With the launch of the redesigned F-150, Ford broke all of the rules for pickup trucks. From its much-touted aluminum construction -- shaving about 700 pounds from the old model -- to available small-displacement twin-turbo V6 engines promising the power of V8s but with better fuel economy, Ford shook things up in a category not known for innovation. It bet the farm on the biggest-selling vehicle in America.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The weight-loss program and high-tech wizardry under the hood pay off with an impressive 17 mpg overall fuel economy from the 2.7-liter turbo V6. The F-150's 2.7- and beefier 3.5-liter turbo-V6 engines provide plenty of punch even at low revs, with quick acceleration and effortless towing ability. Powerwise, you won't miss a V8.

“The front door and the back door rubbed”

Don W., AB (2016 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6)

“Windshield cracked and had to be replaced after the defroster automatically turned on when the truck was remote started in weather that was about 38 degrees F. What's worse is that Ford only warranties the windshield from defects (such as this) up to 12,000 miles. As we live in central Texas, it never got cold enough during the first 12,000 miles to know the windshield was defective. So much for 36K bumper to bumper”

Mike-Moye M., TX (2016 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Heated or cooled seat controls

“The cooled seats only cool for a short time then over heat. Ford has no solution and says they work as designed. As an Aerspace Engineer myself this is an unacceptable answer”

Anonymous, WA (2016 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

Nicole L., ON (2016 Ford F-150 XLT 3.5-L V6 turbo)

“Door latches freeze open when temperatures drop to -5c and door won't close until cabin heats up thawing them out. Ford grounded the truck as a safety issue then replaced all latches but it took 6 weeks to get the parts due to back order. Once replaced driver door latch wouldn't lock requiring another replacement”

I asked the dealer's service department about how to address this and I was told I could go to their aftermarket trim division and pay more money to have my truck customized by painting the trim flat black”

Anonymous, BC (2016 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7-L V6 turbo)
Sunroof

“Track was broken. Roof and sunshade would not operate”

Scott T., IN (2016 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)
Tailgate, hatch or trunk

“the tailgate design allows road dirt and debris to come inside. Even with a roll-n-lock cover things in the cargo area get dirty and wet. When driving on snowy roads, the cargo box fills with salt and slush. This is the fifth F150 Lariat that I have had and the first one with this problem. If you stand in the cargo box, you can see right out to the road, both on the sides and the bottom of the tailgate. Very sloppy design”

Malcolm L., TX (2016 Ford F-150 Lariat 5.0-L V8)

“There is a hole in the tailgate for the bed extender. When you get a load of dirt or sod in my case, dirt and debris falls into the hole and stays in the tailgate and oozes dirty water when you wash the vehicle”

Sharon T., CA (2016 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

“Water gets into the doors and freezes in cold weather. The latches freeze so the doors won't latch when attempting to close them. I took it to my Ford dealer in February. They haven't fixed it yet because the parts are back ordered”

Anonymous, OR (2016 Ford F-150 XLT 2.7-L V6 turbo)

“Drain tube was kinked at the factory, causing rainwater to back up and drain into the interior. At one point, the glove compartment had two inches of water in it! The dealer took care of it in one day and there have been no subsequent problems”

Kevin W., CO (2016 Ford F-150 Lariat 3.5-L V6 turbo)

“At just shy of one year old, while doing a slow-speed u-turn, drive shaft sheared completely off. Was not able to complete u-turn. No damage or reason for failure was found. Ford replaced it under my warranty, but it is yet to be decided if they will reumburse for rental car to drive the 5 hrs home (and then back to pick up truck). Concerned that it was likely manufacturer's defect”

Anonymous, CO (2016 Ford F-150 XL 2.7-L V6 turbo)
Electrical failure

“Computer would shut vehicle down while driving at random times. Ford knew about the problem and fixed it after we took the vehicle to them and a long wait as many others had experienced this problem!”

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

“My warning light came on, I took it to the dealership and they told me it was an ABS sensor failure, which also electronically disabled cruise control and one or two other features. They kept the truck overnight and I was back up and running the next day. The repair was covered under warranty of course. I consider this major because I had to be without my vehicle for over 24 hours, and it's a work truck”
