Fuel Economy & Emissions
Fuel Economy Fuel Economy We perform our own fuel-economy tests, independent of the government's often-quoted EPA figures and the manufacturers' claims. Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.
CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

Anonymous, UT (2002 Honda Accord SE)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"Part of car had been repainted when I bought it.. that is part that is peeling"

Anonymous, AL (2002 Honda Accord)

"Clear coat/paint has began fading badly on truck lid and top of roof. Noticed many, many 02 Accords on the road are fading in the exact same places. Has to be a defect!"

"Paint has faded and/or chalked to the extent that it appears nonexistent in some areas"

Anonymous, NC (2002 Honda Accord)

"Paint is chalking on the roof and some other upper surfaces"

Anonymous, SC (2002 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The paint or its protective glaze started peeling in 2015, but it was difficult to see much of a problem. In 2016, however, large areas of paint peeled, so the car body looks bad and isn't being protected properly. Currently, I can't afford to get it repainted/powder coated, so I am unable to prevent damage caused as a result of the paint/glaze breakdown"

Jennifer A., TX (2002 Honda Accord EX 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"The paint started fading and peeling at some spots over the last 4 years even though the car is parked inside a garage and away from the elements"

Philip J., CA (2002 Honda Accord LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NC (2002 Honda Accord)

"Paint thinning and body rust showing through. Car never kept in garage."

Nancy R., CA (2002 Honda Accord DX 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"Clear coat is fading/going away on roof, trunk lid and quarter panels. I see this exact same thing on many Accords with that type of body style. It had to have been a defect from the factory."

Anonymous, VA (2002 Honda Accord SE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"During regular servicing, mechanic discovered that the oil pump was leaking heavily, I had it resealed all else that was involved with the repair."

Anonymous, CO (2002 Honda Accord EX 3.0-L V6)

""check engine" light came on while driving - I pulled off, checked the oil level, and found that it was low. I had to add 1-2 quarts between oil changes. Dealer's repair shop said gasket had deteriorated around oil pump, which is not a surprise given the age of the vehicle. The oil pump and timing belt are close together so the timing belt and mechanism had to be removed to access the oil pump. The car was nearing the mileage level where the timing belt would be due for replacement, so that job was done at the same time. Expensive repair but it is worth it to me to keep this car on the road - I like the manual transmission and lack of gimmicky touch screens and so forth."
