Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The regular Toyota Prius is the most efficient car you can buy that doesn't have to be plugged into an electrical outlet. It gets an impressive 44 mpg overall in our testing--with plenty of room for five, a big flexible hatchback, a comfortable ride, and very secure handling. If there's a knock on the Prius, it isn't engaging to drive, feels underpowered and is loud when you ask for max power.

Getting the Prius Plug-in version includes a bigger battery that can be charged from any wall outlet, allowing the car to drive more on electricity and less on gas. A full charge gives an electric range of about 12 miles. While the battery was charged, we measured 67 mpg overall in combined city and highway driving.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Toyota Prius owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Cannot see any picture because of outside lighting. I had the same problem and complaints Bout the previous Camry I leased. They need to place it differently. It can be very dangerous"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Display screen goes blank

"The in-dash radio/CD/bluetooth/backup camera wouldn't work. Toyota replaced it with an upgrade, no charge, even though it was just out of warranty"

H M., GA (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Screen died three months out of waranty. Toyota reduced cost of replacement from $1,000 to $380."

Anonymous, TN (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The in-dash navigation system was working just fine the first three years since purchase. But then one day, the screen failed to display anything upon engine startup. When pressing any button, the display would simply respond with system not installed. This issue even affected the rear-view backup camera; when placing the car in reverse, the screen failed to display the rear-view."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Persona Series 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Found out after purchasing (stupidly) that the Entune system doesn't work well with iPhones, so am unable to use. Instead, I use Bluetooth, so pretty bland controls. There is no voice controlled texting, or anything, so I have to use my phone. Also, the screen is angled just right for the sun to shine on it, so half the time can't see it. I have huge buyer's remorse and may sell the car soon."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Music played through Bluetooth connection randomly stops playing. Car has to be restarted to reestablish connection. Toyota has been made aware of problem but provided no solution"

Anonymous, WI (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

"The design of the interface is very cumbersome and not very logical. Audio system uses too many touch pad features - with buttons the driver can feel where to press, but with touch pad has to look to see where to press. The steps that need to be taken to sync a device are not easy to deduce."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Gets confused on parallel roads, directing me on one while I'm on the other. Gives audible turn commands too late. I'm often in the middle of an intersection when it says to turn. Have to turn around and come back. Looking at the display would help, but it's distracting and dangerous. Dealership says they upgraded the system, but it did not solve the problem"

Anonymous, MA (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"They are all a problem due to the poor design of the entertainment and navigation systems. The navigation system is an extremely poor design. I will not use it. I complained about it. Basically it doesn't work unless you enter the zip code of the location you are looking for. that issue renders the navigation system totally useless in my opinion."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"It's Sirius-XM. No longer gives traffic conditions. A bit flaky on practical directions."

Spencer K., CO (2015 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Installed 2012 gps database vice 2013. Request 4 fix 2 dealer(s), purch agent (AAA) and Toyota Customer Experience resulted in inappropriate anger to us fm all . 2 dealers: "Toyota very angry with you""

John M., CO (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

"Doesn't respond very well to spoken commands even when the exact language demanded in the manual is used"

J K., MI (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

"It didn't work when purchased. Had to wait several months for them to install a replacement. Don't like it much anyway. Hand held version is better"

Cameron O., AB (2015 Toyota Prius Hybrid)

"Hard to read street names on map and too many steps to input information and POI"

Anonymous, OH (2015 Toyota Prius Persona Series Hybrid)

"Dealer and Toyota USA supplied a circa 2011 gps map database in my 2015 Prius3 They angrily refused any update. I purchased an update and the Toyota rep refused to allow local dealers (3) to install. I complained to BBB and two dealers advised me that Toyota was extremely angry with me. Thus they could not update gps They invented multiple reasons to not install the purchased update. Am out $150 as VIN was blocked in their system to not repair. I consider the old database a safety issue. We use Google maps and Garmin to navigate."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"It says it connects to our phones, but it doesn't accept phone calls or text messages. We need to take it in. Yet, we have not"

Nancy B., IN (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The car refused to remember phone pairing. The dealer said a $1000 part needed to be replaced"

Rick H., MD (2015 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"last several months can't get bluetooth to operate. Sparks can't fix it-says its entune not catching up with Samsung phone updates"

Kathleen R., SC (2015 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"When paired with cell phone, only one call can be made or received. I have a flip phone which paired just fine with my 2005 Prius."

Anonymous, (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"sometimes the pairing works and sometimes it doesn't. what else is there to say - again poor design of the entire infotainment and navigation system."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Car started dropping Bluetooth connections, including while in the middle of a call. Toyota has no remedy for problem. That a safety-related feature (hands-free calling) stopped working and they don't seem to care is immensely frustrating"

Anonymous, WI (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

"Bluetooth turns off by itself and there's no way you can turn it back on. Hands free phone not possible if bluetooth is Off. Toyota should recall prius and fix this bluetooth issue."

Ronald B., CA (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Radio

"volume on radio varies greatly from station to station"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Volume knob does not reliably adjust sound level. Never has worked right."

Carole B., AZ (2015 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Unable to control volume. WORST RADIO we have ever had in a car!!"

Carole B., AZ (2015 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Speakers

"The noise gets off sometimes. Especially with heavy bass music."

