Cheapest Used Cars to Insure

In addition to your driving record, age, location, and credit score, insurance premiums also depend on what kind of car you drive. Cars with proven crash avoidance features, such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), or good crash-test ratings tend to cost less to insure. By comparison, sports cars that tend to get into higher-speed crashes, luxury cars that cost a lot to fix, or vehicles that are more likely to be stolen tend to cost more to insure, he says.

“Cars with top safety scores and strong crash protection tend to see lower premiums because they’re less likely to produce major injury or damage claims,” says Matt Brannon, a data journalist at Insurify.

Insurify looked at cars since the 2004 model year. It sampled premiums for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with clean driving records and credit scores of 600 or higher, and quoted policies with bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident, property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000, and both comprehensive and collision coverage with a $1,000 deductible each.

While it might be tempting to buy a highly depreciated used luxury vehicle, insuring it may still cost more than a simpler, easier-to-fix mainstream model, says Brannon. 

“If your vehicle is relatively cheap and gets totaled, it will cost your insurer less to replace it than a more expensive model,” he tells CR. “And because these models are widely driven, parts are easy to find and repairs cost less, which brings premiums down.”

Below, you can find Insurify’s list, including the vehicles’ nationwide average yearly insurance premium. 

Although they may be relatively inexpensive to insure, some of the vehicles on this list have low reliability and owner satisfaction scores.

According to Insurify’s data, these vehicles all cost more than $3,200 per year to insure with full coverage. Many are performance-oriented models, some of which are also more likely to be stolen. For example, the sporty Hyundai Elantra N costs, on average, over $600 more per year to insure than the regular Elantra. Other vehicles on the list are EVs, which may cost more to repair due to specialized parts and the specific training needed to work on them.
