The Pilot is an extremely functional and pleasant vehicle as long as you don't expect excitement. It performs the family-hauling duties of a minivan with some added machismo, and without being a poster child for a "Mom-mobile."

In that respect, the Pilot does a commendable minivan impression with its flexible seating for eight; a roomy, versatile, and feature-filled interior; and easy access to all three seating rows. It also provides a comfortable ride and benefits from a quiet cabin.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Honda Pilot owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"Maps app like waze freezes, or Android auto crashes completely, not recognizing the connectef phone"

Anonymous, (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"I have not been able to get Google maps to work with the Android auto system. Actually that is that is the only Android auto feature I have tried to use."

Anonymous, (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Apple CarPlay

"System locks up and shuts down."

Anonymous, IN (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"While playing back music and using Waze on Apple Carplay the entire Infotainment System stopped working. There was no playback - not even FM radio - the system would not shut down when the car was stopped. There is no mechanism to reboot the system without pulling the fuse in the fuse box under the hood. POOR IMPLEMENTATION. It is a computer running an OS, it will eventually crash, there should be a way of rebooting."

Jose L., CT (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"This is a well known problem by a Honda for several models that they have kept quiet. I filed a complaint with the FTC for false advertising based on the representation of seamless hands free interaction with Apple Car Play/Bluetooth. It stopped working properly 3 weeks after my purchase and they still have not fixed or replaced it 7 months later. It is a SAFETY ISSUE and Honda should be exposed for this inferior product."

Bob G., MD (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"Every several weeks when playing mp3s from thumb drive, infotainment system locks up, mp3s quit playing, and I can't switch to any other application. Must stop car, turn off and restart to be able to use infotainment system again. Dealer has no solution."

Anonymous, LA (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The infotainment system randomly makes a popping sound and after that becomes unresponsive. Sometimes the entire display (spedo) goes blank as well. Typically this lasts for a few seconds and then they come back on but aren't responsive. After this happens the only way to turn off the head unit display is to either disconnect the battery, pull the fuse, or (I learned recently) to attach a keyboard to the car and press "Alt + Ctl + Del" which resets the system. This happens at least once a month minimum. The vehicle has been in for service for the issue and after looking at it the issue went away for a month and a half and then started up again. I believe there is a class action against Honda for this issue."

Anonymous, NH (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Intermittent problem of infotainment screen displays: “audio connection lost”. No sound from any input. Seems to resolve after shutting off car and waiting a few minutes"

Anonymous, TX (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"Started a week after purchase. Entire infotainment display went dark, including dash. Speakers making popping noise. Literally, problem was not resolved by Honda until March 2020 (begin October 2019)."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The problem began in late July on 2019. It began as crackling coming from the speakers that would occur intermittently but steadily got worse as time went on. Eventually it got to the point where both the radio and the digital speedometer/driver gages went completely out. It was at the dealer on and off for approximately 6 weeks. They eventually worked with Honda engineers to re-do the pinouts on the infotainment system and gave it back to us. Within a week of having it back the infotainment system had another issue where it would not turn off even though the car was turned off and the doors opened. It believed that the car was still in motion. The dealer reset it by dis/re-connecting the battery. I have opened a case with Honda but was just told they are aware of the issue and engineers are working on a fix but they have no estimated time to repair it. Since I have no confidence in the reliability of the vehicle I became the primary driver and my wife now drives my other vehicle."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"This issue is tied to the other one I reported."

Anonymous, NH (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"The problem has occurred twice. The screen has gone blank and I have been unable to use the entertainment center (music etc) and the rear camera while reversing."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The speedometer and display screens both went out. The gauges came back on but the screen did not come on, checked fuses couldn't find any issues. Next morning went out to take it to the dealer and it worked fine and has since, 10 days now., Get home in ten more days and will take it to local dealer."

Tim M., CA (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The car has no cd or tape player, it uses a thumb drive. It plays songs alphabetically not in album order. Evenif you number the songs. No explanation or tips for how to fix this. Try listening to Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in alphabetical order!"

Tim M., CA (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Radio/navigation system totally failed with 650 miles on vehicle. No backup camera, no audio, and nav screen remained on even when vehicle turned off. Had to take to dealer as battery would have gone dead if I kept it in my garage over night. Service staff at dealer had no idea what had caused the problem. Car kept over night. Dealer called next day and said Honda was aware of a software issue that needed to be updated and instructed dealer to do a hard reboot of the computer which fixed the issue. Advised that I should be getting an email when the radio manufacturer had the software update available which should resolve the problem. Begs the question as to why Honda 'knew' about the software problem but had not advised the dealership service staff at the dealership I bought the car from!"

