Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2009 Subaru Forester owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Minor oil leaks in the cylinder head at around 70,000 miles. Auto tech said this was a chronic problem with these engines. Repair, which included replacement of the timing belt and other 90K service for economy (since head would need to be re-opened to do this at 90K) was about $3200"

Timothy D., WA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"head gasket delaminate and leak oil and antifreeze. Has been a problem since 1999 and for some reason they do not appear to think it is important enough to fix."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine has been leaking oil and antifreeze very badly. Mechanic suggests rebuild"

Anonymous, (2009 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"cylinders had to be removed, heads shaved because of leaking gaskets. Well known problem. In all the Subaru blogs, this problem figures predominantly. Cost of repairs...over $2000.00 CAD"

Kevin G., ON (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Burnt valves"

Timm W., WA (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Bad head gasket, a known problem"

Anonymous, IL (2009 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"I bought this Forester new and since the day I bought it I had all scheduled maintenance completed by the Subaru dealer. At approximately 89,000 I took it to the dealer when the check engine light and traction control lights came on. It was discovered that there was metal particles in the oil which not only required an engine replacement but it also ruined the turocharger. Instead of giving Subaru another penny I sold it as is. I'll never buy another Subaru"

Erik R., GA (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Engine check light came on - in two miles engine was smoking. When pulled over - car caught fire and burned up! This happened May 28th at 5 pm"

Anonymous, PA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine had to be rebuilt because excessive oil consumption caused failure of the rod bearings. No indication of oil issues were reported by the vehicle's internal diagnostics or warning indicators. Low oil pressure warning never activated"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine ran out of oil but there was no sensor light warning"

D M., CA (2009 Subaru Forester)

"The engine had to be rebuilt and they swapped out the lower engine block. I submitted all oil change records to Subaru of America and due to the fact that I took such good care in maintaining the car they paid $2,500 towards the rebuild cost"

Kathleen M., NY (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The 2009 engine needed replacement with a 2011 engine after the 2009 engine threw a rod"

Anonymous, CO (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Ran the Forester out of oil. Check engine light came on and oil pressure light barely flickered. Put 2 L of oil in and mechanic only got 0.5 L out. No visible oil leaks. Apparently this is a common problem with the boxer engines, there is oil blow by into the cylinders and gets burnt up. Subaru dealership said we must check the oil at least every other pick up. After many thousands of dollars for an engine rebuild, we check the oil every fill up now"

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Several years of Subaru Foresters had problems with oil leaks, pistons, and engines seizing. I didn't know about these. On the way back from Colo Spgs, going 65 mph, there was suddenly a loud noise and the car stalled out. It turned out an oil leak resulted in such a major loss of oil that a piston blew. I had to have the car towed and got a remanufactured engine installed for over $5,000. If I had known about the problem I never would have bought the car."

"Engine needed complete rebuild. Had less than 100000 miles"

Anonymous, PA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine started skipping at idle. Check engine light came on. Ended up being 2 bent valves and had to have engine rebuilt. Dealership could not find cause of bent valves only that it was caused by the skipping but not what caused the skipping"

Margaret M., CA (2009 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine has been replaced twice in this vehicle, under original warranty the first time, under extended warranty the second time"

Anonymous, CO (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"There was a worn bearing in engine. Mechanic had to take apart the engine to repair the bearing at a far lower cost than the dealer's suggestion to replace the engine/transmission"

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Main bearing failed. Subaru paid for engine but refused to pay for labour despite the fact that the engine was still under warranty"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"At 59000 miles the engine developed a LOUD banging noise (throwing a rod). Only 2 months after time ran out on warranty! and 1000 miles before the mileage part ran out although the time preceded that. Subaru was of no help at all! Unless I had money!"

