What Owners Say
"Love the MPG and it is my go to car, we have 4 of them."
Larry C., PA (2008 Toyota Prius)"It's noisy and it seems like the engine revs very high for the speed, like the car is a little underpowered. This is most apparent at highway speeds."
Patrick L., WI (2008 Toyota Prius)"It is a Touring model and feels like a substantial vehicle despite the good fuel economy."
Anita O., NM (2008 Toyota Prius)"Lacks acceleration when merging on to highway."
W K., VA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Poor acceleration and handling. It's hard to get up to speed while merging onto a highway. Steering feedback is terrible."
Anonymous, MD (2008 Toyota Prius)"Considering what is is, the acceleration is adequate and handling good."
Anonymous, PA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is somewhat slow, but I expected this for a hybrid. My understanding now is that new hybrids and electrivcs are much better."
J C., NY (2008 Toyota Prius)"I rarely pass a vehicle on 2 lane roads, the oomph isn't there to do so safely."
S F., NY (2008 Toyota Prius)"Somewhat underpowered and rough ride. Our model is the Touring which is somewhat stiffer."
D H., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Lethargic acceleration Unsettled braking on uneven surfaces"
Jose V., ON (2008 Toyota Prius)"driving is fun in the mts. handling very good for size of car."
Jim T., CO (2008 Toyota Prius)"Accellarion good. Handling ok"
Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Prius)"My wife loves this car!"
Jeffrey J., GA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The acceleration and handling is more than adequate for a vehicle that can get almost 50MPG"
James L., TX (2008 Toyota Prius)"Car has trouble going up the gravel drive..front wheels always spin even when it it dry. it is a great highway and in-town car, but the keyless entry is expensive and we have had to replace it twice in the 10 months we owned the car."
Anonymous, KS (2008 Toyota Prius)"Can be sluggish to accelerate. Need to move the pedal farther to get acceleration than you would have to in a conventional car, so takes some getting use to."
Carl V., NJ (2008 Toyota Prius)"Comfortable ride with great acceleration and handling. Inside of vehicle is larger than it looks from the outside."
Anthony S., MS (2008 Toyota Prius)"very roomy in this model excellent acceleration"
S B., OR (2008 Toyota Prius)"Noisy when accelerating or going up hills. Insufficient engine braking when descending steep hills."
Glen T., VA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Extremely reliable, consistent performance. Easy to drive, easy to maintain. Not luxurious, but always delivers the performance we expect."
Edward W., NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"Peppy, zooms around and easy to park."
Doug M., OR (2008 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is not quite what it was in other cars I've driven, but not bad, and once I got accustomed to that it doesn't bother me. I am completely happy with how it drives now that I'm used to it, with one important exception: traction. The traction is really questionable, even on WET roads, let alone snow or ice. We put the very best tires we can find on the car, but are still wary about using it in bad winter weather. Very glad to have a Subaru for winter!"
Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Prius)"We had a 2005 Prius and this one handles and rides better."
Anonymous, CO (2008 Toyota Prius)"Too much cabin noise"
Hank F., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration and handling is fine except in a cross wind."
Clyde S., KS (2008 Toyota Prius)"It's a little bit sluggish on acceleration but the handling is very precise and comfortable."
Mike M., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Touring edition is very solid on turns and curves."
Deborah H., WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"It seems underpowered and very noisy as the motor winds out. Handling is fine."
Anonymous, WI (2008 Toyota Prius)"handling and acceleration are more than adequate for both street and highway driving"
Anonymous, PA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Very satisfied with the practical balance between fuel economy and power/acceleration. This prius has been used to pull a loaded trailer and carry very heavy loads inside and on a roof rack. It handled all this very well."
Anonymous, MI (2008 Toyota Prius)"It seems to have lost some power when accelerating up hills."
Sharon P., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Never any problem with handling. Takes corners nicely. Accelerates nicely."
Barbara L., FL (2008 Toyota Prius)"The Prius still has excellent acceleration. It has always handled like a dream."
Joel R., AZ (2008 Toyota Prius)"The handling is mushy. It doesn't grip the road like my 1985 Honda Accord. The Honda always felt very secure, even at high speeds. The Prius feels floaty, as if it would lurch off a curvy road except at very moderate speeds."
Lynn L., OR (2008 Toyota Prius)"Pleased with acceleration for hybrid small car at on ramps, interstate driving. Am a small person and car comfortable, acceptable response in turns, rapid response situations. Love it!"