Maxim M., GA (2015 Toyota Prius)
Voice control commands

"Cannot get phone calls out. It does not al Ways understand the names I ask for. I find myself yelling at it because it infuriates me"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"A spider blocked the run-off from the air conditioner and my floor was flooded with water. They removed the blockage, pulled up the carpet and attempted to dry everything out. They did want a ridiculous amount of money to complete the job (they were worried about mold) and we declined. No problems since."

Jean W., MD (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Squeaks or rattles

"There is a rattle in the dash. Dealer has addressed some of it. There seems to be another. Worse in the cold. Vey dissapointing"

Anonymous, IA (2015 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The Prius is not "tight" and "rattles" over even slight bumps"

David C., FL (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Small rattlr under carriage whenever hit bump or pot hole"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Plug-in 1.8-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid )

"This is my fourth Prius. In each case rattles have begun to occur about 5-6 months into my ownership. More work needs to be done on "fit and finish""

Anonymous, WA (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"There is a door on the passenger side that has come loose and rattles much of the time. I have pointed it out to the dealer buy other than taping it, which hasn't helped, that all they have done to repair it"

Anonymous, NE (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Dash board rattles"

Anonymous, CT (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"My Prius makes some rattling noises when I drive and I don't think a 2 year old $30,500. car should make any noises"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Rattle seems to be coming from ductwork behind dashboard"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"dealer has eliminated some but not all"

John M., CA (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I feel that the body fit and trim on this car is not as tight as our older Prius. When we take the 2015 to the car wash there is often soap inside areas that I would not expect."

Anonymous, ME (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"When backing up brakes make loud squeaking noises"

Gerald S., PA (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The general body noises during operation are annoying and persistent. Dash, glovebox, engine...all rattle."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"On any rough road surface, the car rattles like an old truck. Dealer says there is no fix."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Dash Rattle"

Anonymous, OH (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"As with many cars you hear a lot of road noise inside the cabin."

Anonymous, ME (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Part of the heating/AC system is lose under the dash on the passenger side. The dealer doesn't seem to know how to deal with this and nothing really gets done except some tape."

Anonymous, NE (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Worse in winter cold"

Anonymous, MN (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Wind noise

"I experience more road noise (tires on road?) than earlier vehicles. I believe more can be done to insulate the interior from this noise. Competitor vehicles i have ridden in are quieter"

Anonymous, WA (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"i think the back window is open so much noise"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"While using the front 12v outlet to run a tire inflator (compressor) the outlet stopped working. The rear one still work. I have not gotten this repaired. Also the passenger side rear window will not close from the driver's control. It does open but will not close"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Dose not charge my phone"

Toya F., IL (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Anonymous, MO (2015 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"During the last scheduled service they found 3 exterior lights out."

Richard S., WA (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Headlights

"Headlights are exceptionally dim unless high beams are used. The contrast between my wife's Acura and the Prius is remarkable in terms of how well the headlights work. Seems this was one of the cares where they decided to go cheap"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Persona Series 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Both headlights went out several months apart."

Kim P., CA (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The headlights were not working at night nn the normal setting-- I could use parking or brights, but not regular headlights. I brought it to my mechanic and they had to be replaced."

"Right low beam went out."

Richard S., WA (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The low tire warning comes on intermittently."

Anonymous, OR (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Wiper motor or washer

"The pre-owned Prius went through an exhaustive checklist before delivery. On arrival home, I discovered that windshield washer tank was empty. I refilled it but didn't try the system. I later discovered a leak in the system's hose that rendered it inoperable (and drained the tank). I first discovered this on a snowy muddy day on a 700 mile trip on throughways. The trip was made miserable by lack of a window washing system. Car was otherwise operable. System was later fixed by original dealer at no cost to me."

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Rear bumper popped out, dealership put it back on correctly"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Right front wheel trim liner fell out. Repair shop told us it is a common problem with the Prius because Toyota is using cheap plastic clips."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I’ve had two pieces fall off due to driving over protruding tree stump when i had to move off road quickly to avoid accident. To replace these pieces is a cost of over $2000 If the wheel base of the car could be raised a few inches this would not have been an issue and would also help from scraping the front bump when entering or exiting business driveways."

Teresa C., GA (2015 Toyota Prius Persona Series 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"One end of a simulated chrome door trim strip partially separated from the body. I made the problem known to my dealer, whose body shop quickly corrected the problem to my satisfaction."

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

Anonymous, VT (2015 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Normal routine brake wear

"The dealership was sneaky. The routine vehicle inspection they said that all the brakes were going and recommended fixing. I asked them to fix the worst (either front or back). Over $400 later, brakes were fixed, and then I realized that actually I would have felt a vibration and would have had symptoms if they really need them. Next inspection they never even mentioned the remaining brakes that weren't done... Dealership sucks."

Anonymous, NS (2015 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Premature brake wear

"My original 2005 Toyota Prius went 190,000 KM before its first brake replacement. I would expect a Hybrid to do a lot more than the current mileage on these vehicles."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Toyota Prius Five 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Regular brake failure

"Twice in the past year I applied the brakes and the car accelerated. This time I called Toyota and they say they will send someone to check the car. the first time I just ran into some bushes (last fall), but this time I hit another car in a parking lot (last week)."

Fuel cap

"Three times in the past year the fuel cap leaked. Each time it cost about $125 to get the codes reset. Toyota says it isn't convered. I say it is a design defect. We have had 8 other Priuses and this has never been a problem with any ot the others. I don't like taking it to a dealer to get the codes cleared bu tI don't think I should pay for it."
