What Owners Say
"It has provided trouble-free transportation during the five years that I have owned it. It is economical to drive, gives good fuel economy. It is the second Prius that I have owned, and have no desire to own any other make of automobile."
DOROTHY W., NJ (2011 Toyota Prius)"I love that car has both POWER and ECO modes. When I need extra power, just push the button and away it goes!"
J H., NM (2011 Toyota Prius)"The car, being small and light-weight, can be a little jittery, as compared to our other car, a mini-van."
Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Prius)"good over all performance."
Anonymous, MO (2011 Toyota Prius)"Room, hatch back, acceleration, mileage Suspension too soft, I replaced shocks with KYB and handles better. Note: I was broadsided by a 60mph BMW series 7. $15,200 to repair prius. I was not injured! Still have the prius"
CARMEN G., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Gas millage! Higher then what is stated by Toyota. I now have 90,000 miles on my Prius and the millage has gotten even better. I do check the millage mechanically not using what the instrument panel says."
STAN K., NH (2011 Toyota Prius)"Our next Prius needs to have all wheel drive. I'll get something else if Prius doesn't have all wheel."
WILLIAM H., MN (2011 Toyota Prius)"Handles well and accelerates well"
PATRICK O., CO (2011 Toyota Prius)"Excellent in all areas."
JOHN R., OR (2011 Toyota Prius)"It has the rough ride of a compact car. I'm hoping new tires will make it better."
MARK D., NM (2011 Toyota Prius)"This model has a fairly high center of gravity, no visible front corners, and only modest acceleration - all of which add up to only a fair driving experience and a difficult parking experience."
BINYAMIN B., MD (2011 Toyota Prius)"The Prius has a great ride - very smooth. This is one of my favorite things about the Prius, and is why this is my third in a row."
DANIELLE W., ME (2011 Toyota Prius)"The option of "Econ" or "Power" makes a great difference in the confidence of the driver when entering expressways. It is a very valuable feature and one I enjoy! The gasoline MPG is fantastic and averages 50 mpg overall for the first 28k miles that I have driven this Prius!"
Anonymous, MN (2011 Toyota Prius)"When the gas pedal is pressed in normal or eco mode, the engine revs high before the car moves. When in power mode, the car's acceleration is much quicker with lower engine revs."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Excellent power when climbing hills in the mountains of Colorado."
JOSEPH V., CO (2011 Toyota Prius)"see prior explanation"
ZANE G., AZ (2011 Toyota Prius)"It is boring!"
Anonymous, MD (2011 Toyota Prius)"My wife is 5' 2' but has trouble seeing the fender-curb relationship. This is a trouble area in the Prius."
BERNARD T., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"The Prius just doesn't have the greatest acceleration and handling. It's just okay."
MICHAEL M., IA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration and handling is excellent."
HELEN G., SD (2011 Toyota Prius)"Jokes about acceleration must be made by Nascar drivers. I have found it perfectly suited accelerating from a standstill, matching speeds entering freeways, and overtaking. The CVT is exceptional, and one of my favorite features. Steering, especially on long trips, is excellent. Cruise control accurate, though I wish Toyota would make one that "remembers" where it was last set after a stop."
L K., NC (2011 Toyota Prius)"Lots of power here in the Rockies (7000'+) and handles well too."
RICHARD P., NM (2011 Toyota Prius)"Good acceleration, drives smooth"
BRIAN C., AZ (2011 Toyota Prius)"Having driven performance luxury cars most of my life I expected less from the Prius, but have been really surprised at its pep and power. If it were just a little prettier and a lot quieter I'd never consider a luxury car again."
ELAINE O., GA (2011 Toyota Prius)"I didn't expect the car to accelerate and handle so well. I really feel very well in control of the vehicle in all respects. I think it handles much better than almost any other car that I have driven."
PATRICIA J., IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"Seats lack support. Hard to find comfortable driving position"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Too many blind spots to the sides and rear."
Anonymous, MI (2011 Toyota Prius)"This car has no feedback at all. It's a horrible vehicle on curvy roads. I always pull over to let other vehicles pass when I drive the Prius in the curvy roads. It makes the Honda Civic seem like a sports car..."