Barbara H., TX (2008 Toyota Prius)"driving is not precise, tends to wander on road. not an alignment issue. acceleration is an effort, engine revs loudly."
Anonymous, IN (2008 Toyota Prius)"Average, nothing special"
Anonymous, RI (2008 Toyota Prius)"I like the handling and accelerating past gas stations"
George A., VA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Great acceleration and handling. Best car I’ve ever driven."
Elizabeth R., WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"hill climbing lags a bit on freeways"
Henry S., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Easy to drive. Because of the mpg I have become a safer driver."
Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is more than adequate for entering highways and it handles well."
Traci T., SC (2008 Toyota Prius)"easy to handle, good turning radius"
Barbara S., NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"Very responsive in handling"
Anonymous, WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The acceleration is acceptable for a car averaging 46mpg. It handles very well."
Clyde S., KS (2008 Toyota Prius)"Handles very smoothly and maneuvers easily."
Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Prius)"no problem getting in and out of traffic"
Susan R., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The MPG was decreased over the years, but the current MPG is still better than our Infiniti"
Anonymous, GA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The light weight and overall height made the car sensitive to side winds. I added the "Touring" components. Otherwise, very satisfactory. Not the fun of driving my BMW's, but we were looking for a different experience here. Also, the simple-minded traction control made this a very marginal snow car - any slippage of one wheel shut down the motor - actually dangerous in some situations. One could try to pull out from a turn, lurch into the intersection, and have the traction control cut the engine. I bought a set of dedicated snow tires and rims which helped, but still not a good snow car."
Kristin P., WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Just about perfect"
Anonymous, PA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The bad for me is I has to replace the battery and this car is just over 20 years old. It cost close to $3000. The acceleration is good in this car but if I stomp on the gas, there is hesitation. It handles great"
Louis M., AZ (2008 Toyota Prius)"It still provides needed acceleration on the highway to get around traffic"
Robert K., VA (2008 Toyota Prius)"I kind of understand how those accidents happen with the Prius jumping out of control while driving (the steering). Luckily I DO keep both hands ont he wheel most all the time. There fore when I hit a bot hole or someother bump on the road I can feel the steering wheel "trying" to JUMP out of my hands. Like if I did not keep a FIRM hold on the wheel the car would totally go off on it's own, I DO keep a firm hold and it only takes seconds to rectify! That is scary when it happens. Did you ever do a recall on that steering issue? Perhaps I should take my car in and have them look at it.. Free of Charge of course, and YES, I have had this issue since I have had the car, I just chose to manage it and deal with it..and I guess perhaps I am "lucky" I have had no "serious" issues as a result of that happening when I hit bumps, ie potholes"
Anonymous, PA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Accelerates well enough to merge in freeway traffic. Quiet at all speeds."
Anonymous, MN (2008 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is poor. It can maintain speed but engine can be noisy at high speeds. This is VERY noticable when the car is fully loaded."
Anonymous, NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"a little slow on start up and hesitation on switch over to motor mode above 30mph"
Anonymous, IL (2008 Toyota Prius)"Smooth, enjoyable, almost as good as a Lincoln Towncar."
John P., NY (2008 Toyota Prius)"Very noisy acceleration, easily pushed by wind, corrective measures at speed are likely to cause poor consequences."
Anonymous, VA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Great acceleration in power mode"
Anonymous, PA (2008 Toyota Prius)"It accelerates a bit on the slower side but maintains whatever speed easily. It is responsive to turns and changes direction easily."
Anonymous, ME (2008 Toyota Prius)"reasonably good, not tremendous acceleration, but one doesn't expect that in this kind of car"
Anonymous, MD (2008 Toyota Prius)"This car really has not aged in performance! It still handles well, accelerates well, loves to go over 70 mph and gets its best mileage at higher speeds! Other than checking/adding oil in between changes it has no problems. Just a couple times it needed mechanical repairs which were dealt with readily by AAA and Toyota. Now it's out of warranty but shows no signs of problems! Its extremely dependable and I love the quiet electric motor and the mileage!"
Sharon H., WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"First it is not a sports car. However as an everyday family car , i feel it to be a good overall handling vehicle. The acceleration is sufficient for almost all situations. I have never had an issue with blending into highway traffic from an entrance ramp. I have traveled on 1400 mile trips with the cargo area fully loaded and the car handled wonderful. It does well in snow with good all season tires and I feel comfortable in heavy rain."
Anonymous, NY (2008 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is good,. handling feels solid and well-made."
