Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2006 Subaru Forester owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Vehicle ran rough. Subaru dealer diagnosed problem as valve guides dropping out of head causing misfires. They sent both cylinder heads to a machine shop to have valve guides replaced. Even though it was technically out of warranty, hey did all the w"

Larry B., OH (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Cylinder head "dropped" while driving. Able to drive car to nearby dealer. Was repaired. No cause was given"

Anonymous, NY (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gasket is weeping oil and will require replacement at a cost of $1,500 plus tax. Design of boxer engine has coolent in contact with gasket continuously even at rest which deteriorates gasket"

S P., SC (2006 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"rest of damage was caused by the timing belt breaking"

John M., IA (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The heads were cracked and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, TX (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Faulty head gaskets were apparent problem in many models. Has since been corrected. Subaru never did any recalls!! I did repair including timing belts, etc. Cost $3600!!"

Anonymous, WV (2006 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"The engine was burning oil that required frequent oil replacements"

Anonymous, PA (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Driving on highway 93 car started shaking.pulled to side of road, shut car off then on and still same Had car towed to Subru, repairs ,$3,279.00. Service advisor said this should not happen at only 70,00 miles but still had to pay repairs"

Anonymous, MA (2006 Subaru Forester)
Head gasket

"Head gasket was leaking."

Anonymous, ON (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I consider head gasket replacement on the older Subaru Boxer engines to be an expected maintenance item, but I expected to encounter it somewhere around 80000, not at less than 60000. Still, a reliable, solid engine."

"Leaking oil and was replaced"

Anonymous, IN (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Noticed moderate oil leak. Some oil in coolant. The Head gasket was leaking. One garage did unnecessary repairs that did not address problem. Shopped for a second garage who did the head gasket replacement for $2,500. Did not know this was a problem with Subaru."

"required at about 100k miles"

Burton N., WA (2006 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gasket failed at approx. 65,000 miles. Subaru agreed to pay for repair after I advocated/protested to corporate offices. I believe this is related to high engine temps that occur due to unusual burning/consumption of engine oil."

Anonymous, CA (2006 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Leaking head gasket caused the vehicle to fail the Maine state inspection, so I had to get it fixed. Cost $2500."

Anonymous, CA (2006 Subaru Forester L.L. Bean 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Known issue with these Foresters & leaking cylinder head gaskets. I own 2 of these cars. One was discovered shortly after purchased used with 60K+ miles & after multiple trips to the dealer it was eventually fixed after they admitted the known issue. Now trying to get the 2nd Subaru repaired by another dealer."

Anonymous, NY (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I was told when we purchased this car new they had resolved this issue which previous models had. Not so we found out. The dealer with a little persuasion went to bat for us with Sabaru and an $1800 - 2200 bill went to a manageable $300"

Chris R., PA (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gaskets fixed... But resulted in one complete on-road failure. Engine leaked oil a lot after head gaskets were redone. Required four trips to dealership to resolve disappearing engine oil and other problems resulting from dealership's botched head gasket repair job."

Wilson M., BC (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Head gasket leak caused antifreeze leak, oil leak and over heating."

M K., ON (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"had to replace head gaskets due to oil leakage at about 132K miles. this is a huge expense about $1800 and shouldn't occur in a modern engine. Subaru should have solved this problem years ago. It's a black eye for an otherwise very good car make"

Anonymous, NH (2006 Subaru Forester XT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Chris R., PA (2006 Subaru Forester X 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Scheduled timing belt replacement

Oil leaks

"The engine design of the Subaru makes the heads prone to warping and leaking of oil and\or engine coolant. On ours, it looks like it might just be a bad oil cooler casuing the oil leak, but it may be the heads weeping oil. If so, it will cost around $3000.00 or more to get this fixed. Subaru knows about the problems with this engine, but generally won't cover the repairs. We find this unacceptable and it will result in us not buying another Subaru - we have owned four of them. When we replace this car it will most likely be with another Mazda."

Spark plugs or wires failure

"I believe most of the problem was because mechanics working in an independent garage received commissions for replacing parts. So it was to their financial advantage to decline to fix cheaper parts and wait until expensive parts failed. I stopped going to this garage where I had taken multiple cars for almost 20 years. Despite backfires, check engine lights, etc. the spark plugs were not replaced. Eventually the misfires fouled the catalytic converter which had to be replaced.
