Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. "transmission blew and had to be replaced took over 5 weeks to get it repaired due to parts backordered"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid 1.4-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Transmission began pushing hard approaching a stop. Instead of P, N, D on the console it had a small flashing wrench. Several times would not go into gear; could not use the Eco Mode (electric motor assist). Dealership A told me it required a complete replacement/not repairable, also my warranty didn't cover the entire cost because it was more than the KBB value. Dealership B replaced it for free by correctly noting the type of problem with the manufacturer's warranty coverage department."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"At 56000 miles sudden engine problems and had to be towed to VW dealer. Took 10 days or more for dealer to guess problem then due to warranty, 20 more days of dealer supposedly jumping thru hoops for VW. Finally determined timing chain tensioner problem caused engine to be ruined, chunk so of metal in motor. Then waited for new engine on install. Car off road 6 weeks, then to follow up issues to to install."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Volkswagen Jetta SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sudden engine noise at 56,234 miles. Towed to VW dealer. Problem with the 1.8 turbo motor. Perhaps timing chain tensioner. found numerous metal parts in oil pan. Took 2 weeks of diagnosis by dealer before VW would cover new engine (long block) under warranty. Then also needed to replace fuel injector. Now new engine only under warranty for 12 months/12,000 miles. Had to rent car for 36 days, none offered by dealer. After appeal to VW, they paid half. Very likely ends my VW experience. Horrible service from VW and the dealer. 2 other cars with same engine and similar problems also at dealer with only 2 certified VW mechanics."

Marc Y., NY (2014 Volkswagen Jetta SE 1.8-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Timing belt or chain

"The timing belt failed, which caused major engine failure. It is under warranty so the dealer is now replacing the chain, head, etc. Shocking to have this happen in a car with only 32,000 miles."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Volkswagen Jetta)

"We had an extended Warranty and the dealer tried to say the timing chain was not covered. after weeks of back and forth with the dealer and VW CAnada all repairs where covered but we did not get a loaner car."
