Consumer Reports, the nonprofit research, testing, and advocacy organization, today announced Phil Radford as its next President and CEO. Radford previously served as Chief Strategy Officer at Sierra Club and will assume his new role at the beginning of February.
Radford’s experience leading membership organizations, growing revenue models and tackling consumer issues will ensure CR has the leadership it needs to build on its reputation of improving people’s lives.
“Phil is the best leader to guide this iconic organization into the future,” said CR’s interim Board Chair Sonal Shah. “He has built a career focused on transformational campaigns, entrepreneurial thinking, integrated marketing, and modernizing to meet the needs of people today. He’s also experienced in creating change, whether through lifting up the voices of communities, working with leaders across the political spectrum, or engaging the heads of major companies.”
Radford started his career working on consumer and environmental issues with the nonpartisan Public Interest Research Group and on global trade rules with Public Citizen.
“It’s an honor to lead an organization with such an incredible legacy and trusted reputation,” said Radford. “CR is committed to creating a fairer, more transparent marketplace, making people healthier, wealthier, and safer. There aren’t many more important things you can devote your life to.”
At the Sierra Club, Radford guided and modernized the renowned nonprofit through organizational strategy, major gifts, integrated marketing and policy campaigns. He also served as CEO of Greenpeace, the youngest executive ever to lead the organization, where he partnered with over 100 corporations to change their environmental practices. He has held a number of other leadership roles, including co-founder of the Democracy Initiative, founder and president of Progressive Multiplier, and founder and executive director of Power Shift.
“When CR sounds the alarm, people listen, from the halls of Congress to the living rooms of America,” Radford continued. “As someone committed to working on consumer issues, I’ve seen the impact CR has on families across the country, including mine.”
Radford succeeds Marta L. Tellado, who is stepping down after serving in the role since 2014.
