Ford and Lincoln are recalling millions of trucks and SUVs because their trailer modules may fail due to a software issue. If that happens while towing, trailer braking may stop working, and brake and turn signal lights may fail.

    More on Car Recalls

    The recalled vehicles are the:
    • 2021-2026 Ford F-150 pickup trucks
    • 2022-2026 Ford Maverick pickup trucks
    • 2024-2026 Ford Ranger pickup trucks
    • 2022-2027 Ford Expedition SUVs
    • 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator SUVs

In addition to passenger vehicles, Ford is recalling some heavy-duty and commercial vehicles, including the 2022-2026 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 pickup trucks; 2023-2026 F-600 SD pickup trucks; and 2026 Ford E-Transit electric vans.

The problem has to do with the integrated trailer module (ITRM), which may lose communication with the vehicle. If that happens, those trucks and SUVs would not comply with federal motor vehicle safety standards. Ford will fix the problem through a free over-the-air software update, or owners can visit a dealership to have the software update installed free of charge.

According to the automaker, owners may see a “Trailer Brake Module Fault” error message pop up on the screen behind the steering wheel if the ITRM fails.

Ford told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fires related to this recall, and that there have been 405 warranty claims potentially related to the problem.
