What Owners Say
"SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OTHER CAR I HAVE HAD.BACK UP ACCELERATING IS. A BIT SENSITIVE. I WOULD CERTAINLY DESIRE LESS ROAD NOISE! I THINK THIS COULD BE RELATIVELY EASY TO IMPROVE WITH CARPETING, ETC. WHEN OTHER PEOPLE DRIVE MY CAR, THEY WANTED IT THEMSELVES. (2009) THE CLIMATE CONTROL ON THE DRIVAERS' SIDE IN COLD WEATHER IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR WARMTH. THE LED DISPLAY IS NOT GOOD. NO ONE CAN SEEM TO CONTROL THE BRIGHT DIPLAY AT NIGHT. IT IS TOO TRICKY TO TURN BACK ON OR TO CUT THE LIGH"
DONNA S., OR (2009 Toyota Prius)"I was very unexpectedly pleased with the quick acceleration, and acceleration up to 80 mph; then it dawned on me - I have 2 engines."
KENNETH B., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"It seems to hover over the road and doesn't take bumps very well. The yellow light comes on and it feels as though I am going into a skid."
P L., MA (2009 Toyota Prius)"I found that the car's computer, using cruise control, gets the best gas mileage. So I use it whenever I can, even on city streets going as slowly as 25 mph."
STUART B., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Front wheels often slip when trying to accelerate quickly especially on wet roads with good tires."
RICHARD S., MD (2009 Toyota Prius)"Mediocre tires. Adequate handling. Adequate acceleration. Not the car for high speed pursuit or truly bad weather- but absolutely fine for day to day driving around."
ED E., PA (2009 Toyota Prius)"only road noise bothers me; acceleration and handling satisfactory."
DONALD W., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Performance very well for such a small engine"
TIMOTHY C., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)"a fun car to drive"
W B., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)"after purchasing the vehicle, took a rode trip to Washington state. during the journey, encountered a variety of weather, a variety of height elevations, unexpected obstacles, many varied road conditions. the Prius handled well! very surprised and satisfied with the overall performance. one obstacle in particular the prius came upon allowed us to name the prius, Tumbleweeds. It handled the maneuver like a champ!"
LOY H., OK (2009 Toyota Prius)"The Prius, compared to the CR-V, is slow to accelerate and has sloppy handling and dead, no feel of the road steering."
T B., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)"Even though this car gets excellent gas mileage, I still have a very good acceleration as well as very good handling on the road."
Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota Prius)"I would like to have the 3 power choices other then that it handles well."
WILLIAM M., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Just somewhat sluggish in accelerating. Brake response is different than past cars I've owned: there is a slight delay in the brake response because of the newer technology."
Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is good. Handles like a charm. Corners well."
ROBERT S., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"My next car may be purchased with better acceleration"
Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota Prius)"The ride is a bit noisy and rough (I feel ever bump in the road)"
Anonymous, NY (2009 Toyota Prius)"We tend to try to beat the EPA MPG ratings and can do it on long trips; sometimes around town. Cold weather and very hot days with the AC running are the exceptions. If I need the acceleration, it is there."
PETER E., NC (2009 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is sluggish but decent for a four cylinder. The steering is mushy and sluggish, which seems to be the hallmark of Toyotas (I owned another Toyota Avalon which also had mushy/sluggish steering)."
Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is really acceptable. Handling is quite poor. Lots of body roll. Fells unstable on windy days."
Anonymous, MA (2009 Toyota Prius)"wimpy acceleration. can hardly clime steep hills or mountains."
Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Do not feel safe driving this car in inclement weather. When air conditioner is on, engine sounds like a truck engine straining with up hill acceleration. Drove cross country and on a few long trips in this car very comfortably. One long trip was with 4 adults. Plenty of space and 50+ mpg. No inclement weather however."
WILLIS G., TN (2009 Toyota Prius)"good acceleration, fun to drive."
W B., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)"Its acceleration is adequate and handling is good, but the cruise control is imprecise and annoying to use."
George S., CO (2009 Toyota Prius)"Love how quietly it rides, especially at low speeds on the electric engine only. Reacts agilely at any speed with either/both engines. And does okay accelerating onto a freeway, although you can hear the engine laboring slightly to do so."
Jean C., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)"Drives well - reliable. OK handling in the winter, wish it had all-wheel drive."
Timothy P., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)"Didn't I just answer this? You got me confused----"
Anonymous, AK (2009 Toyota Prius)"underpowered on most hills."
Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"I can count on the power when I need it. Not too often do I need it to accelerate but its there."
Anonymous, CO (2009 Toyota Prius)"Usable acceleration and predicable handling. Make sure tires are up to snowy conditions"
John K., IL (2009 Toyota Prius)"The car handles well. Acceleration is not outstanding, but I was not looking for a race car. I wanted a car with outstanding mpg and it delivers. It's fun to watch the mpg on the display and see how small adjustments in driving habits (like not trying to accelerate from zero to 45 in a few seconds) can make a huge difference."
Christine E., PA (2009 Toyota Prius)"155,000 miles with no major issues!"
Kerry T., MD (2009 Toyota Prius)"Handles very well. Accelerates very well."
Anonymous, WA (2009 Toyota Prius)"You have to get used to driving a Prius, it's slightly different than a gas car but can accelerate responsively when it has to."
Anonymous, MN (2009 Toyota Prius)"The acceleration is strong for such a small engine & the turning radius is excellent!"
Daniel C., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)"It has a terrible blind spot that is quite dangerous, especially on the highway."
