Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

More than just a wagon, the Outback is an intriguing alternative to a traditional midsized SUV. It has more cargo space than most seemingly larger competitors, less thirst for fuel, and a lower price. Functionally, it does everything most midsized SUVs can do -- except tow a heavy load. Subaru has split the difference between a wagon and a crossover, creating a winning combination.

The continuously variable transmission (CVT) has been recalibrated, making acceleration less thrashy. Unless you floor the gas pedal, the engine revs and noise drop off quickly, which makes the car sound much quieter and feel more relaxed. The tradeoff is that the four-cylinder Outback is slower, though it doesn't really feel slow from behind the wheel. With the 2.5i, we measured fuel economy of 24 mpg overall, which is significantly better than any midsized SUV. Six-cylinder 3.6R versions are much quicker and even quieter, with little penalty in fuel economy. We got 22 mpg overall.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Back up warning did not beep"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"passenger side blind spot warning system is inconsistent"

Terrence V., OR (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"Some CD's will not play in machine. It just keeps reading CD and then says Music Not Found. These are even new CD's and Books on CD."

James B., IL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"CD player would not recognize audio books and play them. It would on occasion play an audio book if you loaded it repeatedly until the system recognized it. Subaru replace the CD player along with the Nav system and the problems were fixed. It was under warrenty."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Display screen difficult to see

"Very hard to see in daylight, impossible if sun actually hits it"

Anne G., OR (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Today was a sunny day and I cannot read the dash control screen to see if the AC is on or off, or the outside temperature or the time of day. The GPS and Starlink both do not work well or at all at times but the poor Display Screen for the controls and the XM Radio are so bad and so poorly designed they are a safety hazard showing no customer input at all. I have owned 4 Subaru but this is the last one! Never again will I purchase such a poorly designed auto. Designed by Japenese engineers and n"

Robert L., MI (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"The display screen will freeze when using Navigation. This happens to me when out of town (when navigation is most needed). It happened most times I drove to Los Angeles, but not in Northern Ca. The dealer replaced the unit, and it has not frozen, but Navigation performance is not good."

Marvin B., CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display screen froze up when I had the nav system up. The clock stopped working and the nav system quit working. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a fuse that wasn't making contact. I have since had the radio freeze up on me 3 to 4 times but I haven't taken it back to get it checked out. If I shut the car off and restart it things seem to reset and are fine but I know I shouldn't have to do that."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I think I have described the problems in my last comment. I did not want to give the impression I was not inclined to answer. Love the car - so far - It is our long distance travel car and we do not drive around our home town."

Paul H., ON (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"While driving on longer trips, the head unit freezes. The only way to resolve the issue is to restart the engine, which reboots the system. Subaru is unable to diagnose the problem since it does not occur at the dealership. They denied a request to replace the unit. Awful."

Jeff H., NJ (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen that controls everything has frozen up twice. It seems to be a computer glitch. It fixes itself on its own after an hour or so."

Angela W., FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This is related to my other problem regarding my GPS unit."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"For no apparent reason, the navigation system, including the car’s clock and the operation of the audio system, freezes and remains so until the car is stopped, turned off, a pause, then re-started. I have informed Subaru that this is unacceptable, with a scheduled service in a few days to resolve it. I hope."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display screen freezes up. I took it to the dealer after it happened the second time. Since it was an intermittent problem and it did not do it in the shop, they declined to deal with it. I insisted that the problem was recorded since the car was still under warranty at that time. It is not on warranty any more. The problem has begin occurring again. I believe it is warm weather related. Big concern for me, one that could result in my unwillingness to purchase another car from Subaru, even though this is my sixth Subaru."

Mary H., WA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sirius satellite radio tends to freeze"

Gordon J., MS (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"After a long search, Subaru mechanics found a dead mouse under one of the sensors for the Driver Assist technology. The problem was resolved and I paid nothing. So..an act of nature which does not reflect badly on my Outback."

Anonymous, ME (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"GPS and stereo crashes. Must restart car to reset and use."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It started to switch screens by itself and it froze in the sense that it would not respond to command by touch or instrument until I stopped the car, shut it off and restarted. It was like a reboot of my computer."

Paul H., ON (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Radio / display goes wild: rapidly flips through all saved stations. At other times, screen is also totally unresponsive - does not respond to touch."

