Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2009 Subaru Forester owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

“cylinders had to be removed, heads shaved because of leaking gaskets. Well known problem. In all the Subaru blogs, this problem figures predominantly. Cost of repairs...over $2000.00 CAD”

Kevin G., ON (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Minor oil leaks in the cylinder head at around 70,000 miles. Auto tech said this was a chronic problem with these engines. Repair, which included replacement of the timing belt and other 90K service for economy (since head would need to be re-opened to do this at 90K) was about $3200”

Timothy D., WA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Engine rebuild or replacement

“Engine needed complete rebuild. Had less than 100000 miles”

Anonymous, PA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Engine started skipping at idle. Check engine light came on. Ended up being 2 bent valves and had to have engine rebuilt. Dealership could not find cause of bent valves only that it was caused by the skipping but not what caused the skipping”

Margaret M., CA (2009 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Engine has been replaced twice in this vehicle, under original warranty the first time, under extended warranty the second time”

Anonymous, CO (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

“There was a worn bearing in engine. Mechanic had to take apart the engine to repair the bearing at a far lower cost than the dealer's suggestion to replace the engine/transmission”

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

“Main bearing failed. Subaru paid for engine but refused to pay for labour despite the fact that the engine was still under warranty”

Anonymous, ON (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

“At 59000 miles the engine developed a LOUD banging noise (throwing a rod). Only 2 months after time ran out on warranty! and 1000 miles before the mileage part ran out although the time preceded that. Subaru was of no help at all! Unless I had money!”

Anonymous, MD (2009 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Belt tensioner failed, causing the timing belt to fail and the resulting engine failure. Replaced with used engine”

Christopher E., NB (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“The engine seized one day when I was driving. Heard a big bang, luckily was able to pull over. The power train warranty had not expired the engine was replaced at no cost to me”

Liz H., AB (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“I bought this Forester new and since the day I bought it I had all scheduled maintenance completed by the Subaru dealer. At approximately 89,000 I took it to the dealer when the check engine light and traction control lights came on. It was discovered that there was metal particles in the oil which not only required an engine replacement but it also ruined the turocharger. Instead of giving Subaru another penny I sold it as is. I'll never buy another Subaru”

Erik R., GA (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

“Engine check light came on - in two miles engine was smoking. When pulled over - car caught fire and burned up! This happened May 28th at 5 pm”

Anonymous, PA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“The engine had to be rebuilt because excessive oil consumption caused failure of the rod bearings. No indication of oil issues were reported by the vehicle's internal diagnostics or warning indicators. Low oil pressure warning never activated”

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Engine ran out of oil but there was no sensor light warning”

D M., CA (2009 Subaru Forester Unsure Unsure)

“The engine had to be rebuilt and they swapped out the lower engine block. I submitted all oil change records to Subaru of America and due to the fact that I took such good care in maintaining the car they paid $2,500 towards the rebuild cost”

Kathleen M., NY (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“The 2009 engine needed replacement with a 2011 engine after the 2009 engine threw a rod”

Anonymous, CO (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

“Ran the Forester out of oil. Check engine light came on and oil pressure light barely flickered. Put 2 L of oil in and mechanic only got 0.5 L out. No visible oil leaks. Apparently this is a common problem with the boxer engines, there is oil blow by into the cylinders and gets burnt up. Subaru dealership said we must check the oil at least every other pick up. After many thousands of dollars for an engine rebuild, we check the oil every fill up now”

Anonymous, AB (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Noticed a few oil drips on our garage floor. Car had 69,000 miles. Dealer said both head gaskets were leaking. Dealer never warned us at earlier oil changes that the gaskets were seeping and would leak later. No over heating”

Anonymous, NY (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Head gasket had to be replaced”

Anonymous, WY (2009 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Thankfully, I made sure to get this car certified. The certification drive train warrant ran out just after I had the head gasket fixed. Otherwise, I would have been a very upset consumer to pay thoUSnds of dollars for a rumored "consistent Subaru p”

“Leaks in both head gaskets. $3K repair bill”

Anonymous, MA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Was found when we took it in for routine maintenance”

Alicia S., PA (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, ON (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“I was told the head gasket(s) were leaking during routine maintenance. Upon calling various, garages, I now understand this is very common with Subaru vehicles. It cost me $2500 to fix, and that was the lower end of quotes”

Teresa L., AB (2009 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Boxer engines are less forgiving with faulty seals due to laying on their sides. When the head gasket seal failing it caused oil to leak out at alarming rates. It cost $1,200 roughly to repair”

“Noticed more spots on the garage floor. The dealer had identified the leak but it worsened more quickly than expected. Cost was expensive but it has been fine since repair”

Greg R., AK (2009 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“I previously owned a 2002 Forester. At 150,000km I had to replace the head gasket at a costs of $2,200. I am now advised that at 125,000km/78,000miles I have to replace the head gasket on the 2009 Forester. When I mentioned it to Subaru Service Rep, He said" It's quite common" . I really like the Subarus I have owned but it is becoming increaing ly costly to continue owning”

Mary K., BC (2009 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Starting to leak oil. Had to be replaced which was done by removing engine and replacing. Subaru techs told us this was a common problem with higher mileage Subaru Foresters. They told us that this could lead to engine failure if not corrected. This was told to us at more than one Dealership”

Timothy C., FL (2009 Subaru Forester Unsure 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“It was seeping for approx. two years. I regularly take it to the dealer, where I bought the new car, for service and oil/filter changes at the suggested intervals. I regularly complained about the seepage and told them it was not air conditioner condesate as it has color and a film when it dripped on the pavement. After a long, hot, run, for vacation to another state, we ran low on fluids and got stuck in a small town, on a weekend morning, and had to wait hours for the one store to open to g”

“As I commented on the major engine rebuild section the Turbo was ruined by the same metal particles that were found in the oil at approximately 89,000 miles even though I had all the schedules maintenance done by the Subaru dealership. This car turned out to be a major failure. I'll never give Subaru another penny”
