Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The sensor for the rear-lift gate broke so that the trunk would not open and did not think it was closed even if it was latched. The dealership did fix the problem (and gave me a loaner car) free of charge, but it took them two tries so it was still annoying"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"In heavy rain the sensors indicators on the dash board flash on and off indicating the control of lane departure and automatic stopping are not working. The camera gets covered with water and dirt making it hard to see the image of what is behind the car"

Michael C., NY (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Just stopped working, but when I took it to the dealer, it started working again"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Its unclear. Fuzzzy It shows only straight back. No sides approaching exactly back. Several scrapes because i couldnt see what was there"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Subaru Outback)

"There are many safety feature in 2016 Subaru Outback but there is no backup sensors. Of course there is backup camera but it is not enough"

Sangjin L., TX (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

K R., CO (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Display screen would freeze and no functions on the system would work until the car was restarted. Issue was resolved with a firmware update"

Anonymous, MO (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Bought car new Jan '16. Around Nov '16, screen froze, all panel associated electronics went out. Dealer replaced entire unit at no charge. We have had one momentary glitch in screen since but did not require replacement, just turned engine off and back on, with no further difficulty in electronics"

Clif L., OR (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes when I connect my phone and have it charging, I am unable to control the radio through the touch screen or through the steering wheel controls"

Anonymous, UT (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Richard O., MI (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Entire system freezes up. Radio won't play, gps wont work. Subaru unable to fix"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"GPS map would freeze. In fact, everything would. I couldn't move from map display to anything else (like radio). Dealer did a software update, but there are STILL glitches, like the mpg gauge got stuck in showing only negative mpg even though I knew it had to be in the positive"

James T., CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This problem involves the dashboard display icons, messages, and gauges; NOT the infotainment display. This problem happened only once, but it was quite disconcerting. While cruising about 60 mph along a deserted road, the computer controlling the dashboard display icons, messages, and gauges suddenly crashed. Various icons were inappropriately on or off (e.g., the icon indicating the parking brake was on while I was going 60 mph), I think the gauges may have displayed incorrect values, and"

Steve K., CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"SiriusXM radio function locks up and will not play. Slow response from other functions"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Display screen randomly stops working. Or starts pressing buttons on the radio itself, resets a radio station here and there, or just starts scanning for new stations. You cannot stop it, I can turn the radio off and turning it back on does not reset it, it only resets when I have turned the car off and back on."

Frank F., CT (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Navigation unit was replace under warranty"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Unable to change radio stations of screen settings. Solution was to turn of engine and restart."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The display screen froze. GPS, and radio did not work. The whole infotainment panel was replaced two times or more. I had multiple visits to Dealer for this check up and software update all the way till the end of 3 years. So, I purchased extended warranty for 5 years more to have peace of mind."

Chandra, NJ (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"GPS screen would freeze as would the radio. The only thing that would work was the volume. Software update! Things changed for the better for a time, but then the freeze again. The only way to self-fix was to reboot by pulling over, shutting off the car, and then restarting. Another software Update! Stay tuned for what happens next."

James T., CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes the display locks only once a month, sometimes every 3 miles. It might start jumping FM stations every 3 seconds, it might turn the volume up VERY loud. Neither dash buttons nor steering wheel buttons will control the entertainment system. To get the entertainment system working again, at a stop light, I turn the car off, then turn it back on again. I have finally given up using the entertainment system's Aha and Pandora. I have given up pairing my smart phone through blue tooth (I've tried two different smart phones). I now only use the mini-plug connection between my smartphone and the entertainment system. While I get less frequent screen freezes, I still get them, even without a smartphone."

Jameson B., VA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"screen freezes when phone is pugged in"

Joseph F., TX (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, OH (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen will just lock up and I have to shut down the car and restart for it to function as designed. There is a software update available but the dealer wants to charge for the update."

Jerry S., TX (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Starts with navigation system inaccuracies, then stops working completly --- locks the navigation screen. Then the clock and radio stop working. Display system is completely locked up. It resets after the car is stopped and restarted. Problem continues to reoccuer randomly. Has to be taken to Subaru service for new software reboot. Have had softwaer modifications twice. Not sure if problem is completely resolved. Waiting for next reoccurance."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Jon K., NE (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

Display screen goes blank

"Same thing as GPS - all part of the same problem. Replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When I started the car the information system screen would be blank. It would change brightness at odd times when it was working. The volume controls were inoperable at times"

External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The phone constantly connected and disconnected"

Paul M., PA (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"When playing music from the USB interface, the player routinely stops for periods of up to 10 seconds and then resumes, sporadically. Volume fluctuates incredibly. It also takes over 3 minutes to load every time, even if the USB stays plugged in before and after the car is started"

Jean L., ON (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Jerry M., GA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. My granddaughter showed us how to fix the Bluetooth connection on the iPhone. Still, sometimes the car doesn't seem to read it."