Anonymous, TN (2009 Toyota Prius)"handling and acceleration are more than adequate for both street and highway driving"
Anonymous, PA (2009 Toyota Prius)"I recently found myself on a two-lane road where I had to pass slower vehicles during breaks in oncoming traffic. While the car was up to the task, it was obvious that the engine was working hard. Test drives of the newest generation of Prius lead me to believe that this issue has been addressed. Driving at freeway speeds was a bit noisy, but the engine was up to the task (even during prolonged periods of upper 90 degree weather)."
Mark S., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)"Handles well, acceleration is just fine (if that were a concern, I'd never have bought it)"
Stephen P., FL (2009 Toyota Prius)"Love it!"
Anonymous, NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)"It accelerates very well considering the gas mileage and handles very well."
Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota Prius)"Handling is good but acceleration up hills reminds me of a Volkswagen beetle"
Daniel C., GA (2009 Toyota Prius)"My complaint is about it's built in GPS. It's hard to use and too many times took me to unexpected locations rather than the one I thought I requested. So I went back to my trusty Garmin which never lets me down."
Joseph G., OK (2009 Toyota Prius)"The gas milage always puts a smile on my face at the pumps. Handling is very good for the small engine thats inside the hood. Your not going to win the quarter mile drag race, but it has enough xxxxx to pull away from road hazards."
Clement S., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)"It has rather mediocre acceleration and has a difficult time getting started on wet pavement."
Anonymous, FL (2009 Toyota Prius)"The prius exceeds expectations in driving, style, power, handling in rain and snow, and mpg. It fails considerably in the engineering of the navigation system. I gave up on it shortly after I purchased it and went back to my tried-and-true Garmin GPS. It baffles me that the rest of the engineering could be so good and on this one element, they failed. Couldn't they just partner with Garmin?"
Michael S., OR (2009 Toyota Prius)"It’s not ultra fast but it can hold its own up to 75 mph which is too fast in any event. The car is sure footed in summer and winter."
Stephen P., PE (2009 Toyota Prius)"Love it’s handling, it’s very small turning radius. With both engines engaged, it accelerates beautifully, if a bit noisily."
Anonymous, TX (2009 Toyota Prius)"Handles well in city driving and on road trips."
Anonymous, VA (2009 Toyota Prius)"The Prius, when roads are wet, will ALWAYS slip when starting from a stop at an intersection. The tires don't get a purchase on the road. This is really bad when you are attempting to get into traffic in a hurry from say, a stop at a side road road onto a major thoroughfare with traffic. That slip of the tires causes a hesitation before the car actually moves forward. Also, the car is not good in snow, though my brother and parents both had Priuses and put snow tires on them and said that improved the driving in snow. One other issue of note. I have reynauds, which means when my hands and feet get cold they go numb and turn white. In very cold weather, the Prius doesn't put out quite as much heat as does a traditional gas fueled engine car. This has been a problem for me living in Minnesota."
Dawn V., MN (2009 Toyota Prius)"easy control, very good turning radius"
Barbara S., NC (2009 Toyota Prius)"Without even trying, usually the first out at a stoplight change."
Anonymous, AZ (2009 Toyota Prius)"Short turning radius; good acceleration since both the gas engine and the electric motor work together."
William M., WI (2009 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is sometimes too sluggish for safe freeway driving in emergency situations."
Linda P., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Prius is the car we take on long trips. Acceleration is adequate for highway driving. Car handles well except on snowy or icy roads, then not so well."
Anonymous, CO (2009 Toyota Prius)"Fun to drive. Holds the road well on corners, responds quickly to a situation like another car coming into your lane. Has plenty acceleration and power getting onto highway that is going uphill."
Dana J., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Surprisingly fast off the line and easy to steer in tight spots."
Scott C., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"We have over 220K miles and it still is a pleasure to drive. Seats are comfortable and almost look new. I have no trouble driving with traffic at internet speeds."
Anonymous, TN (2009 Toyota Prius)"I feel I have good control - tight steering, responsive braking, fantastic acceleration and maneuverability in tight situations"
Kim H., NM (2009 Toyota Prius)"It is remarkably peppy for a car that gets 42 mpg. Performance is better when it's lightly loaded, of course. Handling, braking and steering took a little getting used to when I first bought the car, but the learning curve was quick."
Tom G., NC (2009 Toyota Prius)"Accelerates well, great mileage. Good handling on highway"
Ellis C., CO (2009 Toyota Prius)"It's very average."
Charles K., MI (2009 Toyota Prius)"No road feedback to the steering wheel causing multiple input to the wheel from the drive. Suspension is so-so - sloppy. Otherwise a very reliable auto."
T B., NJ (2009 Toyota Prius)"It is a fun car to drive, small, easy handling and smooth"
Warren B., NY (2009 Toyota Prius)"Its acceleration is adequate to keep up with traffic and its handling is good."
George S., CO (2009 Toyota Prius)"Handles ok, a little loose at highway speeds, but accelleration is even worse than my 2001 Prius. Still love the car, but it sure is slow."
Robert R., CA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Handling is great! acceleration is slow."
Jim L., MA (2009 Toyota Prius)"Hard to see out of the car--roof supports are too wide"
Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)
"My major problem with Prius is the number of BLIND Spots. Both front side mirrors block a large area snd the rear window in separated by large area in the middle. I don't feel as safe driving this as I do some other vehicles."
Anonymous, CA (2009 Toyota Prius)
