The Mini is a modern reincarnation of a classic icon. Agile handling makes it fun to drive and the front accommodations are surprisingly generous. A choppy ride, tight rear seat and the base model's modest acceleration are notable detriments.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"I had a used MINI before and recently bought this 14 year old as a "toy". I am an aggressive driver and have always enjoyed driving very peppy vehicles. That pep is the main reason I love my MINI. I cannot believe how exceptionally it accelerates and handles at 14 years old! It is a standard transmission, so that helps, but 125,00 miles ain't chump change. GREAT FUN CAR!!"

Deborah W., TX (2004 Mini Cooper)

"handles like a go-cart"

Anonymous, SC (2004 Mini Cooper)

"The generation 1 MINI Cooper is the premier car for go-kart like handling and sporty acceleration."

Alan M., NC (2004 Mini Cooper)

"It is a lot of fun to drive. But it has to be driven, it is not automatic anything. My definition of driving."

Timothy L., FL (2004 Mini Cooper)

"The handling and turbo-acceleration are well-known for the Cooper S."

Larry S., CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"So fun to corner in."

Cliff C., ID (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Handles like a sports car"

Tyler J., CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"It is a great car for zipping around and having fun."

Robert B., VA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Still super fun after all of these years"

Lara H., UT (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Still brings a smile around curves."

CLIFF C., ID (2004 Mini Cooper)

"The Mini S offers outstanding handling and practicality in an everyday vehicle. While it is hard riding the seats are very well configured to relieve my back pain. Maintenance costs are high because of poor build quality but not exorbitant compared to the PORSCHE 997."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Front passenger seat is not very comfortable."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Way too fun to drive. Handles very well and economical, too."

DEAN P., FL (2004 Mini Cooper)

"I love the way this car handles. It is responsive and though, when I bought it, I thought I'd probably not like the manual shift. I now find it a little difficult to put up with the lack of control of an automatic transmission. I found out about he worst thing about how this car handles in the winter. It is terrible on ice and snow. I subsequently bought snow tires and have had no subsequent problemw with winter driving."

Anonymous, MI (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Outstanding handling and utility in a classic design. Very practical and great fun for an auto enthusiast."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"It's like what I imagine driving a racing car must be like. Car handles incredibly, corners like it's on rails and if you don't watch it, you're driving 90mph without noticing..."

Alicia N., CO (2004 Mini Cooper)

"quick and peppy, albeit underpowered when trying to climb a steep hill especially with passengers."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Handles very, very well. As the ad says, like a go-cart"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Love the 6-speed shifting, very good cornering, but the gears are adjusted too low (that is, I need to get in 1st gear to really take off, even from 30 MPH)."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Love the handling. Fun fun fun"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"It is really fun to drive. Like a little sports car. Fast acceleration, small turning radius, handles curvy mountain roads really well. Great gas mileage on highways. It just can’t handle our streets- too many pot holes, speed bumps, etc. replaced 4 axles in the 5 years I’ve driven it."

Anonymous, GA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"handling, its fun to drive"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"everything is super, feel very safe in this car"

Anonymous, GA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"I have the Cooper S and it makes all difference when passing and wanting to move out smartly. I would never buy a Mini without the S and a manual transmission. When I first bought the Mini, a lady at work asked me, “when trucks pass you, do they throw the Mini around?‿ I responded by saying, “with the turbo in the Mini, trucks don’t pass me!‿"

Anonymous, AE (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Most fun car to drive, especially here in the mountains."

Alan M., NC (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Acceleration is excellent. Handles extremely well under all conditions except snow (it is low to the ground). It has saved us many with it's maneuverability."

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Front seats can be uncomfortable during long drives; rear seats don't have enough leg room even for small children"

Anonymous, ID (2004 Mini Cooper)

"This car handles like go -cart! But one sacrifices comfort on rough roads."

Christopher A., ID (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Changed out the low profile tires for more conventional ones to improve the ride."

Anonymous, WA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"The car is very noisy."

Anonymous, MI (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Seats are uncomfortable on long rides"

Anonymous, ID (2004 Mini Cooper)

"The seats are very comfortable. The side bolstering on the back and legs are very comfortable and hold you nicely when going through turn fast."

Anonymous, AE (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Seats are comfortable, there is a lot of external noise from road and wind. The ride might be better if our streets were not so full of pot holes. I pretty much feel every bump in the road."

Anonymous, GA (2004 Mini Cooper)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"It's a fun car to drive, but maintenance, especially parts, is painfully expensive (e.g. Replacement of cracked cylinder head in our John Cooper Works engine) cost ~$3000, not including labor or other needed parts (gaskets, etc.). Total bill was $6200)."

Christopher A., ID (2004 Mini Cooper)

"This car has 250,000 miles, has survived 4 kids driving it and a few accidents along the way and just keeps on going. Still receives compliments on it and has truly raised our family while being a pleasure to drive. Has required minimal maintenance and very reliable and so fun to drive."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"This car has been very trouble-free at over 115,00 miles. The only items I have needed to change are tires and shocks, a rock-dinged windshield, and oil. The dealers over-charge for service, so I go to an independent place. Everyone who sees it can't believe it is 13 years old. I love my car."

Larry S., CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"I have owned the car since new and have had very few problems mechanically: a door lock which doesn't open with the remote is all that doesn't work after 109,000 miles. It's still the fun car that I enjoy driving."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Mini Cooper)

"Our 2004 Mini Cooper has been very expensive to maintain, including having the transmission fall apart at 40,000 miles, costing about $9,000 to replace. On top of that, BMW USA had to be sued before they would admit they had made a faulty transmission. It's a fun little car when it's running well, but the quality for the price leaves A LOT to be desired."

GREGORY R., MA (2004 Mini Cooper)

What Owners Say

"We ordered the car to our specifications, got to "watch its birth and delivery".. the way mini marketed its product was very fun and interactive."
