What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Dealer over charged ac and destroyed the while system."

Anonymous, (2013 Volkswagen Jetta SE 2.5-L 5 Cyl)

"The a/c system stopped properly regulating cold air and produced it intermittently when demanded. The problem began at under 20000 miles. The dealer was notified and made efforts to address the problem but since it seemed to be a seasonal problem and each Troubleshooting cycle took weeks the problem was never fixed to my satisfaction. At 100k miles the decision was finally made to replace the compressor. Cost was shared on an aftermarket compressor which seems to be fine so far."

Anonymous, NH (2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

"The clutch between the hybrid electic motor and the engine used for starting the engine was slipping and needed to be replaced. VW paid for 75% of the cost; but still maintains was not in the hybird electrical system warranty."

Anonymous, KS (2013 Volkswagen Jetta)

"Manual transmission clutch assembly failed due to design defects and had to be replaced with an upgraded clutch assembly Part Number with revised design. Issue was not due to clutch wear as corroborated by the dealership. Car was under powertrain warranty at the time, but Volkswagen refused to honor the warranty and forced out of pocket payment. Had to file a complaint and threat of legal action with the Michigan Attorney General and the Secretary of State, which prompted VW to reconsider and"

"Hybrid transmission failed. The car initially would go into limp mode on occasion when switching from electric motor to gas engine. then it finally began lose power at freeway speeds nearly causing an accident. no local mechanic would touch it the dealship wanted $7,000 to repair. So I traded it in and took a $5,000 loss. Then car had less than 100,000 miles on it."

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"At about 50,000 miles, the ABS controller had to be replaced. The car's ABS, tire inflation, and brake system warning lights were illuminated and a trustworthy dealer replaced the unit at the cost of approximately $1500. There is no good reason for this to fail so early. The tire inflation indicator also seems to be overly sensitive or mal-programmed, illuminating after hitting bumps in the road although tire pressure is retained."

Benjamin S., CA (2013 Volkswagen Jetta S 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Master cylinder

"Same thing that I answered before. BUT this one came from Boast VW , Bradenting, Fl. They said that breaks were OK"

Anonymous, KY (2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Steven S., MA (2013 Volkswagen Jetta SEL 2.5-L 5 Cyl)
Shocks or struts

"120000 km front spring broke and replaced the whole front suspension. previously owned jetta had the same issue and replaced the front springs 2x."

"Alignment was off so much that I burned through a set of tires in 2 years. Dealer maintained the whole time, they never noticed / did anything about it."

Anonymous, NS (2013 Volkswagen Jetta Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"There was carbon buildup on the valves, which caused some of the spark plugs and coils to fail. The dealer had to pull the head and valves, clean the valves and replace the spark plugs and coils. I was told this is a common problem."

Bryan R., NY (2013 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"These Direct inject engines are well known for having carbon buildup on intake valves. 71000 miles into owning, I get an ECM light and nearly completely loose power on I-5. Compute puts me into limp mode and I wait 2 hours on a Sunday night for a tow. The entire intake needs to be removed and the carbon needs to be scraped off. Car was in the shop for 3 days (during which they found a transmission oil leak) and ended up being pricey"

Dustin C., WA (2013 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Metal piece inside top part of engine (where you pour oil in) broke loose, damaged valvetrain, VW replaced valves and a lot of other parts in the top part of the engine. Happened at 35k mi"

Jameson S., CA (2013 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"In August 2018 the vehicle's engine gave out without warning. The only option is to get a new engine or have the current engine rebuilt."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid 1.4-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Timing belt or chain

"Had engine noise. Dealer replaced timing chain."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Difficult to fill up gas tank

"began to trip the fuel vapor recovery at gas stations. Anywhere I attempted to fuel up the pump would stop after only getting a gallon or two in. A local mecahnic was finally able to replace a part to fix the problem after many trouble shooting at various places."

Paul A., CA (2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid 1.4-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Engine computer

"My daughter experienced both engine shut-down and excessive acceleration in dangerous situations -- on the freeway for the first, on busy city streets for the latter. It appears to be an engine computer problem but, even though supposedly fixed twice with new components, it is recurring now."

Benjamin S., CA (2013 Volkswagen Jetta S 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Oil leaks

"Since having the timing belt replaced under a recall, the vehicle loses approximately 1qt of oil every 1-2 months. Have taken the car in to be serviced & found a pinched head gasket that occurred during timing belt replacement. However, that has not entirely corrected the issue. There is no dripping oil that I can detect (no oil stains left on the driveway.)"

Anonymous, NC (2013 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The oil filter housing is made of plastic. The design is solid but the filter housing needs to be made more durable, probably of metal"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Volkswagen Jetta SE 2.5-L 5 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Electronic ignition

"The key did not connect with the automatic engine start like it did not recognize it"

Anonymous, AR (2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid 1.4-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Hybrid/electric system and battery (excluding replacement)

"Warranty replacement of Mechatronic unit (Volkswagen's term). Symptoms affected engine (ran rough) and hybrid system (at times woulld only use gas engine or only use electric motor)"

Andrew M., MN (2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid 1.4-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Spark plugs or wires failure

"Engine mis-fire on cylinder 2. Mechanic replaced spark plug at 55,000 miles. These parts typically do not go bad so soon."

Michael W., PA (2013 Volkswagen Jetta S 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Starter

"This car had the diesel EPA cheat, that was replaced but led to water freezing into the Turbo intake inlet. This water freezing led to high strain on the starter that burnt the starter out. This happened twice. I paid for the starters. Water pipe freezing was a warranty repair. Still mad it was not fixed under warranty the first time. I also paid for the rental as the dealership could not get to my car for over 3 weeks on the second freezing issue. I had to rent/borrow drives for 2 weeks on the first freezing."

Anonymous, NS (2013 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 2.0-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

"The clutch-pack in the Jetta Hybrid automatic transmission started to shift roughly at about 65,000 miles. It was replaced at about 70,000 miles under the extended warranty we had purchased with the car. Now, around 90,000 miles the replacement clutch-pack is showing early signs of rough shifting as well"

Transmission leaks

"The o-ring seal on the filter housing was not replaced with the gear oil and was damaged when reinstalled. This caused the transmission to pump oil out the filter housing and 30,000 miles later the dealership noted removing 4 liters of oil and adding 5 liters new. No metal scraps were found in the old oil so gear damage is unlikely. (the shop that did the 40k transmission service was not a dealership but claimed factory trained technicians and is now bankrupt) use a trusted shop"

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Exhaust leaks

"Shortly after purchasing the vehicle exhaust smells were detected in the passenger compartment. The dealer was unable to locate the source of the smells. Two years later the dealer finally located the source of the smell--a failed gasket between the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter. Since the smell had been documented during the warranty period of the vehicle it was fully covered"