YUVRAJ A., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"When avoiding an erratic driver or needing power entering a freeway on an on-ramp...push that little PWR button, the electric motor kicks the gas engine in the rear and you FLY. That's fun - particularly seeing the faces on other drivers when I assume the speed limit and they get to pass me, finally."
KEN M., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Good acceleration. This car has a special button to give extra power- I don't use it- enough get up abd go w/out it! I like passing BMWs on steep uphill S!"
JULI S., NV (2011 Toyota Prius)"brake pedal is too small"
V S., TN (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is very weak. It gets you there but it takes its time."
STEPHEN S., AZ (2011 Toyota Prius)"Before purchasing the Prius I was concerned that it might be annoyingly under powered. But to my surprise the acceleration, especially from a stand still, is quite lively...the benefits of high torque at zero rpm with an electric motor. The handling is more than adequate for every day driving. And the ride is very good even over bumpy surfaces."
DAVID M., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"In winter conditions (snow), the Prius is quite bad. I believe this is due to not enough weight on the front tires."
PAUL E., KY (2011 Toyota Prius)"Car was a realistic replacement for Toyota Sequoia at the time, but because the car is SO LOW to ground, I scrape and bang it on everything! next car will have more lift and slightly more space, such as small SUV."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"fantastic acceleration"
Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Prius)"Much more powerful and solid handling than I ever thought. There's some play in accelerator pedal that you easily get used to (and I hear has been adjusted/ fix in newer models)"
MICHAEL R., VT (2011 Toyota Prius)"Best front wheel drive in snow. The car can behave like a sports car if needed"
Anonymous, MA (2011 Toyota Prius)"does not quite have enough at times"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"The cornering is not as good as my previous Ca Mary's and there is frequent hydro planing at potholes or other depressions in the road."
Anonymous, CT (2011 Toyota Prius)"I only have ONE 2011 Prius. Poor - visibility due to windsheild frame design. Good - Steering - handles well in snow and on slippery pavement - fuel mileage."
E P., MT (2011 Toyota Prius)"wonderful car but very poor vision through back window"
DAVID C., GA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Rear vision is very bad. Needs rear camera."
ROBERT S., IA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Wife's Car. She likes it and you know, Happy Wife, Happy Life"
MITCH C., AZ (2011 Toyota Prius)"Very, very easy to drive, park in tight spaces. Also holds lots of groceries, suitcases, roomy."
Anonymous, PA (2011 Toyota Prius)"The acceleration is slow, but I love the CVT. It is very smooth. The handling is bad and the ground clearance is not good. It is less than other sedans and I have been scratched so many times."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"The vehicle is very noisy. Road noise is excessive."
MATTHEW W., VA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Actually my issue is the styling of the rear hatch. It is virtually impossible to clean/keep clean the window area just below the rear hatch; and in looking through the rear view mirror, that area provides very limited visibility.."
JAMES H., IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"Took awhile to get used to the acceleration in this car. When merging onto an expressway you must floor the gas pedal to get up to speed. Once I got used to this however, no problem."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Toyota Prius)"While applying the regenerative braking, if you hit a bump in the road, the brake 'releases' and you have to mash the pedal down to get braking power back. I'm guessing this is a protection mechanism for the regenerative brakes, and pushing the pedal down more applies the brake pads. It's very disconcerting the first couple of times you experience it"
MATTHEW D., TX (2011 Toyota Prius)"VERY poor traction in winter snowy, icy weather."
Anonymous, IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"Excellent handling and acelration"
Kenneth R., VA (2011 Toyota Prius)"When braking and turning a corner sometimes the car 'skips' - it looses traction and I feel as though I am no longer in control"
Anonymous, TN (2011 Toyota Prius)"For a small car it accelerates well and will handle well."
Allan G., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Handles well. Acceleration is good when put into the power mode."
