Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

Subaru's popular Forester continues to put function in front of form. It stands out from the crowd, resisting the contemporary trend toward making SUVs look like sports coupes with descending rooflines and curvaceous bodies. Instead, the Forester aces the fundamentals with a space-efficient design, large windows, and big square doors. That recipe has resulted in the easiest access and the best view out of almost any vehicle, and one of the roomiest rear seats in the class, with copious head and leg room.

By adapting various fuel-efficient technologies, including using a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), the Forester delivers a class-leading 26 mpg overall and 35 mpg on the highway. Performance is decent from that standard 2.5-liter, 170-hp four-cylinder engine; an uplevel 2.0-liter, 250-hp turbocharged four-cylinder XT version is available. Unlike most modern small SUVs, a manual transmission can be had, but only with the base engine and basic trim levels.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Subaru Forester owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"When it is dark out and no light is reflecting back on the rear view camera (as it would be when the reverse lights are reflecting off a wall or a street light is shining on the rear of the car), the display screen has "snow" making it difficult to see the camera image. The less light that reflects back on the camera, the more "snow" appears"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Eyesight system stops being operational when there is a storm"

Anonymous, QC (2016 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Camera sensors malfunction when temps drop below freezing"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The forward sensors turn off with no apparent reason. Have had dealership reboot the system and they found no issues. The system did not record most of the instances in which the system disengaged itself"

Albert W., CO (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Camera does not work when weather is too cold, 20's or before car is very warm in winter"

Lydia K., MA (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"front cameras would not continue working reliably after 3000 miles. continually stopped working within 3 miles of beginning drive. without the cameras all other safety driving functions failed. first dealership did not diagnose or address the problem correctly. second dealership diagnosed the problem and replaced the front cameras immediately. Issue resolved."

Albert W., CO (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
CD player

"I complained on a Subaru survey about the dealer not addressing the problem and a few days later I received a call from Subaru. The rep told me that the system is not designed for audio book CDs and that was the cause of my problem. That was crazy. It had to do with the GPS plugged into the cigarette lighter and their software"

Larry T., FL (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen difficult to see

"Hard to see the display and speedomerder"

Sodiri K., MA (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"display screen freezes. subaru is going to replace"

Regis K., NC (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The display screen mileage does not always advance when I'm driving, making the distance to empty stat unreliable."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Subaru Forester 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The display screen will go blank or freeze up at seemingly random times. It will not happen for months and then repeatedly happen. It will usually solve itself after I shut the car off and turn it back on. When it freezes though the radio still works yet I can't control it via the screen, the buttons on the wheel, or even the physical volume knob. It is extremely frustrating as I have the display unit replaced twice since I have owned the vehicle and it still causes me issues. Since the problem solves itself I haven't replaced the current unit yet. I replaced it twice before because the screen eventually went completely blank and wouldn't turn on no matter what. Though even when this happened the radio still functioned. It is extremely frustrating but I will just deal with the occasional freezing. It seems to happen when it is particularly hot or cold but I haven't tracked it thoroughly enough to determine that as the cause. It is not consistent when it freezes up either, as in sometimes when I start the car it will be frozen and other times it will freeze up after I have been driving. I don't even have to be touching it when it freezes. One failure mode is that I go to change something and it is frozen. Another failure mode is it will start scrolling through the channels by itself or copying the current channel slot into the slots below (which is a pain because I then have to go and fix that when it unfreezes). When it is doing this scrolling it does not respond to any touches or input from the wheel controls."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Occasionally the display freezes and the only way to resolve it is pulling over, turning off the engine and re-starting the car."

Philip H., CT (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen and entire system freezes including steering wheel controls. I have to stop, turn off and restart the car to reset. Initially an occasional issue, now more frequent"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The infotainment system froze while using a GPS plugged into the cigarette lighter and listening to an audio book. Couldn't stop the book of change volume or turn it off. We were driving through Atlanta and needed to hear the GPS. Bluetooth also mysteriously turns off"

Larry T., FL (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes, the screen freezes, all the controls become nonfunctional. If the radio is on it stays on, volume can't be controlled, etc.. Generally, turning the car ignition off and back on resolves, difficult to do if you're on the road. :-) It's been mentioned at servicing more than two times and has not been resolved"

William T., OH (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"External temperature display freezes on a temperature for a day or two, then unfreezes."

