Pillows
The Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Loft Pillow is made of shredded memory foam and excels in our tests for support, no matter your size or sleep position. It also keeps its shape well, showing little to no change in height or fluffiness in our resilience tests. Each pillow comes with extra foam, so you can adjust the filling to your liking. The only area where this pillow falls a bit short is in breathability—it sleeps slightly warm.
Despite the "cooling" in its name, this Nectar pillow doesn’t actually have cooling properties. Still, it’s one of the most breathable pillows we’ve evaluated and our tests show that it doesn’t retain warmth. This polyurethane foam and polyester pillow is also quite resilient and excels at offering support for side sleepers. Back sleepers, however, would be better served by the Coop Original.
Purple mattresses have made their mark on the sleep industry with their "GelFlex Grid" technology. You can get that same pressure-relieving and contouring comfort with Purple’s DreamLayer pillow. This adjustable fill pick is designed with a urethane foam pad, with gel, and it has two removable layers. While side sleepers may like this pillow more than back sleepers, smaller sleepers will want to try it without the extra layers first, our expert says. Larger sleepers should try adding one of the additional layers. This highly breathable pillow offers cooling properties and a washable cover. It doesn’t retain warmth, either. It was under $180 around July 4, so it may be cheaper closer to Labor Day.
Side and back sleepers will find the GhostBed pillow quite dreamy. It’s made of shredded memory foam pieces with a polyester fiber cover and can be customized to your level of support by removing some of the shredded foam pieces and polyester gel fibers. Our tests found that sleepers of all sizes and positions can get some degree of improved support by removing various amounts of filling. This adjustable pillow, which comes in a pack of two, earns just middling marks in our resilience test but aces our breathability test.
This adjustable-fill pillow from Layla marries polyurethane foam with kapok—the featherlike fiber made from the seed pods of the kapok tree, popular for being a vegan alternative to down. Our tests find that the model lives up to the material’s reputation, offering top-notch breathability in a soft and rather resilient package. Despite not having cooling properties as its name suggests, the pillow does not retain warmth. And while it offers stellar support for side sleepers, back sleepers are also well served by this pick.
Sheets
Boll & Branch Percale Solid Sheet Set
The Boll & Branch Percale Solid sheet set fits mattresses up to 14 inches deep and includes directional tags for easier bed-making. It scores well for fit, with average performance in strength, shrinkage, and wrinkling. A decent everyday option, especially if you value soft percale and thoughtful design touches.
This Brooklinen set, now 20 percent off for everyone instead of the typical 15 percent off for first-time buyers, will fit a mattress up to 14 inches thick. Our testers note that these sheets don’t shrink as much as some other cotton sheets we tested. They earn above-average scores for both fit and shrinkage, which means that although they do tend to get smaller after washing, they don’t change all that much over time. Luxe Core sheets are on the softer side, based on our sensory test. Labels along each side that read “short side” and “long side” make clear which way to make a bed.
Cool, breathable, and incredibly soft, the Buffy Breeze Sheet Set is a standout among synthetic fiber options. It earns top marks for fit and softness and holds up well in tests for shrinkage, strength, and wrinkling. Designed for mattresses up to 14 inches deep, these eucalyptus-based sheets stay smooth, stay put, and even include directional tags to make bed-making a breeze (no pun intended).
Duvets
Brooklinen Down Comforter
This duvet was the top pick for luxury comforters, and it’s always 15 percent off for first-time buyers. The current 20 percent discount only happens occasionally and tends to be the best discount we see outside of major sales (when it sometimes reaches 25 percent off). (Brooklinen also makes sheets that excel in CR’s tests and are also on sale; see below.) CR tried the down comforter, but Brooklinen also carries a down alternative option, and both are available in lightweight and ultrawarm versions. For those looking for a true down comforter that delivers on quality, warmth, and breathability, the Brooklinen is worth the splurge.