Anonymous, MD (2009 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Belt tensioner failed, causing the timing belt to fail and the resulting engine failure. Replaced with used engine"

Christopher E., NB (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The engine seized one day when I was driving. Heard a big bang, luckily was able to pull over. The power train warranty had not expired the engine was replaced at no cost to me"

Liz H., AB (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"We started losing oil during a long drive, so we stopped and filled the oil. About 2 hours later the engine bucked and we lost power and limped into service station. It was towed to nearest dealer where we had to take Uber home. After several days of working on it they found head gasket blown, cam shaft snapped along with numerous other issues that apparently all happened at once. Dealer said they had never seen this type of combined failure. It took them about a week more to locate all parts, some used, to rebuild engine. It has run fine since with the exception of out clutch going out several months later, which was the original and had to be replaced. It was a VERY expensive 12 months of repairs, but it is running very well again. This is first time since we bought new in 2009 that we had any major problems."

Ed C., SC (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Check engine light was on, oil leak also and engine overheating. I was without my car for 10 days. All work was covered by an extended warranty i had purchased form CarMax and also covered a rental car."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Please note that the engine replacement occurred approximately 2.5 years ago and not within the last 12 months. We were told we threw a rod (at approximately 102K miles) and we had a rebuilt engine installed."

Anonymous, CO (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Engine was rebuilt, but because I purchased an extended warranty when I bought the car it was fully covered and i only paid a $50 deductible."

Greg R., AK (2009 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I previously owned a 2002 Forester. At 150,000km I had to replace the head gasket at a costs of $2,200. I am now advised that at 125,000km/78,000miles I have to replace the head gasket on the 2009 Forester. When I mentioned it to Subaru Service Rep, He said" It's quite common" . I really like the Subarus I have owned but it is becoming increaing ly costly to continue owning"

Mary K., BC (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Starting to leak oil. Had to be replaced which was done by removing engine and replacing. Subaru techs told us this was a common problem with higher mileage Subaru Foresters. They told us that this could lead to engine failure if not corrected. This was told to us at more than one Dealership"

"It was seeping for approx. two years. I regularly take it to the dealer, where I bought the new car, for service and oil/filter changes at the suggested intervals. I regularly complained about the seepage and told them it was not air conditioner condesate as it has color and a film when it dripped on the pavement. "Low mileage, but always short distance driving. Had to replace head gaskets when changing timing belt due to oil seepage."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I operated the vehicle for about 2 years with a leaking head gasket on the passenger side. Last February (2019) the driver's side head gasket began leaking. The vehicle had less than 97000 miles on it at this time. I knew that the head gaskets for the non-turbo engines were problematic and mentioned this to the dealer when I took it in to get repaired. The service writer suggested I call Subaru to inquire about providing some financial relief, which I did. The local dealer had quoted about $4000 to rebuild the heads and install new head gaskets as per my request. This included new timing belt, water & oil pump, belt tensioner, fluids, etc. I thought the estimate was a bit high and did get another estimate from an independent shop for $3500. I knew the dealer would also provid a brand new Forester loaner car for the estimated week that the repairs would take, so I went with the dealer. During this time I was contacted by Subaru Customer Care and they offered to re-imburse me for $750, which I felt was quite generous considering the mileage and age of the car. They also sent me a nice pair of Subaru-branded wireless headphones (Jabra) and a Subaru-branded Camelback water bottle. Needless to say, I was impressed with how the dealer and Subaru handled my repair and the effort they took to retain my loyalty. The dealer did a first-class job on the repair, too."

D R., IL (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"After researching possible causes for small oil leaks, it was confirmed that this is a symptom of head gasket failure. The cost to replace was over $2,500. This cost is almost entirely labor, since the engine has to be removed from the vehicle to do the job. It seems they need a more robust gasket design that will last longer than 120,000 miles."

Stuart L., CA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I owned a 2002 Forester that required head gasket replacement at 150,000 kilometers. Subaru's service updates state that they have fixed this problem. I am now advised by the Subaru dealership that my 2009 Forester requires head gasket replacement at 137,00 kms. And advised by Subaru that this is quite common ."

