushion. Sometimes hard to find a comfortable position for long-distance driving.”

Anonymous, TX (2012 Kia Sportage)

“Too noisy on the highway. Wish passenger side had lumbar support and seat could b raised.”

Anonymous, FL (2012 Kia Sportage)

“I love my Kia Sportage, but when I compare it to our other vehicle, the noise level while driving is considerably higher and the ride is bumpier. Great car for around town, but not usually the choice for longer trips.”

MARY F., NY (2012 Kia Sportage)

What Owners Say

“I purchased the 2012 Kia Sportage LX which included useful elements such as cargo storage tray, cargo net, extra rubber tray for the back (useful for transporting wet, muddy items, plants, etc.); as well as height-adjustable seat and tilt & telescoping steering wheel. These items added little to the base price but much in convenience. I have found these elements, as well as the general quality, of the Sportage (reasonable powerful and responsive engine, comfortable for 4-5 people, fabric seats,”

MICHELLE R., CA (2012 Kia Sportage)

“My wife loves it”

HAROLD C., SC (2012 Kia Sportage)

“Car is noisy, very light feeling, small cargoe compartment, poor gas mileage compared to engine size.”

PETER R., FL (2012 Kia Sportage)

“Bought it used and it really was a good value used. The false gas mileage claim by the company has cost me more than I was reimbursed.”

JAMES M., KY (2012 Kia Sportage)

“None”

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