Buffy Cloud Comforter
Buffy’s Cloud Comforter is the softest choice in our at-home assessment. This is the usual sale price, though we did see it for $10 less recently. Thanks to its smooth, silky feel and fluffiness, the duvet is comfortable enough to use without a duvet cover. Made of recycled materials, it’s uniformly stuffed in layers to prevent clumping and shedding. The shell material is 100 percent sateen-weave Tencel lyocell.
Mattress Toppers
Lab tests find that this topper from Casper doesn’t allow users to sink in as deeply as others. This topper feels like an actual mattress, adding a touch of medium softness where needed without allowing the body to sink in too much. The two-layer cushion combines a layer of softer foam over a firmer base layer of foam. At a little under 16 pounds, it’s easy to move around, and its machine-washable zip-off cover made of polyester, cotton, rayon, and spandex makes it easy to clean. However, this topper can not be flipped. Casper’s toppers are backed by a 5-year limited mattress topper warranty. Just note that this is a final sale item and cannot be returned or exchanged. It was recently an additional $50 off, so you may be able to save a bit more if you wait until Labor Day, but there’s no guarantee.
The Lucid 3" Gel Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper, down to the best price we’ve seen in months, is made with ventilated memory foam infused with cooling gel. Designed to add an extra layer of cushioning to an existing mattress, it features a plush feel and a breathable construction intended to help improve airflow. For shoppers looking for a relatively low-cost mattress upgrade, it’s one of the less expensive options on this list.
This 2-inch memory-foam topper provides great support while still allowing you to sink into it. And at 8 pounds, it’s not overly heavy to maneuver. It’s flippable, but this deal doesn’t come with a cover (though you can add one on yourself), and a lack of corner straps means it might shift around. You can return Linenspa products for a full refund within 30 days of purchase.
Cooling Blankets
Guohaoi Cooling Blanket
The Guohaoi Cooling Blanket was the second most cooling blanket we tested. When wearing it for an hour, the evaluator reported it felt very cool and didn’t retain heat. The front of this blanket is constructed with nylon and polyester and feels like smooth, cool swimsuit material. The back is made from Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified cotton. The stitching isn’t the neatest and feels a little inexpensive, and the two layers aren’t attached, but you can often expect some shortcomings for lower-priced items, and the important thing is that this blanket has a cooling effect as advertised.
Heated Blankets
Bedsure Electric Heated Flannel Blanket
The Bedsure Electric Heated Flannel Blanket is thin but light. Though it’s cozy, it resembles an inexpensive fleece blanket you’d find at a grocery store. One side is striped flannel and the other is linty fleece. The flannel is not the best quality, but it does get hot. And it has the lightest wires of the blankets we evaluated. This is the price for a throw-sized blanket. Other sizes vary in price.
Sound Machines
Magicteam Sound Machines White Noise Machine
Compact and travel-friendly, the Magicteam Sound Machine packs 20 sounds—including white, brown, and pink noise, fan sounds, and nature tracks—into a device small enough to fit in a bag. Testers found it effective at masking external noise, improving sleep, and helping them stay focused while working from home. Simple controls and a built-in timer make it easy to use, though the small buttons can be hard to see in low light.
Air Purifiers
The HoMedics AP-T200 has impressive performance and an attractive design, similar to the AP-C500. It performs impressively on both high and low speeds and is easy to use. Just expect a fair amount of noise while it’s running. The major difference—this model is designed for medium rooms of 150-350 square feet so it’s smaller in size and has a smaller price tag. This is just $10 more than it was for Prime Day.
Room Fans
Dreo Air Circulator PolyFan 311
The Dreo Air Circulator PolyFan 311 is a sleek-looking fan that has the most features of all the room fans we evaluated, and its unique design makes it even more of a standout. It had the largest speed range, covering the lowest and highest speeds of the group. It also had the largest number of settings—eight in total—including four oscillating modes, among others. Its wind speed ranges from 2.1 to 6.4 meters per second, so you can feel good about its ability to cool down a larger space. Even better: It achieved this while placing second on our list of best energy-conserving fans.