Mark W., ON (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen freezes and you have to reboot by shutting car off, Nav, radio etc will not work until you do this"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I had been driving for about 7-8 hours (from Toronto, Canada, to Poughkeepsie, NY.) I had been listening to podcasts on my phone through the car bluetooth system. and then the radio/dashboard system shut down. I could still see the mileage, and the speedometer. But I remember calling my partner (who owns a limousine company and is very knowledgeable about cars), and he said to just shut those things down and let the car rest. I did that and haven't had the problem since. That was about a year ago. I mentioned it to the subaru folks when I took the car in, but they couldn't find anything specific."

Christine H., NY (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Once it freezes - nothing else works....Cannot use GPS (which totally sucks & I have external GPS), cannot change radio, use bluetooth for calls etc - everything is frozen. Sometimes if you pull over and stop, shut car off & on - it resets itself. Subaru has replaced it once & it did help but still does it occasionally. Also MAJOR problem with Sirius radio & subaru radio not displaying channels & more - took over 6 months to resolve (I canceled sirius due to the issue)"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"While changing satellite radio stations system sometimes freezes and requires turning off car to reset"

Anonymous, CT (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Seems random - only rarely"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"large display screen sometime freezes up and goes dark. Only after turning off the road; turning off the ignition; and restarting the car seems to fix the issue. Took the car into the dealer service and they could not repeat the problem. Issue seems to have disappeared in the last 6 months after a SW update to the :Distance until gas tank empty was installed."

Ken L., CA (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Would be driving along and for no specific reason the screen would stop moving for a few seconds and then would try to update but the location was wrong resulting in incorrect info. This would not happen just in remote locations but on major interstates."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"FROZE UP WHILE USING RADIO"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I have had the screen freeze up with bluetooth music playing, with no use of the forward or back track on either the dash or the steering wheel. The only item that would work was the volume/on/off knob. Turning off the stereo and back on again would not fix the issue. Only turning off the car and turning the car back on"

C O., MD (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Map and clock stopped working Radio wouldn't change stations"

D S., CA (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Navigation screen occasionally freezes up with map not moving"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Display screen froze up. Radio, CD, touch screen and steering wheel control unresponsive. Only manual vol. and tuning knobs worked. turn car off/on worked for 10 minutes then stopped. Of course every thing worked at the dealership. They think computer rebooted itself"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Scott J., CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"Driving down interstate all in-car electronics went dark... display, fuel, speedometer, etc. Pulled over at a rest stop and turned car off/on, which resolved the issue."

Anonymous, NE (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Radio was replaced after several visits to dealer, which resolved all problems"

Sharon L., VA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Center console went blank and radio did not function. Subaru and dealer replaced the unit promptly and at no cost to me"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Touring 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Display screen would go grey at times making gps and or radio screen difficult to read.. gps would have to then be used by voice command for turns. Entire electronic unit lost blue tooth for serius and phone pairing. Total unit had to be replaced."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Info / Nav system went black but radio still played. They replaced it"

Kathleen K., MN (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"I am not sure if this issue is really due to my device or the car's systems. Often when I plug in and charge my phone it connects to car and as it should but then after I intentionally disconnect it, it reconnects again. Also, when I select to listen to Pandora, my own Music on my iPhone will bust in. Often there is also a problem with my iPhone music overriding my phone calls. This issue happens when my iPhone is plugged in to USB port not as part of Bluetooth functions."

Anonymous, AR (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"System confused about linking phone about 30% of the time"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Radio replacement fixed the problem"

Sharon L., VA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes reverse camera stays on as I'm driving down the highway and I must stop and restart the car to get the camera. . Sometimes the radio gets stuck on one station and I must turn off and restart car to get it working properly. Lately the two USB drives don't show up on my selection screen so I'm unable to play my MP3s. Hope to get car to dealer this month (June) Sometimes it does not recognize the USB drives (my MP3s)."

