Toyota RAV4 2001 4-door SUV
Trim Shown: Sport Utility
The RAV4 has been redesigned for 2001, and is now our top-rated small SUV. This new version comes only as a four-door and is a little roomier, but it retains its youthful styling. The flexible interior includes a rear seat that lets you fold and remove each half. Theres still no six-cylinder engine. But the 2.0-liter Four has picked up variable-valve timing and a much-needed 20-hp boost to 148 hp, and it provides adequate performance. The engine and automatic transmission also work well together, and the all-wheel-drive system does its job efficiently and unobtrusively. Access and loading are very easy. Nimble handling, excellent brakes, and good fuel economy round out this high-rated vehicle.

Safety Equipment

ABS available; standard from 2004. ESC standard from 2004. Side and head protection air bags available from 2004, standard from 2007.

Road Test

The RAV4 is cleverly designed and fun to drive. Though the engine is a little noisy at times, it works well with the transmission and provides good fuel economy for an SUV.
