The Silverado 2500 HD (for "heavy duty") and its near twin GMC Sierra 2500 are true rough and tumble workhorses, but with enough creature comforts and modern amenities, they serve as versatile mobile workplaces. High points include a diesel powertrain that's cultured and brawny, and an intuitive infotainment system. However, for day-to-day comfort, we'd avoid the super-stiff Z71 suspension.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Diesel engine provides plenty of power both solo and for towing."

Anonymous, PA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"How quit this truck is!"

Mark H., CA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Lot of torque and great towing capacity. Better than expected fuel economy."

Barry B., GA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Two replaced engines - 6L v8 and one rebuild in first 1000 miles - runs fine now"

Anonymous, MI (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"It is easy to handle and easy to park esp if you back in."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Current problems with front end alignment and tires: however, my dealership Starling Chevrolet is working on this problem and I trust them."

Lawrence D., FL (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"It's very peppy. It shifts smoothly. It's turning radius is OK, but not great. The auto-downshift on long downgrades takes some getting used to. It is probably saving my brakes, but my wife doesn't like it. Handling on routine around-town and highway driving is pleasant. We have not had any emergency maneuvers yet -- not even an emergency full-braking stop (with anti-lock kicking in). We hope it's good, but we don't know."

Jody K., CA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Truck nearly drives itself. The truck is designed to pull a load and does so with ease. Driving with a trailer barely changes the way it handles, pulls up hill with ease, engine break makes down hills just as easy and effortless. The trucks suspension is amazing as well, making pulling a heavy trailer a joy."

Anonymous, CO (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Comfortable ride with easy handing."

Diana B., MI (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Adjustable seats remember settings"

Eric H., DE (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"There are large blind spots created by the front door posts. Any stop sign where the intersection is not at ninety degrees allow an oncoming car to be hidden behind the posts for a couple of seconds."

Frank L., TX (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"This has to be the questest truck I have ever been in. Ride nice for a 3/4 ton truck. Was disappointed that the rear seat do not have there own heating and cooling vents and controls."

Mark H., CA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Very quite ride. Plenty of power to tow and haul."

Barry B., GA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Extremely comfortable. Drives like a car"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"This truck is amazingly comfortable for one this size. I expected a much rougher ride, but I have no complaints. My wife feels the same way. I have the upgraded bucket seats, so this may be a positive factor. It is very quiet inside. Very comfortable!"

Donald S., CA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Seats are very comfortable. Cabin is extremely quiet for a vehicle with a diesel engine. Ride is a little harsh but that is expected in a 3/4 ton truck."

Anonymous, PA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"This truck replace a 2001 Chevy 3500. The ride in the 3500 was way too stiff when not hauling a heavy load. The 2500HD is much more pleasant -- downright comfortable -- for taking a long trip without a load. It's quiet, comfortable, and we got 19 MPG on the road, exceeding the performance of our 2004 Ford F150's 15 MPG."

Jody K., CA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Sweet ride"

Anonymous, TX (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"The diesel engine is super quiet."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"This is a great truck, but it's very expensive. It does everything I ask it to - tow trailers of different weights, haul equipment and passengers - without any difficulties. It has good value if you use it to its capabilities."

Donald S., CA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"Nice truck - when the engine works"

Anonymous, MI (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

"As with all new vehicles, prices are up dramatically with small gains in function. I think most of the price increases are driven by mandated systems (safety equipment, economy compliance) and marginally-useful Internet-connected gadgets that contribute little to the function of a truck (carrying and towing loads)."

Scott R., MI (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD)

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