"Periodically it just doesn't hook up to phone, or doesn't play."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Navigation freezes, but map displays, so it doesn't provide audible or visual navigation. Have to stop the car and restart to reboot it. Will also take longer routes than necessary. Also, will not provide audio prompts about 50% of the time and/or provide late prompts that are real time e.g. Turn right on X street (as one drives through the intersection)"

Marvin B., CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"GPS has taken me to totally wrong addresses but indicated I was at the right address, it tells me to exit a toll road and has me get right back on, it can not find some addresses. I don't trust the system at all. I have updated maps but it is the worst system I have ever experienced. Subaru said this problem along with the rest of the issues with the radio is a software problem and it is in the 2017 and 2018 cars. I have called Subaru several times. It appears they can not fix it. I am extremely disappointed and plan to get a different vehicle because of it."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The GPS unit would freeze and not even be able to pull up. The clock would also freeze at the same time. We had it in to the dealership several times, which the one time they replace the radio with a refurbished unit. This only happens on long trips, not driving local. We have not been on a long-distance trip since, so I can't tell if it was fixed."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"System is terrible. Warns of traffic jams you are already in, or traffic jams that do not exist, or does not tell you about hazards that DO exist. It proposes detours that are actually slower than continuing on where you are. It looks for things like coffee shops that are behind you instead of ahead. We use Google Maps on the co-driver’s phone if we really need a useful system."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"system complex, difficult to understand, with help from dealer, about 3 times, I am able to get it to work the way I want."

William H., SD (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The In -dash Navigation System is very difficult to use and not at all intuitive the way so many are. A separate Garmin system is much easier to use as is a phone based system such as Waze or Google Maps."

Bill H., MD (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"GPS is awkward to use and unreliable. My phone GPS is much better. If I had known, I would have never paid to have this included in my car."

"The system stopped working when I was in an unfamiliar area. Turns out there was a know issue that I was not made aware of. It was resolved with software update."

David T., VT (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Subaru Navigation is done by TomTom. Apparently TomTom is lousy. It tells me to turn before gas stations that have been gone for about a decade. It tells me to take the next left, then says recalculating route when I do that. It takes me in bizarre directions. This is technically not a problem so it cannot be fixed. Makes me weep about missing my Nissan navigation system. It is a LOUSY system. Oh, and the traffic info is completely wrong."

"System stopped, froze, during use. Had to wait 2-3 months for part. Also it makes a noise, donk, sometimes hourly, sometimes not for days. Noise is tied in to audio direction system, the radio is muted when it occurs. Same as when directions are given."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"These tie together with the whole system but the indash system is so bad, we have an external gps to use. Software updates are a joke & impossible to do. Voice commands don't have a clue what you are saying, there is nothing good to say about the system"

"The in dash features are the opposite of intuitive. Some of it I just can't figure out and the GPS and maps are almost useless compared to the ease with which I can access the information on my phone. The music and stations and in general controls are confusing. Quite often I have to turn the thing off and start again because the menu and sub menus are not intelligently laid out"

Rick W., FL (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Very out to date"

Robert W., AZ (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I just find the system useless - not easy to use or reset. I use my mobile phone or old-style Garmin GPS for navigation. Even though the dealer cautioned me not to use a dash mounted GPS, I have had no problems with the Eye-sight system that were attributable to the cell phone or Garmin GPS, and I find glancing at above dashboard systems much less distracting than trying to read the lower in dash navigation display.."

Carolyn M., WA (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The nav system is virtually useless. The command response is VERY slow, and doesn't always interpret the command correctly. When giving a command to find an address and directions, it takes several attempts before the command is understood and executed - if it is ever understood at all."

"Navigation map freezes. The clock freezes at same time. Only way to fix it is to pull over, shut off engine, then restart. All then works fine, until it freezes again. We will be taking it in for warranty service soon"

Anne G., OR (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"There are numerous instances where the box to enter a destination is "greyed" out and you are unable to select it to change or enter a new address. Backing out to previous screens doesn't work either. I know there must be a simple trick to doing this but it shouldn't be this hard to use GPS. Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Intermittently drops pairing connection, causing call to revert to the handset speaker, which is often in my pocket, so I don’t always hear the caller. If I do realize the call is now on my handset and resume the conversation via the handset the call often reverts back to the car’s speakerphone feature for awhile but often reverts back to the phone again. This creates a dangerous distraction. Also the State of Georgia has just implemented a change to the law making it illegal to use a handset while driving, but hands free communication is allowed."

"Radio reprogrammed twice, then I received a new radio. I have the same problem with the new radio. It freezes and I can tune to another station, turn off or make any adjustment on the radio. XM station comes on and the radio freezes on that station. I have not subscribed to XM. I plan to take my car to a Subaru dealer for service once again."