Kenneth D., NJ (2011 Toyota Prius)"Hard to get good driving position. Seat has no lumbar support. Side mirror adjustment is a far reach"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Car accelerates very well, able to get to speed quickly"
Brian C., WA (2011 Toyota Prius)"The Prius acceleration is leisurely and hard acceleration can be quite noisy. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) allows the engine to run at high revs before the car actually speeds up (we run the car in Eco mode to get better gas mileage). Handling is good with little lean, but not great."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Awful slow acceleration in normal mode. Better acceleration in power mode but then your mileage is no better than a regular car."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"acceleration is slow and handling isn't the best but I bought it for the gas mileage."
Frank C., NC (2011 Toyota Prius)"A little under powered."
Dale S., WV (2011 Toyota Prius)"The blind spot in the rear left quarter is terrible. I had parking assist installed as an after-market accessory and it helps mitigate this problem a little. Have also gotten used to using my side mirror more effectively."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Well, I get the acceleration I need but this is not a standout feature. Handling is good. But, the linings in the tire wells have all fallen out or come loose in the course of regular driving!"
Anonymous, AL (2011 Toyota Prius)"The car is just too low to the ground. I would never get it again (if I have the choice) because it scrapes on absolutely everything."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Pickup is decent, and the car is quite good in most months of the year. It's something of an adventure in snow, due to its light weight and lack of all-wheel drive."
Martin L., MA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Surprising smooth with good acceleration."
Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Prius)"excellent handling, decent acceleration"
Thomas A., NY (2011 Toyota Prius)"Poor acceleration! Once we actually beat a blind nun in a wheelchair across an intersection from a standing start."
Anonymous, ON (2011 Toyota Prius)"Power mode provides a good boost when passing."
David J., NY (2011 Toyota Prius)"The car handles all road conditions well. I am happy with its handling on snowy road conditions especially, with appropriate snow tires. It has good acceleration. My biggest complaint is that I needed to replace the motor two years ago due to a valve problem. (after owning it four years)"
Anonymous, VT (2011 Toyota Prius)"The acceleration is slow, but reliably so."
Anonymous, WA (2011 Toyota Prius)"It is not a fast accelerater but then it was never advertised to be fast. It handles okay in most situations."
Gerald B., OH (2011 Toyota Prius)"Using the 'power' button it will take off, almost, like a sports car. However, what I really like is how it takes corners and curves, and hugs to the road. The heavy battery seems to hold it down and keep it in place. Really love that. :)"
Jerry S., CO (2011 Toyota Prius)"We were prepared to "accept" the Prius as a small and functional vehicle with efficiency being our primary focus. Over the 160k+ miles driven so far, we are amazed with the comfort and drivability. I don't have any hesitation to drive the Prius on long trips."
Adam-Karen C., TX (2011 Toyota Prius)"Great turning radius, perfect for parellel parking or getting out of tight spaces. Acceleration is excellent for merging onto highways."
Brigid H., OH (2011 Toyota Prius)"Handling is responsive, but sluggish. Acceleration leaves a lot to be desired, like actually accelerating when you push the pedal. There’s a significant waiting period before the car responds. You have to really know the car’s quirks or it could be dangerous."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Excellent acceleration and handling"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"I installed a Toyota Racing Development (Toyota-made) antisway bar in the rear; I installed an AutoMeter 0-6000 small tachometer on the dash; & I purchased Michelin Energy A/S tires, all to make it more fun and to make sure I knew what the engine was doing (RPMs). I recommend these additions. I don't care about the acceleration, which is satisfactory: I want good, flat handling, and driver involvement. I wrote to Toyota o tell them they should put a tachometer in every vehicle they make, including hybrids."
Anonymous, IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"Very poor traction, especially in wet or mud or snow. I got the best traction aftermarket tires I could find using CR advice. Hard acceleration (and it is pretty weak) from a stop regularly spins the wheels, making it hard to enter a highway from a stop. The brakes let go when encountering a bump or pothole, which is scary when you are on a turn."