Ryan J., IL (2008 Toyota Prius)"Accelerates very well, but also the accelerator pedal is touchy at low speeds. Handling is predictable, but vague."
Anonymous, TX (2008 Toyota Prius)"Has excellent acceleration and handling,"
Bob S., CO (2008 Toyota Prius)"with upgraded tires, handling is very confident. Wife loves the sure feel, good visibility (has rear camera). For small car does OK at highway speeds on long trips."
Anonymous, NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"Initial acceleration is good due to dual gasoline and electric motors. Somewhat less acceleration at higher speeds. Extremely easy to handle and park."
S G., FL (2008 Toyota Prius)"Could be quieter, peppier, and have tighter handling."
Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Fine on highways, even when we lived in the Austin TX area with its interstates and vert fast traffic. Could be difficult, even dangerous in a few entrances and exits within Austin."
Anonymous, WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The car runs fine on the highway when I have already accelerated to a high speed and of course gas mileage is great; but I live in an area of rough and sometimes steep roads and this car cannot negotiate these very well. I have had to back down a street that a friend lives on because the car just could not make it up to the top. Snow can make the task even more difficult. My last car was a Toyota Tercel with standard transmission and I could go anywhere if I downshifted into first or second. In addition the Prius sits too low to the ground--great care has to be taken on unpaved roads and many people in my area live on unpaved roads."
Joanna B., WY (2008 Toyota Prius)"ease of driving in traffic."
Anonymous, NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"Torque and acceleration excellent. Especially using the battery, smooth, powerful."
David K., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"I wish it had more acceleration, but, once it gets up to speed, it is smooth and capable of the high speeds demanded on the Californnia freeways."
Y K., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The Prius does not turn in quite the same way as other cars we have driven. The front feels like it's turning wider. It took a few months to get used to it, and compensate for it."
John B., MD (2008 Toyota Prius)"Surprisingly good acceleration for a4 cylinder hybrid"
R R., NM (2008 Toyota Prius)"Difficult to use for interstate driving in hilly terrain (e.g., U.S. 17 in NY State)"
A W., CT (2008 Toyota Prius)"I have a friend who had never ridden in a Prius. She kept telling me how slow and awful they were to drive. Then she rode with me. You should have seen the look on her face when we easily merged with cars going better than 70 mph. I haven't heard a single snide remark since then!"
LOIS C., NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"For a hybrid excellent acceleration."
T B., FL (2008 Toyota Prius)"This touring sedan handles as well as premium sport sedans I driven. Excellent handling car."
BRUCE E., AZ (2008 Toyota Prius)"Drives great."
ROBERT H., FL (2008 Toyota Prius)"Very dependable."
Anonymous, NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"feel the lesser power and the battery/engine kicking in handout"
JANICE R., OH (2008 Toyota Prius)"Handles great. Fantastic accelaration."
JAY B., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"acceration fine, handling is very poor"
Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"I've gotten used to it, but it's a little pokey and the drive by wire system's lag is still noticeable especially especially compared to my Honda Ridgeline."
Anonymous, WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Solid car. After the dealership performed 120,000 mile tuneup (I chose to have it performed early), mileage dropped 3/4 miles per gallon. Dealership states they did nothing to alter my mileage."
DENNIS R., WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Gas mileage is the best. I will always purchase a hybrid in the future."
Anonymous, GA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Poor traction in snow"
Anonymous, PA (2008 Toyota Prius)"When starting out on an uneven or rough surface, the drive system is often fooled into thinking it's on a slippery surface and throttles back and forth when you try to accelerate out into traffic at a faster pace."
BRIAN F., AZ (2008 Toyota Prius)"The headlights were never very bright, the Toyota dealer fine, but I took it to an independent , mechanic who diagnosed the problem in less than 5 minutes and replaced the bulbs in less than 30 minutes. On the positive side, it is a comfortable drive and gets consistently good 44mpg."
Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration and handling are ok, thought noisy ride"
Anonymous, CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"We really like our Prius, but wish it had a little more ground clearance. Mud, leaves and debris coat the underbody since it is so close to the ground. We also scrape all the plastic pieces under the front of the vehicle."
RICHARD N., OR (2008 Toyota Prius)"The car drives well in general, is responsive and solid. My one wish as a resident of MA with timeshares in VT is an available all-wheel drive, such as I had on my previous car, a Subaru Forester."
GEORGE B., MA (2008 Toyota Prius)"not very fast, but sporty isn't why we got it."