Sandra L., ID (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It needed to be updated to a newer version of the software."

K N., VA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Software needs to be updated and the local dealer wants to charge for the update. Since it has never work as advertised it should be a free upgrade."

Jerry S., TX (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I like to plug my phone into the car to listen to music via free Pandora. Often it doesn't connect and I have to just use the radio. The dealer looked at it and said it was my phone (iPhone 6). I uninstalled Pandora app and reinstalled it on their recommendation. It worked for awhile but then the same problem occurred. I have no problem listening to Pandora on my phone."

"See previous post: it froze along with the radio"

James T., CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Whenever a destination is programmed in the GPS, there is no way to silence the loud verbal commands that the system is constantly barking at me. Worsening this terrible design is the fact that whenever the system barks a command at me, it turns way down whatever audio (e.g., CD or radio) I was listening to. Living in Los Angeles, I know that traffic is terrible, and I don't need to hear the system announcing "traffic jam ahead" every few minutes. I also often choose to take a different route"

Steve K., CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Text messages doesn't work most of the time. Navagation and radio froze a couple times and had to restart the car to fix it. Settings and preferences don't work sometimes or don't change at all. Navigation is very convenient but not intuitive to enter addresses or places in the menus"

"The system is not up to date on existing roads. For example interchanges that were added to roads 3-4 years ago do not appear on the display. It is hard to get alternative routes (and sometimes you just can't). Putting in destinations is cumbersome- Google maps is must more direct and simple. Subaru replaced the amplifier under warranty and the problem was solved"

"The in dash GPS is so badly engineered you are better off pretending it is not in the car. Save yourself the aggravation and go buy a dash mount GPS. It's not even subtle, 5 minutes trying to make it actually work while driving makes you think you need to learn how to use it better but you will soon discover it's not you, the system is horrible. Dear Subaru, actually try one on the road before you sell them. UNBELIEVABLY POORLY ENGINEERED HUMAN INTERFACE. Please oh please get the GPS to at lea"

"GPS voice commands were "clipped" so I would not get complete directions. For example: "take the next . . . . ." Some words were cut in half. For example: "turn le . . . ." Dealership said it was a faulty amplifier and replaced it. Problem has not returned"

"On one trip months ago, the navigation system froze up repeatedly. Has not recurred. Despite updating the GPS chip via internet protocol, the map accuracy seems to repeatedly suffer from out-of-date highway/intersection layouts. "The GPS system is terrible, it gives routes that are not logical, and it often warns of traffic jams that don't exist. A software update helped it a little, but all that did was cut down on the number of false reports and it slightly improved routing, but Google maps on our smart phones still provides more realistic travel times and better routes. The GPS unit on this car is a HUGE disappointment."

"I just wrote 1,00 characters and the screen went blank. I spend 15 minutes and BOOOMMMMM what I wasted my time doing is really wasted. The Sirius radio and the entire music system has had to be reset and or given updates from Subaru. I have been driving and all of the presets go to one channel. 3 times this has happened the last time going to channel 34 not a station I listen to or had as a preset. Trying to change a radio station is next to impossible. Subaru has the dumbest idiots preset selection choices. There are 2 arrows one for up and one for down. What a waste they don't work. I have to spin my channel changer and sometimes the stations will go up by 30 or 40 which I wanted to do and sometimes I might go up only 2 or 3. The station changer knob is ungodly small and to go up only one or two is hit or miss. And a station change gets stuck between channels. You can sometimes feel the station change and some times you do not. The radio goes on mute. A little x by the speakers. To get this fixed I have to pull over and turn off my car. I am in my car by myself 99% of the time or with my dog. I can't play with the radio and drive. I have pulled over 10 -20 times. I have taken this to Subaru twice to work on this. Both times I was told there is a new patch or something and they hook my car up to a computer to fix my issues. After 4 or 5 times driving it is just like before. I do not drive much maybe 2 or 3 times a week. If I was asked Would you buy this car again I would say yes but if I based my decision on The radio I would say no no no. I wish this 2016 Outback had a completely different radio that was older school instead of a shiny glass that is a complete disaster. This is my biggest and only complaint. I had this Outback made for me because I did not want or need a sunroof in Florida. A funny thing my dealer now orders 80% of their Outback without a sunroof. More headroom and no rubber gaskets to heat up in the Florida sun."

