Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Anonymous, BC (2005 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

"The engine blew a plug. Not uncommon for the mileage, & could have been driven a short distance but my repair shop is only 8 miles & I had it towed. This was the only repair on this truck since transmission rebuild at 85k. Still has OEM brakes & suspension, a/c, all electrical, steering, etc."

A W., TX (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 4.5-L V8)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine failure. Defective cam or cam phasers."

J R., NE (2005 Ford F-150 FX4 5.4-L V8)

"Cam bearings and rollers bad. engine misses. I'm told that if I have it repaired I could still loose the engine. Ford wants $2700 to fix or $8000 for rebuilt engine. It sets in my garage undriveable."

Jack S., TX (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Lost oil pressure and damaged three rods and valves when the motor jumped time. Decided to have the motor rebuilt"

Steve M., FL (2005 Ford F-150 FX4 5.4-L V8)

"Faulty fuel injector caused major engine failure. This was a problem known by Ford, but they only extended the warranty on it until 120000 miles versus replacing the faulty injectors. The injectors failed at 121400 miles. Replaced engine with a new Jasper 5.4L v-8"

Alan C., VA (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)
Timing belt or chain

"oil pressure drop required $2K head gasket and oil lifter replacement with no visible oil leak evidence until failure. Miss-diagnosis by dealer service resulted in subsequent high speed blow out through pan seal led to timing belt and all tension related failure resulting in $6.8K week replacement of all external components at a NON-DEALERSHIP shop that found and fixed the problem. All of it could have been avoided if dealership shop knew what they were doing after multiple purchases. I no longer patronize this dealership."

Jerry C., MI (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"I thought the problem was with the transmission, but turned out to be the timing chains."

Audrey P., TX (2005 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

"Timing chain was deteriorating within the engine case. It was still intact and I could still drive it but the engine light came on and when the mechanic looked inside with a camera, he saw the chain was breaking into pieces. Cost me $2500 to replace the timing chain."

Edward A., DC (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

Anonymous, MO (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Faulty spark plug design results in part of spark plug breaking off in cylinder head when replacing the spark plugs. Occurred on 2 cylinders. Very difficult to remedy."

Lewis S., TX (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

Anonymous, TX (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Engine will run ruff when idling while stopped. Now have engine light on with a problem diagnosis of cam shaft. Found out the 5.4 engine has common problems of oilers for cam shaft. Have to take it in for repair."

Anonymous, OH (2005 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)

"the 2005 f-150 has what's called the Titan tick- it is a crappyly made engine, they made for at least 2 yrs before deciding it was crap and changed completely. ours is still running- amazingly enough, but most people have to have a new engine put in because of this problem. ford refuses to admit it's a widespread problem, therefore not paying for repair."

Paul E., ND (2005 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

What Owners Say

CD player

"The 6 CD MP3 player is an upgraded playing system. Typically used only the #1 CD Slot unless on a long trip, which only three were taken. During last trip the CD player locked up with 3 CD's and would not play whatsoever. However, the AM/FM radio continued to work. Have discovered the 6 CD player is known to be a failing system and have uninstalled two identical CD players which resulted in identical failures. Extremely poor unit for the additional incurred cost!"

After research, I decided to simply add refrigerant myself rather than taking it to a dealer/mechanic. The cost of the refrigerant was very reasonable and I decided when I needed to recharge the system, I would just add more refrigerant. Since recharging, the system remained satisfactory for nearly a year."