Mary K., BC (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Mechanic said this is a common problem in Subaru's because of engine design. Everyone I talked to who had an older Subaru had the same problem. This is a $2k repair item and I am extremely disappointed that Subaru has not address this problem before. Maybe they have in the newer models but they have lost my business as a result."

"Why does this head gaskets issue keep popping up? I've had 8 Subarus and for the most part am very satisfied with them but I have replaced head gaskets on three (2000, 2005, 2009), all with the same 2.5 four cylinder engine. Why can't they get this one fixed when they do so well on most other things?"

"Foresters have a known issue with head gaskets. Subaru refused to address it because I didn't get my maintenance done through their service center, even though maintenance was performed elsewhere (no receipts). Their service center also informed me it was a HUGE problem that would cost me $2500 for them to fix and it had to be done immediately,, but two other unaffiliated mechanics told me it was relatively minor and I could get away with leaving it for quite some time if I checked oil regularly."

Anonymous, VA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"During a recent oil/filter change at the dealership where I purchased the vehicle, I was advised that the left-side head gasket was leaking, and that the estimated repair cost is approximately $2000. I wasn't able to observe any leaks, and there is no spotting on my garage floor. Looking online, it appears that leaking head gaskets are a frequent problem with this 2.5L engine. From what I read, Subaru made changes to the engine in 2011 in an attempt to alleviate the issue. I haven't had the head gaskets replaced yet. Some other things that the dealership told me cause me to question their diagnoses. I'm considering taking the vehicle to an independent mechanic in order to confirm these alleged problems."

The Forester is used to go back in forth to work (~23 miles each way) on non-highway roads, although it has been used on vacation (highways) and round-about town errands. There are no teenagers or others who may abuse a turbo, so it's failure was a surprise--an expensive one."

I can sometime stop it briefly by shifting gears (manual transmission). I have been told by the Subaru technicians that the only way to permanently fix it will be to remove the heat shields. I am reluctant to have the heat shields removed because I do take the Forester off road & I don't want a hot undercarriage to start a fire in dry conditions. I will endure it for another year or so when the Forester reaches 200,000 miles on the odometer. Then it may be time for a new Forester or perhaps an Outback or Crosstrek."

"I was driving this car this year (typically driven by my daughter) for about a total of 800 miles. (round trip from CT to OH). About 200 miles began hearing a "whining" sound from the front engine compartment. I stopped the car and checked the oil. TWO quarts (out of 5) down!! I refilled the oil (synthetic of course) and the sound went away. I saw NO leaks under the car in the parking space or in my garage (I had the car for about 2 weeks). After 400 more miles of continued highway driving the sound returned. It got me really nervous and I rechecked the oil again and it was 2 quarts down!!! I took the car to Subaru and then to a local mechanic in Cleveland. BOTH of them said, "Oh, this is normal" Subarus just "burn oil". There were NO leaks detected from the head gasket or from the pan (I thought my daughter had run over some parking barriers at work). Both sets of mechanics looked carefully for leaks and NONE were ever detected. So this still seems excessive use of oil and thankfully the local mechanic continues to follow the oil level because it is the same place where she gets her gas fill ups. Otherwise, she wouldn't pay attention. I was wondering if this has been reported by others with the older Subarus. It seems as if the oil must be pushed by the rings as the engine ages, but I could get no confirmation of this from either of the mechanics I spoke with. The muffler and exhaust system had to be replaced because of rot under the car from my daughter NOT washing the car in a "high salt" area during the winter with lots of snow in cleveland ohio."

"Continental Subaru, dealer, installed incorrect non-Subaru parts during a needed clutch replacement. Bad parts made for difficult shifting. Dealer fought replacement for nearly a year. Then replaced it, but caused transmission leaks that took 3 months to get repaired. Dealer/service problem, not the Subaru itself"

"Clutch seemed to be working well until the morning it completely failed in the middle of an intersection"
