Consumer Reports Named to Fast Company’s 2026 List of the World’s Most Innovative Companies

Recognition honors CR's Homeowners Insurance Bill of Rights and its campaign for accountability in a volatile insurance market

YONKERS, NY – Consumer Reports (CR), the nonprofit research, testing, and advocacy organization, has been named to Fast Company’s 2026 list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies in the Not-for-Profit category, ranking No. 8.

The recognition highlights CR’s Homeowners Insurance Bill of Rights, which launched in October 2025 and established nine fundamental protections CR says all policyholders should be guaranteed, regardless of where they live. The initiative comes as extreme weather events intensify across the country and insurers hike premiums, deny claims, and abandon high-risk markets entirely, leaving millions of Americans without reliable coverage.

Consumer-informed advocacy

CR’s Bill of Rights was shaped by hundreds of Americans who shared their real-life experiences navigating a broken home insurance market, alongside input from advocates and experts who have studied the industry in depth. The accounts of skyrocketing premiums, denied payouts, and canceled policies helped define the nine rights CR says every policyholder should be guaranteed, including a plain-language explanation of what a policy covers, fair access to coverage based on property risk rather than financial profile, prompt and full payment on claims, and insurance security during and after declared states of emergency.

Homeowners insurance is regulated at the state level, creating a patchwork system where protections that exist in one state may be entirely absent in another. CR has engaged with insurance industry groups and state legislators to urge them to adopt these protections uniformly.

Consumer-first resources

CR offers home insurance provider ratings and a home insurance buying guide, which includes survey results from nearly 24,000 policyholders. Of the 28 insurers evaluated in CR’s 2025 ratings, only three received a CR recommendation.

For 90 years, Consumer Reports has combined independent testing, journalism, and advocacy to protect consumers and create a fairer marketplace. CR is expanding that legacy by bringing greater scientific scrutiny and public accountability to services and products that have long escaped oversight.

“Our list of the Most Innovative Companies is about spotlighting organizations that don’t just adapt to change—they drive it,” said Brendan Vaughan, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “The companies we honor this year are redefining what leadership looks like in 2026, pairing bold ideas with measurable impact and turning breakthrough innovation into real-world value.”

To determine honorees, Fast Company’s editors and writers evaluate thousands of submissions in a competitive application process to create a global guide to innovation. Learn more about CR’s recognition.