Isaiah L., NJ (2011 Toyota Prius)"GOOD: Power Mode provides a much needed faux-turbo response compared to earlier models. Crucial for getting onto highways with short merge lanes. Eco Mode provides the typical Prius driving experience, which feels somewhat like a giant golf cart, though it's absolutely fine once you get used to it. BAD: Braking is sometimes scary, as ABS prevents actual stopping when braking on bumpy or otherwise non-grippy terrain."
Anonymous, MA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Responsive"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration and handling is more than adequate The braking and regeneration of the hybrid battery is exceptional."
Garry K., ME (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration not impressive."
Anonymous, CT (2011 Toyota Prius)"It is ABSOLUTELY RELIABLE. Admittedly I have just about 32000 on this 7 year old car but it's fun to drive, great sound system, have had a few oil changes - maybe five. I seldom have a passenger and don't believe I've ever had four people in the car.The only ting wrong is the navigation/radio screen...the left half is UNUSABLE. It's dead. That's with the pre-selected radio stations and even the map - it cannot be increased or decreased in size."
Ken M., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"It handles great and has very good acceleration than I expected for a hybrid"
Floyd C., IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"Prius easy to drive."
Anonymous, SC (2011 Toyota Prius)"For a small engine it accelerates quite well although a little more get up and go in close situations would be nice. I would give up alttle mileage for more power."
Anonymous, IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"It drives and handles easily acceleration is fine"
Anonymous, NY (2011 Toyota Prius)"Steering is excellent, cornering quite good, ride comfortable, acceleration quite adequate for entering a freeway but could use more when overtaking at speed."
L K., NC (2011 Toyota Prius)"Handles well in traffic and parking."
Anonymous, GA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Adequate acceleration, so-so handling which can be improved with better tire selection."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Good low end torque to get on freeway"
Ivan B., CO (2011 Toyota Prius)"its always equal to the task"
Richard W., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"slow acceleration resonable handling HUGE BLIND SPOTS"
Brian L., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"It works efficiently and dependably"
Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota Prius)"fuel economy"
Gregory M., GA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Since its a hybrid, acceleration is very poor and sluggish. Handling is fine. Wish acceleration was better."
Anonymous, MD (2011 Toyota Prius)"The Prius accelerates without feeling like it is struggling, even when ascending hills. Handling is effortless and the seats are comfortable especially when maneuvering in tight turns."
Dale D., AZ (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is somewhat slow but normal for a hybrid. Handling is fairly responsive."
Tonya M., TN (2011 Toyota Prius)"EASY HANDLING in both"
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"The power mode has the extra acceleration needed in highway driving."
Anonymous, ME (2011 Toyota Prius)"The Prius handles any task I put before it--whether merging into heavy highway traffic, driving through snow on a gravel road, or managing bumpy unpaved roads through woods. Especially with the "power" button, I can get fast acceleration when I need it; the rest of the time, I keep it in "eco" mode. It handles mountain curves comfortably and responds well if I have to stop fast or speed up suddenly. I love the Prius!"
April C., SC (2011 Toyota Prius)"Visibility out the back is difficult"
Anonymous, LA (2011 Toyota Prius)"The JBL audio system is amazing!! It's a boring little car but we don't care...we save lots of money!"
Carlos E., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"For a 4 cylinder the acceleration is very sufficient. The ride is not that bad and all the controls are easy to get to and understand."
Anonymous, SC (2011 Toyota Prius)"For an economical small engine vehicle the accelerator response is impressive...and I prefer a car in which I can see all four corners, which makes handling easier."
Anonymous, IN (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is very good. Handles high speeds well. Stops quickly and smoothly, turns on a dime, handles well in curves."
Carol W., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"The handling and acceleration have exceeded my expectation, especially in highway driving. I seldom need the Power mode, but when I do, it is amazing how much oomph this little car has. As for the handling, I have successfully maneuvered in emergency situations at Interstate speeds to avoid accidents without sacrificing control. It's nimble, when on wet roads."
Anonymous, FL (2011 Toyota Prius)"Very reliable, but clunky with respect to acceleration. Handling seems okay."