Don T., MN (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My factory radio in XM mode all of a sudden would not let me search stations thru a genre search. I called XM they confirmed that it is a problem and they are working with Subaru to correct it. The service dept did an update that did not correct the problem. My 2014 Forester and 2019 Legacy both function correctly in the search mode. There is a new tsb# 15-205-16R issued in January 2019 per xm that should resolve the issue. I know this really is not a critical function however annoying. But with the genre search disabled you must manually scroll thru the stations using the knob on the radio. The controls on the steering wheel will not allow you to scan the channels."

"SiriusXM channel selection problem. It became a known problem with 2017 Outbacks. Mine had the problem also. I reported this problem to my Subaru dealer while it was still under warranty. I was told there were two fixes. Replace the radio entirely or there was a software fix coming. I chose the software fix, but it wasn't available at the time. I'm not sure when the software fix became available. I was not notified. I just had a 60000 mile service done and asked about the software fix. It was available. I had to pay for it since my vehicle was out warranty. Not acceptable. I paid for the software update. Now my SiriusXM channel listing works properly. This is an unfortunate, unacceptable Subaru experience for me."

"Had unusual sound which appeared to me to be coming from the transmission when the car was traveling on cruise control around 70mph. Sounded like high pitch whine, but varied in both pitch and frequency. I had a friend record the sound on his smartphone during a drive on the Interstate Hwy. Brought vehicle into dealership and he took it for test drive and confirmed the noise. Surprisingly, he indicated that this sometimes happens and the noise if not from transmission but due to air gap in caulking that mounts front windshield to car. Service Department ordered new front window and replace my original window with new caulking. Sound has not reappeared since. Service done at approx. 5000 miles."

The car had to be taken to the Dealer for a computer reboot which took about an hour. This has happened twice and the Dealer has no explanation other than it was caused by the low battery voltage."

Battery had a bad cell and would discharge itself. Initially problem showed up when ignition left in on position for 20 minutes. Later, wouldn't start in the morning. First time I took it in they said with all the new electronics it doesn't take long to drain the battery. They didn't pay attention until it wouldn't start in the morning."

"The braking system activates when trying to back up/down a ramp for no reason I am aware of. Have tried to have the dealer make it less sensitive, but that did not work."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"When backing out of a driveway, unless you come to a complete stop at the moment the rear tires contact the street, the rear brakes slam on. It's overly sensitive. When I purchased the car, the salesman and sales manager assured me the system can be adjusted if this continues to be a problem (it happened on the test drive). The dealer service department says it's illegal to adjust it. I've talked to Subaru Corporate and have been told 'according to the dealer the system is working as it was designed.' This means they plugged it into their computer and their computer found no issues. It doesn't mean they actually tested it and tried to fix it."

Jeffrey R., CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"All of these systems are tied to the EYESIGHT forward camera. The EYESIGHT systems is tied to the Check engine light which can be set off by something as simple as a loose gas cap. "Under certain conditions you can get a lot of false positive warnings. Example, one time when going from an extreme daylight area to an extreme shaded area, the forward collision activated suddenly braking the vehicle. Also happened when driving into a snow storm. In fairness, if you read the manual, it does acknowledge these situations. Nevertheless, it was somewhat unnerving."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, IA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Passenger side blindspot warning is very unpredictable. It works just often enough to induce reliance but then fails at times. I believe the problem is that is has to be set minimally to avoid activating when passing parked vehicles but then fails to register when passing or being passed by vehicles to the right. It actually is dangerous because the driver tends to rely on it when he shouldn't."

Matt C., TX (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The rear vision system often becomes blinded/confused by sunlight or light colored pavement especially on surfaces changing elevations like a sloped driveway coming down to a crowned street. It then rapidly applies the brakes when where is nothing behind the vehicle. "I had nine dead batteries in the first five months which the dealership said were my fault. The AAA records will show this. Finally they replaced the battery- no apology"

Margot H., NH (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The battery had a bad cell. Many times, the engine wouldn't turn over. Whenever I took it to the dealer, they told me it was fine, and I had left something on to run down the battery. Finally, I asked my husband to take the car to the dealer, they found the bad cell. Go figure. I guess this is more a reflection upon the dealership--very frustrating!"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Electronic ignition

"Had 4500 miles on it. Went out to start car and it was dead. Had to be towed. Dealer said it was a defect Subaru was aware of but no recall ever issued. Their software problem caused battery to run down. Again no recall but ended up stranded because of it."

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"35000 km and the tires are looking like they have 90000 on them. Trouble getting an appointment to get the problem fixed."