Anonymous, AB (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This issue will happen randomly, and probably every few months it will occur. The screen is on but will not respond to any touch input. This renders the radio useless. I have not found any external reason as to why this occurs, it has happened in every season/weather and at any time of day. It can happen upon starting up the car and mid drive. It tends to resolve itself, but I have not found any trick to get it to return to normal, it just fixes itself when it wants. I have had the display screen replaced a few times because of this issue and the display screen going black."

Kyle P., NJ (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Attempting to change radio station caused the audio unit to lockup. Could not change stations or audio source. Turning of the engine and restarting fixed the problem. Has not happened again...yet."

Anonymous, CT (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display screen has a mind of it's own. It will skip forwards and backwards without touching it. This creates a safety hazard. Also, it does not remember what it was doing between connections with the iphone. If I'm connected to the Iheart app the system defaults to the music app instead."

Michael C., ID (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"at minus 20 celcius and colder(live in Canada) i had the yellow advisement lights on for check engine, cruise control, whiper, transmission, etc, pratically every days, and one time it was a red stering and the power stering was off for two days.Subaru was not able to repair it and the problem resolve by itself with warm temperature."

Anonymous, QC (2016 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"The display screen has gone blank on my Subaru multiple times. It renders the display useless, obviously, but it is extremely annoying as the display is used for the radio and the backup camera. It happens at completely random times. Start up the car, screen wont turn on. Mid drive, screen just goes blank. Has happened in winter and summer. I have had the dealership replace the display unit 2 or 3 times. It is covered under the warranty but they have offered no explanation as to why this occurs. The last time I had it replaced I explained how I have had to do this multiple times and asked what would happen if this occurred after my warranty was up. I received a very non-committal oh Subaru is pretty good with fixing these things after the warranty so you probably won't have to pay. I don't want probably I want to know that if this issue occurs after the warranty expires (which given the track record it probably will) that I won't have to shell out cash for this reoccurring issue that is not my fault at all. Very annoying."

"You CANNOT pair iPhones an use voice control to "play a song, album, or artist" wirelessly. You must connect it with a USB cable according to Suburu corporate offices. That's not what the salesman promised or the dealership service dept knew. Also the radio is terrible. It flicks from HD to non HD (worse than my 1996 Honda's standard radio) 10-12 times per mile right in Silicon Valley! TERRIBLE. Also the clock does not automatically change at daylight savings when you click AUTO. They ga"

"iPod model was listed as compatible with the subaru, but as it was with my 2010, the same problem exists....iPod does not function properly with a subaru, though the manual says it should. dealer could not find the problem and i cannot use my iPod with my own music selections."

In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The dimmer didn’t work, still isn’t working perfectly. The navigation system got completely screwed up by the electrical system problems; the first dealer did not repair it when I took it in. It took four trips to 3 dealers to get it repaired. Had problems with nearby dealers willingness to take care of the problem while under warranty. I purchased it from a dealer several miles away from my home. The problems with the electrical system caused the GPS system to fail. To be fair, I had complications from cataract surgery that prevented me from driving for 3 months."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the system keeps cutting in with traffic jam ahead when there is no traffic, maybe once or twice a day. The routes recommended are sometimes 50% longer than the fastest route"

"Difficult to operate Unclear direction"

Vern M., CA (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My trunk would not open and the service department said they had to reset the computer. In doing so, my navigation system went haywire. I had to take it back in, have them “clean” the gps and redo the updates. After that it was fine. Service didn't think the 2 were related but all I know is that the gps was fine before they reset the electronics, but not after. Also, I had a “pressure gauge” for one of the tires reading incorrectly and the dash light saying I needed air in my tires would not go off."

Brenda W., CA (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"periodic freezing of the GPS map on a road trip. The car must be stopped, turned off and restarted to get the GPS to continue working. Subaru and the GPS manufacturer have not been able to figure out the cause of the problem"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"This navigation system is absolutely unusable. Even after instruction from the dealer, we found it to be overly complicated and inaccurate. I would consider buying another brand for this problem alone"

David S., WA (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"slow and sometimes inaccurate info"

R S., IL (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"we were driving from Louisville to Cleveland. Unit decided not to work -- fortunately I brought along my Garmin and through it and my iPhone we made it there just fine; however, I was disgusted the built-in system wasn't up to speed. Also I objected to the very high new map price they want for an update. I think when you purchase a new car these upgrades should be automatically included -- Garmin does that for less than Subaru wanted for downloaded information."