My dealer later explained that if the car is parked in a part shade/part sun area, the lights (when set at Automatic) can come on by themselves. I don't use the automatic setting anymore. I had another such experience two weeks ago. This time, I was waiting for my wife (she was shopping) and turned on the radio, I listened to Sirius/XM music for 20-30 minutes with the engine turned off. The dealer indicated that playing the radio with the engine turned off for 20 minutes or so can drain the battery sufficiently to make it unable to start the car. When I asked why this might happen, I was told that turning on the radio also turns on other elements of the car's computer system sufficiently to drain the battery and make it unable to start the car."

"I left the vehicle parked for about 10 days (I was away). When I came back, the car was dead. At one point, a small crack appeared in the windshield from behind where the rearview mirror was affixed to the windshield. When I asked the Subaru dealership to diagnose what was going on, they said it was the inside glass that was cracking, not the external glass that is exposed to the elements (and flying rocks). I asked how that could be, as we are a retired couple who are quite gentle with our car. We were told, You must have hit the mirror and it cracked the inside glass. We don't believe we hit the mirror. We settled with Subaru corporate such that we paid half of the windshield replacement/EyeSight recalibration, and Subaru paid the other half."

"With just 41,000 on the vehicle were were on a long road trip from Wisconsin to Florida in January 2019. The day we started we noticed that the dash warning system indicated an intermittent problem with the Blind Spot Warning System (BSD) and Rear Cross-Traffic Warning (RCTA) system. The warnings indicated that the systems were inoperative and we should read the sections of our owners manual for more information. The manual indicated that an accumulation of snow/ice could affect the operation of the BSD/RCTA sensors. Since it was a rainy/foggy day we thought that the intermittent nature of the warning was due to the weather. The blind spot warnings did still work. I noted further reading in the manual that said the BSD/RCTA system could be affected by rear end damage to the vehicle. Our vehicle was never struck in the rear nor did we ever have contact with the rear bumper by hitting an object. The next day the weather cleared but now the BSD/RCTA sensor warning was always on. We were unable to use the BSD warning while driving the very busy I-24 and I-95 highways. We specifically purchased the Subaru Outback because of all of the advanced safety features. Vital to these is the BSD/RCTA system. With the high back seats your vision to the sides and rear are very limited and navigating these highways becomes a safety hazard especially with truck traffic being very heavy on these highways. Wen we reached our destination in Florida we did take the vehicle into a Subaru dealer to see if there was any way to reset the sensors so they would start working again. The answer was no. We would need to replace the master and slave sensor and mounting brackets to get the system functioning again. We couldn't wait until the parts would be available so chose to wait until returning home to Wisconsin. When we arrived home our Subaru service center confirmed that the problem could not be repaired without replacing the parts and performing the necessary calibration. The total cost of the repair would be $1020. I reached out to Subaru to see if they could help me financially. I was able to get them to provide an extended warranty since the problem occurred at 41,000 miles and beyond the initial 36,000 warranty. I needed to pay a $200 deductible. What they discovered is the master sensor failed internally. It took several attempts for them to correctly calibrate the master and slave sensors. I am happy to say the BSD/RCTA system works perfectly once again!"

"Hesitates at low speed acceleration"

Gregory L., VA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission would surge while at a stop light. It felt as if someone had bumper tapped me. Subaru reprogramed the transmission computer and the results were great. No more surges and a considerable improvement to the responsiveness of the CVT. This repair was at no cost to me. I'm a very happy Subaru customer."

Steve G., FL (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car would periodically surge forward. Normally this was a bump but at times car would go forward as much 6-10 ft. Engine also sped up. Not sure this was engine or transmission computer problem."

Norman H., VA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear wheel bearing had to be replaced"

Anonymous, MS (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The car seems to have a problem with the drive system. On slippery roads at higher speeds (> 40mph) it looses stability and easily fish-tails and we have to reduce speed a lot compared to other cars to retain control, even though there tires are in alignment and have good thread. It feels like the wheels are not corresponding to each other and are pulling. I went to deal but they are unable to reproduce (roads are not slippery) and unable to fix. I think there's something wrong with the car and it's not safe. will not buy again."

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine knock or ping

"The ping has been attributed to the valve train (tappets). Noise increases as RPM is increased."

Joseph R., RI (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My car all of a sudden went from getting about 28 miles per gallon down to 18 or 20. It was running rough. I notice every noise because my car is so quiet. I took it in, YES we have an update for your model. My gas mileage went back up to 27 - 28 not quite what I had before but better than it had gotten."