Anonymous, SC (2011 Toyota Prius)"surprisingly good acceleration and cornering, much better than you would expect from a hybrid"
Anonymous, GA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Control is VERY good. On "Eco" setting the acceleration is weak. If I were going to change anything, I'd have flooring the pedal immediately override the Eco setting. I've felt that I needed that only rarely, but it would have been nice to have it."
James O., IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"Can't see out of back and side windows very good."
Douglas N., WY (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is quite good (in the power mode) and very responsive. It takes corners like a pro (likely due to the heavy battery and low height). The Prius drive seems quite unique and very satisfying."
Jerry S., CO (2011 Toyota Prius)"The Prius gets great gas mileage, has good power, and handles well. It is noisy though."
Gerald S., TX (2011 Toyota Prius)"love the way it drives and handles. it is a peppy car and accelerates well even going up hill."
Whitney S., NV (2011 Toyota Prius)"In Power mode, the Prius has fairly quick acceleration. When in Economy mode, the Prius accelerates much more leisurely, with the benefit of improved gas mileage. Handling on smooth roads is okay, but not great. The suspension supports the heavy hybrid battery, so the ride is harsher than it might otherwise be for a non-hybrid version."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Lots of acceleration with the Hybrid engine."
Anonymous, MN (2011 Toyota Prius)"Excellent acceleration and performance. Amazing Hybrid technology. No other Hybrid comes close."
Anonymous, NC (2011 Toyota Prius)"It generally runs well in town, but needs a little more acceleration power on freeways."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is somewhat sluggish, but is to be expected of a hybrid vehicle. Handling is good due to its size."
Anonymous, GA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Very simple to operate, sufficient power for almost all driving conditions. Some problem on snow and ice."
Anonymous, MA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Has plenty of power when I need it."
Richard P., NM (2011 Toyota Prius)"One needs to give themselves time to adjust to driving a Prius. This is NOT a bad thing, just that it changes the way you need to accelerate and handle driving. Really easy, once you focus on no using a heavy foot on the accelerator."
Anonymous, NY (2011 Toyota Prius)"Acceleration is adequate; handling is adequate, but that is because Prius owners accept Prius' less-than-crisp control. My main concern re: this automobile that I actually am very found of and will gladly buy again, is the lack of lower back support in either front seat. This is a flaw in all Prius of the 2010 through 2016 models and the fact that the problem was allowed to persist over a 6-year model run is unacceptable."
Rob-Gail R., MI (2011 Toyota Prius)"Sweet design..lowest drag coefficient ever. That battery placed low in the design allows sports car handling around curves; serious "stick" to the road. All that, and fabulous mileage on top."
Glen P., TX (2011 Toyota Prius)"I am a slow and cautious driver and the Prius meets my need as far as acceleration and handling."
Stedman P., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"handles well for a small hybrid which is years old."
Anonymous, CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"It accelerates surprisingly well and handles great."
Kay B., PA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Handling is good, cruises nicely at 75 with 50+ mpg in summer. What I like most is ergonomics. Everything feels like it's in exactly in the right place (I'm 6 feet, 200 pounds)."
Anonymous, VA (2011 Toyota Prius)"acceleration is very good in all modes you can select. Handling is also very good. Gas mileage is excellent especially when you coast and anticpate your stops., and do not accelerate fast needlessly."
Kenneth G., IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"and it handles very well and has acceleration when needed.."
Ron V., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"For the incredible mileage obtained, the acceleration and handling are MORE than adequate!"
Jan W., MI (2011 Toyota Prius)"The Toyota Prius has a responsive acceleration and an easy, steady handling that provides an enjoyable driving experience."
Alberto M., CA (2011 Toyota Prius)"Handles pretty well. A little slow when merging into traffic."
David C., NY (2011 Toyota Prius)"With electric power added to the gasoline engine, acceleration is very good, and car handles curves and other situations well also."
Anonymous, IL (2011 Toyota Prius)"Surprisingly good acceleration for a small hybrid engine car."
Anonymous, MI (2011 Toyota Prius)
"Wonderful to find parking spaces and maneuver in tight spaces. Somewhat difficult to see back."
Anonymous, KS (2011 Toyota Prius)
