Even after the "wow factor" of the Prius's hybrid design wears off, the car is still an inviting, well-designed, functionally useful car. Its remarkably high fuel economy makes this a cost-effective commuting car, but the Prius is also practical on longer trips. The gas/electric drivetrain works flawlessly and doesn't call attention to itself.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"It has excellent acceleration on ingress ramps. I think it surprises other drivers that it can get up and go. It has quick steering which I like and takes sharp curves very well. It sticks to road in curves and feels very stable. The only complaint I would have with handling is the 13 inch tires are can make deep snow hard to handle. But it is a small car so I think that is to be expected."

ART F., MI (2001 Toyota Prius)

"Excellent turn radius. Fun to drive."

ANNE R., VA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"It is comfortable to drive in for long periods of time, gets very good mileage, does well on hills and level surfaces. Could use more complementary additions (e.g., map app, tissue holder, audible alarm system)"

VIRGINIA H., VA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"Passing power. This car was bashed by the press for lack of power, but after break-in it actually is quite peppy. Sure it's no Tesla, but it is much more capable than the numbers might indicate."

GEORGE O., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"Easily keep up with urban traffic. Handles well in city driving"

WALTER M., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"Goes where you point it. Very good turning radius."

James C., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"It's an early model Prius. It's acceleration and handling are a yawn but satisfactory under most conditions."

Elliot R., MD (2001 Toyota Prius)

"Great acceleration from a standstill. Not a whole lot a power for climbing steep hills, but I don't need to do that very often."

Wayne S., CO (2001 Toyota Prius)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The suspension is bumpy, but then the roads are so much worse than when we bought the car."

CATHERINE C., MI (2001 Toyota Prius)

"too much road noise, can't hear the radio/cd when on highway."

PAUL R., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"A very comfortable car. Very quiet (of course). Excellent turning and good acceleration. It's still fun to drive."

Anonymous, CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"The seats are a bit short for leg support for me as I am a taller than average person, so the seats are not comfortable for long trips. But the noise level is very good and the ride is also very comfortable."

Dennis C., WA (2001 Toyota Prius)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"We bought this car new in 2001 and have loved it ever since. We've put very little money into maintenance and repair and it's still going strong 15 years later."

Anonymous, CT (2001 Toyota Prius)

"105000 miles with no major repairs. Perfect for urban driving"

WALTER M., CA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"Considering it's frequency-of-repair record, mpg rate and other factors ... even a 1st generation Prius is one of the best values, on the road."

JOHN B., KY (2001 Toyota Prius)

"Low pollution, high mpg, drives well, and low maintenance costs. Best car I've ever owned! On the other hand, I'm concerned about when I'll need to replace the hybrid batteries and how much this will cost."

Wayne S., CO (2001 Toyota Prius)

"A great car, and a lot of years of excellent service. Glad to have gotten in early on the hybrid revolution."

Geraldine G., MA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"This car just keeps on going. It runs as well today as it did the day I got it and I will never trade it in!"

Anonymous, PA (2001 Toyota Prius)

"This was an inexpensive early Prius model. It's still running and has been mostly trouble free all these years."

Elliot R., MD (2001 Toyota Prius)

"The Prius has been very inexpensive to own, not only saving on fuel costs, but there have been few repairs required over the 17 years we've owned the car. Even the front brakes are still original!"

Dennis C., WA (2001 Toyota Prius)
