The Forester is one of the better car-based SUVsÑand is our top pick among small onesÑwith a relatively roomy cargo area. It's also the only small SUV to receive a ÒgoodÓ rating in an insurance industry offset crash test. The Forester rides compliantly and handles nimbly. Its 2.5-liter, 165-hp Four provides good acceleration, and its optional automatic transmission shifts responsively. Standard all-wheel drive also helps it handle most dirt roads and sandy beaches commendably. The front seats are nicely shaped but rather firm. The rear seat is cramped for adults. The Forester just received a facelift, and the company is calling this year's model a 2001.

Road Test

A car-based SUV, such as the Forester, provides many of the advantages of a traditional sport-utility--all-weather versatility, higher seating position, and interior space. In addition, it offers the comfort and road manners of a car.