Gordon H., AB (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"I believe vehicle had issues with alignment out of the box . Took it to local Subaru, it was supposedly aligned. Then was told one tire was feathered and with 4WD you have to replace all tires. I took it to another Subaru shop and they found issues with alignment again. Had alignment fixed and purchased 4 new tires. So far, it seems to be okay."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I have had 2 outbacks, 2012 &2017. Both came with bad alignment and I had to replace tires after about 25,000 miles"

Robert S., NY (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Shocks or struts

"One front strut was discovered leaking by dealer and replaced under warranty. I suspect this was a very isolated issue."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"experienced steering wheel rattle. Reported to dealership and was told that both rear struts were replaced. After a week squeak could be heard from time to time from the engine bay still."

"After about 12,000 miles of driving the entire front suspension had to be fully replaced, which was done under warranty. It started with a sound like springs creaking and the feel that the car was not stable in the front."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"Steering wanders and feels imprecise. It does not hold the road as well as our previous 2011 forester. I speculate that it has something to do with the extra computerized steering controls."

Anonymous, OR (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Steering rack had a vibration problem causing a rattle in the front end. Dealer did a long analysis of the problem over several days. They gave me a loaner. Mechanic finally addressed the Subaru mechanics internet trouble shooting blogs, and found several dealers in other states who had diagnosed and fixed the problem. It was fixed at my dealer with a new steering rack."

Calvin E., TX (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"I went to the Subaru dealer and complained about the steering on our new car. The car does not hold the road; it wanders about sometimes going to the left and sometimes to the right. The car is terrifying to drive; I thought I was going to die. When I slowed down to a comfortable speed, I was going 10 to 20 MPH slower than the posted speed limit, and lots of trucks and cars were passing me. I don’t mind being passed, but going so slow is a safety hazard for all the other vehicles. The car is not suitable for its intended purpose which is to drive on interstate highways to visit friends and relatives. But the car handles fine at lower speeds such as around town. The problem is just when we are going approximately 70 MPH on the interstate highway. The Subaru dealer checked everything and assured that everything was working properly and as intended."

Thomas P., MD (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Tire wear is uneven

"Tire uneveness was caused by alignment issue. One tire feathered but since vehicle is 4WD was told all 4 had to be replaced since if I only replaced it could cause a problem with differential."

"The OEM tires that came on this car were, in my opinion, sub par, as they handled poorly in snow and dry handling. Within the first year, I had them replaced with a better set that my car wore out in less than 27,000 mi. What was Subaru thinking when equipping their flagship vehicle touted to be fantastic in snow with these tires. -poor! Also, 27,000+ miles on this car and the batter died. prior to this I found that the battery terminals were badly corroding causing the dealership service department to replace the battery cable leads. The dealership said they have said many early battery failures because of cars sitting in lots for too long before they are sold. This sparks me to believe that one should not by one of these cars off the lot but instead order it."

Wheel bearings

"Rear wheel bearings defective (replaced under warranty). Clunking noise from front that took several weeks for dealer to locate and fix (defective engine mount)"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Started hearing a odd sound in rear of car and took it in and had them check it and they came back to give me a loner car and said the wheel bearings were really bad and needed to be replaced right away. Locks and latches

"Rear hatch latch was serviced 4 times before it was properly fixed. Lacy has would not lock and hatch wouldn't stay closed. Dealer was inept in fixing it saying it was user error. Then on 4th service they determined rubber seal was in way"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Mirrors

"The outside driver's side mirror is distorted. I've returned the car to the dealer and they checked it and told me all the Outback's driver mirrors are the same. I don't know if I believe them. The passenger side mirror looks fine and is clear. Very disappointed and wondering if this is worth of a safety recall."

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Wires disconnected"

Automatic climate control

"Feeble system. Cools, eventually."

James N., MD (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Cabin heating temperature was consistently 10 degrees hotter than setting. Subaru corporate said this is within the design criteria of +-14 degrees and won't be fixed. I paid for replacement thermistor and now it's normally 7 to 8 degrees hotter than setting. This minor improvement allows me to set the temperature low enough to get the desired temperature of 69 degrees in the winter. Very lousy customer service by corporate. Local garage wouldn't help."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Automatic climate control tends to cause recirculate to come on too frequently, temperature - fan relationship doesn't work well. Often runs too cold or too hot, too easily influenced by sunlight."

