Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

The redesigned Atlas Cross Sport continues the original's path with evolutionary updates. It is the same size as before, and is distinguished as a coupe-inspired alternative to boxy two-row SUVs. It again employs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with power increasing from 269 hp to 282 hp, matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front- and all-wheel-drive configurations will be offered. The interior features a digital instrument panel, a large center screen (up to 15 inches), and abundant ways to keep smartphones charged. New standard features include a power liftgate with hands-free operation, rear sunshades, a dimming driver-side mirror, and front and rear parking collision warning. The Atlas Cross Sport gains a front-center airbag, bringing the total to seven standard airbags.

The new for 2020 Cross Sport is VW’s edgier take on the Atlas three-row SUV. The five-passenger Cross Sport shares its underpinnings and engine choices with the larger three-row Atlas, but it loses the third row and some cargo space. Handling is nimbler than one would expect from such a large vehicle. The ride has an underlying firmness but absorbs bumps decently. The seats are comfortable and the controls are easy to use. The base 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder is quite responsive and capable of moving the Cross Sport adequately, and there is also a more powerful 3.6-liter V6. The turbo four-cylinder engine gets slightly better fuel economy. Both front- and all-wheel drive are offered. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind spot warning are standard.
