The regular Toyota Prius is the most efficient car you can buy that doesn't have to be plugged into an electrical outlet. It gets an impressive 44 mpg overall in our testing--with plenty of room for five, a big flexible hatchback, a comfortable ride, and very secure handling. If there's a knock on the Prius, it isn't engaging to drive, feels underpowered and is loud when you ask for max power.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Getting the Prius Plug-in version includes a bigger battery that can be charged from any wall outlet, allowing the car to drive more on electricity and less on gas. A full charge gives an electric range of about 12 miles. While the battery was charged, we measured 67 mpg overall in combined city and highway driving.

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

“Music played through Bluetooth connection randomly stops playing. Car has to be restarted to reestablish connection. Toyota has been made aware of problem but provided no solution”

Anonymous, WI (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

“Installed 2012 gps database vice 2013. Request 4 fix 2 dealer(s), purch agent (AAA) and Toyota Customer Experience resulted in inappropriate anger to us fm all . 2 dealers: "Toyota very angry with you"”

John M., CO (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

“Doesn't respond very well to spoken commands even when the exact language demanded in the manual is used”

J K., MI (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

“It didn't work when purchased. Had to wait several months for them to install a replacement. Don't like it much anyway. Hand held version is better”

Cameron O., AB (2015 Toyota Prius Unsure Hybrid)

“Hard to read street names on map and too many steps to input information and POI”

Anonymous, OH (2015 Toyota Prius Persona Series Hybrid)

“Gets confused on parallel roads, directing me on one while I'm on the other. Gives audible turn commands too late. I'm often in the middle of an intersection when it says to turn. Have to turn around and come back. Looking at the display would help, but it's distracting and dangerous. Dealership says they upgraded the system, but it did not solve the problem”

Anonymous, MA (2015 Toyota Prius Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

“Car started dropping Bluetooth connections, including while in the middle of a call. Toyota has no remedy for problem. That a safety-related feature (hands-free calling) stopped working and they don't seem to care is immensely frustrating”

Anonymous, WI (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

“It says it connects to our phones, but it doesn't accept phone calls or text messages. We need to take it in. Yet, we have not”

Nancy B., IN (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

“The car refused to remember phone pairing. The dealer said a $1000 part needed to be replaced”

Rick H., MD (2015 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

“last several months can't get bluetooth to operate. Sparks can't fix it-says its entune not catching up with Samsung phone updates”

Kathleen R., SC (2015 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

“Cannot get phone calls out. It does not al Ways understand the names I ask for. I find myself yelling at it because it infuriates me”

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Backup or other camera/sensors

“Cannot see any picture because of outside lighting. I had the same problem and complaints Bout the previous Camry I leased. They need to place it differently. It can be very dangerous”

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Unsure 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Display screen goes blank

“The in-dash radio/CD/bluetooth/backup camera wouldn't work. Toyota replaced it with an upgrade, no charge, even though it was just out of warranty”

Anonymous, WA (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

“Dash board rattles”

Anonymous, CT (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