Tony O., CO (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Hardware replacement

"Related to previous problem - Honda thought replacement of entire computer unit would fix the problem. It didn't."

Anonymous, TX (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Entertainment system would stop working"

Anonymous, NH (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"About 500 miles in, recurring freezing and black screen. They had to replace the indash a/v unit under warranty."

Anonymous, CO (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Infotainment system stopped working, was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, MN (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"I have told you about the problem I had with only a bit over 600 miles. Radio showed volume off and nothing I could do would resolve that problem so no music, etc. was able to be heard. Backup camera no longer worked. Navigation panel would not turn off. I would consider this a major problem as the service department had NO idea what the problem was until they touched bases with Honda."

Tony O., CO (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Paired two phones to the system and worked well. Then not long after one or the other would have been removed from the system."

Anonymous, ID (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"The tuner unit quit working, and it was replaced."

Anonymous, FL (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Radio sound goes in and out with a loud brief ticking sound"

Anonymous, IL (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Rear entertainment system (e.g., DVD player, rear screen)

"I have issue with the audio and black screen on the rear entertainment system, and actually if the central audio volume is high it shut off and needs to let it cool down before it resume"

Anonymous, FL (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Routine software updates

"Tried to install updates as offered by Honda but either the system is unable to accept them or the process is way too complicated for an individual to complete. Very frustrating."

Anonymous, ID (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Software update fixes

"There is a problem with the screen going blank and freezing up. The did a software update to the entertainment system, and I have not had a problem since."

"With the AC in Automatic or manual I sometimes get heat out of the bottom outlets and cool out of the dash outlets at the same time."

Anonymous, (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Blower (fan) motor

"The upper vents in the dash are inoperative, for the air conditioner and the car is new. They said it needs a new motor."

E S., CA (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Condenser

"Air conditioner did not work when I purchased the vehicle brand new. Turned out that the condenser had to be replaced. Freon had completely leaked out."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Refrigerant leaks

"Seems that the good folks at Honda forgot to add coolant before it left the factory. Didn't find this out until the weather warmed up and the A/C didn't work, several months after buying the car."

Anonymous, (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"At about 8000-10000 miles the weather became warm enough to require A/C and it did not blow cold air when needed. Dealer found it low on refrigerant."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Condenser had to be replaced within 2 weeks of owning the vehicle."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Found Seams near rear of car were not crimped from the Factory and not sealed with sealant. this allowed water into the rear of the car. Mold and Mildew became a huge issue to where we couldn't drive the car. very unhealthy"

Anonymous, PA (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Squeaks or rattles

"Minimal barking sound when releasing accelerator at low speeds"

Anonymous, (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Dash continues to have rattles in it. Source cannot be determined."

Anonymous, (2019 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"We heard a definite squeaky whistle whenever the heater was on. The first time it was in to be checked, they replaced a part but this did not fix it. The second time in they were able to identify the problem as hose or connectors that weren't sealed correctly, causing the air to whistle whenever the heating system ran. They were able to properly seal the connections and the squeaky whistle went away."

Anonymous, SD (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Rear captain's chair squeaks loudly. Honda tried twice to fix the issue and then had to completely replace the seat."

Anonymous, SC (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

What Owners Say

Parking brake

"In July 2019 vehicle would develop a noise and vibration intermittently and randomly accompanied by excessive brake temperatures in the right rear wheel. Brought vehicle to the dealer I purchased it from twice, in July and September, and they were unable to duplicate or diagnose the issue. I had been able to measure brake temps exceeding 400F with an IR thermometer but they could find nothing wrong. Ultimately took it to another dealer and they found the right side parking brake cable guid kinked, and the cable broken along with the parking brake mechanism misadjusted. No apparent marks indicating a cause for the damage. They replaced the right side parking brake cable which fixed the issue."

Anonymous, NH (2019 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, VA (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint bubbling and peeling on front bumper. Honda initially would not covered under warranty. Once I called corporate they finally relented and covered under warranty. However if you're going to three different dealerships to find a dealership that would do the work under warranty. They did not provide a rental car initially either. It wasn't until a complaint on Twitter that they change they mind and provided me a rental car."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"The front radar system and camera failed completely within 300 miles. When it was replaced, it was mis-aimed so the vehicle slows down when approaching cars in the right lane, not the ones in front, which defeats the purpose of that feature. It's going in for a second try at repair."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"This system is too sensitive--it may be because the radar system is malfunctioning, but when in a construction zone or very narrow lanes, this system is maddening. I shut it off."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