"The seal between the motor and transmission leaked. Engine had to be pulled to fix engine oil leak"

Anonymous, UT (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Small oil leak was originally diagnosed as fluid coming from the transmission, and because Subaru doesn't repair transmissions, the dealership replaced the original transmission with a new one. But the oil leak persisted, for which the dealership had to pull the engine to access the oil leak source and replace gaskets and add sealant to the interface surfaces. The engine was re-installed in the car, and it has been running fine for about 5 months now. Apparently there was no problem with the CV"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It is NOT a leak, it is oil consumption, which you did not offer as an option."

Anonymous, NH (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"At 59,000 miles the low oil light came on. When to the dealership, they said that this was common, and topped off the oil--never got the amount. Topping off oil was done a few times--once was 1 1/2 quarts. Drove the car another 1500 miles, oil light comes on again, the scheduled an oil comsumtion test. They opened up the hood, found that the head gasket was bad and leaking oil. They replaced it, did an oil change. But did not do comsumtion test. Drove car another 10,000 miles, low oil light comes on AGAIN. Service said it was only 3 oz and was not considered a problem by Subaru....so now, I face retirement with a relatively new car that I must carry a can of oil around with. Two days before I was to go on vacation, the low oil light comes on again!. I will go back to Subaru to as them my options....do I want to trade this in for another Subaru problem??? I must say, that the service department is quick to say I need new tires brakes and inside the car filters, but not so quick to fix my oil leak...."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Has engine leaks that dealership has been unable to find the point of origin. They clean and look, but don't know where it is coming from. Have had to add oil on a frequent basis. Dealership has told us it is normal, but I've never heard of or had a vehicle that goes through this large quantity of oil without leaks."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Subaru Outback)

"Past 6 months the engine began consuming oil. I need to add 1 to 2 quarts between each oil change. The dealer is just now working on them problem diagnosis. It appears the engine is burning the oil."

"Battery went dead in the garage, even though the car was driven an average of 15 miles three times a week. Charged it up overnight and it was dead again two days later when about to go to the dealer. Dealer found no problem, but applied software change to increase charging rate. Problem has not reoccurred, but I don't understand why it would have occurred in the first place."

"Battery to weak to start car several times and had to jump start vehicle. Took car to dealer and they said battery tested okay. OEM battery had only 356 cold cranking amps and always cranked slow. Replaced battery at my expense with Sam's Duracell 2 weeks shy of car's 3 year warranty."

Anonymous, MO (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"First winter, battery died. Charged and took for service. Dealer found no problems since battery was charged and engine ran to get to dealer. Second winter. Battery died. Called tow service to take dead car to dealer. They replaced battery. Third winter, battery died. The internet said all Subaru batteries were of poor quality. Bought a new one from NAPA and no problems since."

Thomas R., IL (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Battery died repeatedly, one dealer failed to repair, another dealer eventually replaced battery."

Charles K., NC (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The battery seemed to have insufficient reserve capacity for electrical loads such as required for the headlamps to remain on after for a short time after tuning off the ignition. The car needed jumpstarting several times. When I questioned the Subaru Service writer, he claimed that standby electronics can drain the battery if the car is not started and run sufficiently. They finally replaced the battery after extensive testing. I thought the traditional battery load test and 3 minute charge test would have been enough to determine the battery condition, but they required 4 hours for testing."

Linda K., CA (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rear wheel bearing failed at 40000KM. ABS sensor was damaged by dealer during bearing replacement. Electric motor for tailgate developed a knock and was replaced. Car is now 3.5 years old and already on its THIRD battery. Batteries fail every winter in moderate cold (-10 Celsius)."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"OEM battery is undersized and poor quality. Had multiple problems with battery being dead and unable to start the car. Dealer simply charged it and said it was OK. Would not replace the battery under warranty unless I towed the car in and they kept it for a day to do diagnostic work On the third no start in 5 weeks, I jumped it and took it to the local discount warehouse. I put a new battery in it that had enough cold cranking power (390 OEM vs 750 aftermarket) and the car has been fine since. Subaru should be ashamed to put such a cheap battery in a new car and not cover it under warranty without giving the customer every excuse as to why it is fine. This cheap part makes a fine car seem like it is unreliable junk. If I were to purchase another Subaru, I would take out the OEM battery and buy one that works the first day I had the car home to avoid future problems"

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Torque converter

Louis B., IL (2016 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Starting from a stop while under normal acceleration, my Outback would have a noticeable vibration at 15 to 20 mph. Vibration would stop after accelerating beyond 20 mph. Torque converter was replaced but still have slight vibration at 15 to 20 mph. Dealership will now replace from axles to see if this eliminates vibration. Vibration issue was noticed by me at around 14,000 miles"