Anonymous, IN (2008 Toyota Prius)"This is not a race car, but it has plenty of umph for merging, entering a highway etc. It has never been a problem for me. The ESC, as you recommended years ago, is fantastic. I've taken this car to an ice covered parking lot, accelerated and turned. The ESC has always kept the car on track. It is a fantastic safety feature."
PAMLYN A., MA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The car is easy to handle. Acceleration is satisfactory but could use more power when entering freeway."
JOHN B., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Blind spots everywhere."
R R., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Turning radius is good. Easy to handle"
Anonymous, IL (2008 Toyota Prius)"It is a little sluggish in accelerating."
STANLEY A., PA (2008 Toyota Prius)"In the flat lands of Texas, car has as much acceleration as any SANE driver needs. We took it to Colorado one year, and it struggled on the very high mountain passes (although this is an extreme case)."
Anonymous, TX (2008 Toyota Prius)"When car hits bumps it occasionally skids for a brief moment. This has been an issue I believe with Priuses."
Anonymous, OR (2008 Toyota Prius)"The Prius handles extremely well. You always feel in control in this car."
MICHAEL G., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"actually its in this category that terrible rear vision arises."
ERNEST H., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"The Prius has over 300,000 miles on it, still drives so comfortably, handles so smoothly, and the gas mileage is fantastic, sometimes 55 mpg on a tank of gas that includes a lot of highway driving. Would buy another Prius in an instant, and plan to if and when this one ever dies. The Prius has paid for itself in gas savings over the mini van that used to get 25 mpg (which wasn't bad)."
JAMES L., IL (2008 Toyota Prius)"View in rear view mirror is weird and poor."
GEORGE B., AZ (2008 Toyota Prius)"Turning radius and handling"
GENE H., TX (2008 Toyota Prius)"I had to add the Touring suspension to make it handle better in crosswinds, but have been very happy with it since then."
KRISTIN P., WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"we had a previous 2008 Prius that averaged 50 mpg and this one has never done that. Repeated requests to the dealer never changed to lower mpg"
ROLAND F., CT (2008 Toyota Prius)"This Prius has performed very well on the flat driving, which is by far the most common. It struggles to climb the mountain roads Arizona. It performed very well on cross country trips from AZ to Minnesota and Illinois, with freeway mileage averaging 47 mpg; even at speeds over the posted 70 mph. There was also plenty of room to carry a lot of luggage."
Anonymous, AZ (2008 Toyota Prius)"Good acceleration and handling. Is a very quite car to drive."
DEE T., CA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Great acceleration. Good handling."
Anonymous, WA (2008 Toyota Prius)"I was able to disarm the traction control for my use on gravel roads. This improved my driving enjoyment, but though predictable, it handled too much like a station wagon (constant fish-tailing) and went through tires almost every oil change. I'm a rural mail carrier in NE Iowa. I use my 06 CRV full time now, even though the prius saved me 15-20 dollars a day on gas."
Anonymous, IA (2008 Toyota Prius)"Lethargic acceleration"
JOSE V., ON (2008 Toyota Prius)"It drives comfortably. It's a perfectly adequate car. It feels safe and handles predictably"
DAVID M., NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"When I go from a particular street to another, the ground must not be even and traction control or something kicks in - it feels like I'm loosing control of the car. It's scary. Took me years to get used to it. Happens at other times too."
ELIZABETH T., NC (2008 Toyota Prius)"QUIET at stops it's a zippy smallish yet roomy car. It is just reliable"
DIRK R., AZ (2008 Toyota Prius)"Because this is a hybrid vehicle, acceleration is a bit slow."
Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota Prius)"Very tight steering, good acceleration!"
ED H., MI (2008 Toyota Prius)"There is a little less acceleration than I would like for merging into fast traffic. It does not drive that well in the rain or snow. It feels "loose", like it won't hold the road if I go too fast."
Anonymous, NJ (2008 Toyota Prius)"The response times of the internal computers is pitiful. The driver has to be very, very, deliberate when selecting Reverse or Drive, or turning the system on or off."
DAVID A., TX (2008 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration: Car seems to strain driving up even low hills with AC on, so we usually turn it off until we reach the crest of the hill. Annoying!"
Anonymous, MD (2008 Toyota Prius)
"Seats sit high which is nice for a small car. Ride is relatively comfortable. Very good acceleration as well."
Thomas K., ME (2008 Toyota Prius)
