Ford made many revisions to the F-150 over the years. In this version of America's perennially best-selling automobile, braking is improved, a revised six-speed automatic transmission boosts fuel economy, and the cabin is quieter. Standard stability control makes handling more secure. A spacious interior and a deep cargo bed are also pluses. On the other hand, the ride is stiff and the engine sounds unrefined when pressed.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. George S., ON (2009 Ford F-150 Lariat)

"The blender door that controls the hot to cold air failed twice since I've owned this truck. Its a $25 part but a $1000 labor fee because the mechanic has to take apart most of the dash to get to it. There should be a recall due to the thousands of complaints."

"The truck was leaking into the interior by the passenger handgrip. We took it in several times and they would do something and say it was fixed. When the warranty ran out they said that it must be the satellite antenna , they fixed it which cost money of course and it seemed okay in the summer without rain, but come the rainy season it started leaking again. They took it back in and now said it was the sun roof which of course was going to cost more money. We said since it wasn't fixed right in"

"Something in the center dash has broken and does not allow airflow to one side of the truck or the other. It seems to continue to try without success and makes a loud ratcheting noise when the truck first starts or when the temp is changed in the cab, or when the auto climate changes. Like it is trying to change the output location/direction without success."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Ford F-150 XLT 5.4-L V8)

I was determined that the interactive computer that controls the transmission had written a bad line of code. The software had to be erased and restored to fix the problem. I hate that Ford has an adaptive computer that changes the computer code in my truck... What Owners Say

Engine knock or ping

"Had an unusual noise--rattling sound--upon start-up and then at times when idling. Repair shop thought something serious with the valves and a possible total engine rebuild. They decided to do HALF the engine--not sure the terminology of what they did, but it involved some serious ($1000-worth) reworking of the valves."

"Not much to say other than the wiring harness before the fuse box was too light and it failed before it got to the safety of the fuses. Not to mention that the wiring harnesses on the truck throughout are put in harms way of tires, gravel, salt, rain, etc. and if you don’t watch out for these you will have serious issues with all of the electrical components in this truck"

Spark plugs or wires failure

"The spark plugs fail one at a time. The labor to repair is expensive. Replaced one and now another seems to be going bad. We have had major problems with the truck since we bought it. "Computer failure appeared to lead to engine replacement"

Anonymous, BC (2009 Ford F-150 XL 4.5-L V8)
Timing belt or chain

"It started with an exhaust leak on the manifolds which every ford over the last 15 years suffers from. Once the exhaust was figured out then you could hear the cam phasers starting to go and eventually it wouldn’t start, then it would be good for a while and then the starter would keep turning over, all on its own, and the engine wouldn’t start so the starter was being overused. We took it in to our mechanic who told us that every Ford truck on the road with a 5.4 L engine suffers from this problem. Lucky for me my father gets wholesale pricing for parts and after the truck was finished it cost me over $3000 which I hear is cheap compared to going back to the dealership because their parts are double the price of aftermarket parts. Ford has known about this problem for many years and has done nothing about it because it doesn’t fall into the category of consumer protection which would normally be a recall. In fact I was told that if you don’t do your oil changes on time and use the correct oil, the hole in the drive sprockets for oil to be lubricating were made two small by the engineers and other weights of oil cause this problem to start prematurely. We used the recommended oil all the time, otherwise this vehicle has been well taken care of but because of this well known problem, it was unavoidable. It’s now over 9 years old and is just starting to rust. (Another story, another day!)"

Mark H., SK (2009 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.4-L V8)