J V., NC (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"The heating temperature control causes the interior temperature to be 8 degrees hotter than the setting. Subaru regional technicians say this is within acceptable limits which are temperature errors of 10 to 14 degrees. I have Subaru documentation of this. Albert K., PA (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited 3.6-L 6 Cyl)
Blower (fan) motor

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"At time of auto purchase, bought option for dealer to install side molding/door edge protectors. Installation was faulty on Right Hand (RH) side front and rear doors such that every time the front door was opened, it caught the molding of the rear door, raising it from car body. Also made an audible 'cracking' noise each time the RH doors were used. Problem fixed by dealer who had to replace both side moldings and reposition installation to correct clearances. Service done at approx. 5000 miles."

It goes right through the clear coat causing a flat, lusterless mark that cannot be removed without clay rubbing and buffing. It will also not accept the NuFinish that I have used on all my cars for years and has protected them fabulously. This Subaru has the worst paint job EVER!!! Reported to dealer, they stated that their detailers are constantly busy keeping the new cars stored outside on their lot free from spots caused by seagull droppings."

Engine knock or ping

"Since new, have complained about a knock in the engine more pronounced when very cold. One 5 degree day the engine knocked severely for about a mile of travel. Like someone beating on the engine with a hammer. The dealer has denied hearing any unusual knock, even under the load conditions I described and they added an extra quart of oil over full to apparently quiet my problem at oil change time. I believe the engine may fail hopefully before my warrantee."

David P., VT (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel leaks

"We had to replace two fuel injectors as they were leaking gas fumes from the engine. This happened on two separate occasions."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Oil leaks

"Transmission leaked at the union with the engine. Dealer used gasket maker to try to seal the leak, to no avail. Eventually determined that the transmission case was cast incorrectly. Replaced entire transmission. In working on the transmission, the oil pan started to leak. They tried to stop the leak, but were unable so they replaced the entire oil pan. This occurred at approx 10,000 miles. No problems in the last 25000 miles."

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Fuel cap

"We failed to replace the fuel cap once after filling up - no big deal EXCEPT after about 200 miles the car decided that it had to turn off all the safety features (adaptive cruise, lane keeping etc)! Only way to get them back was to take the car to the dealer (5 hour round trip)! Really a bad design - replacing the fuel cap would NOT solve the problem..."

Matt C., TX (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel gauge/sender

"Dealer could not figure out issue. I had to do my own research and found a person in another state that had the same problem. I spoke to the service advisor in Nebraska and turned out it was a defective combination meter. Know codes where even showing anything wrong. Ended up with a new combo meter."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The Fuel Gauge does not work if you park the vehicle on an incline. The dealer says there is nothing wrong with the sensor. The only way to keep track of the actual amount of gas in the tank is to keep checking the kilometers travelled."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring 3.6-L 6 Cyl)

"Fuel gauge didn't read correctly. Had this problem from the day of delivery."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Gear selector or linkage

"Sometimee gear selector was not sending a signal to Ignition lock when car is in Park mode. Hence the ignition lock was not releasing the key."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had trouble getting car in park during first year of ownership. Made getting key out impossible once. Had to have two adjustments done. Dealership said this was a common problem. Last week my wife stopped at top of driveway which has a slight incline and needed to get something from trunk. She stopped and placed gear in park with engine running but did not set parking brake, opened door and took two steps out and heard a click and car was rolling backwards down driveway with drivers door open. She tried to re-enter but was knocked down by door and car continued to roll down driveway with her mother in passenger seat belted in. Car rolled about 120 feet before impacting tree that stopped vehicle. Major damage to rear end and car is scheduled to be towed to shop on Wed. Cannot help but wonder if the shift lever was the culprit as both wife and mother in law heard the click before car started to roll. Parking brake was not applied so really unsure what was cause. Very lucky only bruises and a couple small scrapes to my wife and no problems with mother in law."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Subaru Outback 2.5i Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Rough shifting

"At speeds below 20mph when gently accelerating or lifting off the accelerator pedal, the transmission sometimes lurches or has makes heavy 'clunk' when changing gears in this CVT. It shakes the car as if I drove over a wide crack in the pavement. At higher speeds, I don't notice this issue."

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Pressure washer failed on oil pan, all oil drained out of engine on highway causing damage to engine. New short block was put in at only 14000 miles. Several leak problems after initial work, as engine was not resealed fully."