Anonymous, KY (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, SK (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Long trips(8-10 hours) caused the GPS and display screen to freeze. Subaru updated the software, still had the same problem. I turned off trip route logging, which cured the problem. My guess is the data exceed the allotted memory."

Anonymous, LA (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The navigation system does not adjust to different time zones and does not adjust to Daylight Savings Time. If I reset the clock manually, the calculated arrival time is off by one hour or more. My dealer was unable to solve the problem. They suggested that I drive the car into a different time zone and ask a Subaru dealer in the new time zone to fix it!"

Cindy K., CO (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Actually only one problem. When using the navigation system to go to a destination, after a while the screen freezes and you must pull over, turn off the ignition and then turn it back on, to get it working again. Dealer re-flashed the software once, but the problem continues, and I haven’t taken it back yet."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Routine software updates

"Gps updates are not mailed to you but rather you are supposed to do it via your computer. I am not computer savy—I prefer taking it to the shop and letting service take care of the update. In my case they had to do that because my gps went belly up. However it was done via a service person’s personal computer, not a Subaru computer. "The engine burns about 1 quart of oil per 5000 miles. Always has. I originally thought oil must be leaking onto the ground. I have since discovered it is a design flaw of the Subaru engines piston rings, that the company continues build to this day. Subaru America would not fix the issue (by providing a new engine/car) unless the oil was burning 3 times as fast. I've learn to add some oil every 2000-3000 miles."

Brett G., KY (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

They suggested that Seattle was a cold winter BUT it wasn't that cold; we rarely drive the Subaru (but run it weekly), we have owned or leased several Subarus both in our family and I have almost always had a Subaru and have several on my siblings and parents since 25 years ago, all of the East Coast mainly in NY and farther Nor"

"It turned out to be a bad battery and was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The battery that came with the vehicle had only about 300 CCA (cold cranking amps)- a ridiculously low number. The replacement I bought is about 710 CCA- industry norm. Coupled with my very low mileage (I walk to my local grocery store and telecommute) and the default Bluetooth setting- which slowly sucked battery 24/7/365 I ended up having to put the battery on a charger twice. I replaced the battery and disabled Bluetooth. This isn't a problem as if I get a call I need to respond to I pull over, park and call back. I also bought a 12v adapter for my cell phone so charging is not a problem. The local Subaru dealer (off the record) informed me about the CCA problem and how to get Subaru to replace the battery free of charge (which they did..). I had to figure out the Bluetooth drainage."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Steering -- vehicle felt unstable especially when starting out, for the first 15-30 minutes. Also when it required an evasive maneuver. Dealer 3 times checked the alignment, said it was good. Took it to a Firestone repair center and they found alignment was off in front and in rear. They also told me that the vehicle has electronic steering that other owners had reported as giving vague and uncertain feedback. On a Subaru Forester owners forum I have read comments from others about the handling -- one poster gave specific parts which can be purchased after market and installed to fix the issue of excessive body lean in turns. The parts were sway bars which were 4 mm longer than original factory parts, and also a steering dampener. I am considering getting these parts and having them installed. The person who recommended these parts said that before he had them installed his car had clown car quality handling."

Anonymous, MO (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Alignment needed adjusting 2 times in 1 year and caused me to buy new tires"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Subaru Forester)

"incorrect alignment causing uneven tire wear. Problem was corrected and tire wear is now uniform."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The car handled poorly, even felt unstable. It felt like it would roll if subjected to an emergency maneuver, like needing to turn suddenly due to a pothole, dog running out, etc. Took it 3 times to deal, asked them to check alignment. They reported it as proper alignment. Took it to Firestone. They reported front was out on one measurement, back wheels were out on a different measurement. Fixed the problem about 75%. They also told me the car has electronic steering which they said cuts down or changes the normal feel of turning the wheel. Later on a Subaru Forester owners forum I found several people that recommended installing an aftermarket steering dampener and longer sway bars. I haven't done that yet, but may."

Richard S., MO (2016 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car fishtailed on slightly slippery road at speed above 50. . Dealer said it was possibly alignment, as it was slightly out of balance. Internet research indicated others with this dangerous situation."

The car didn't have to be towed to the dealership, but we couldn't drive it anywhere else safely. The back of the car was sitting all the way down on the wheel well. Subaru did not cover the entire repair which was incredibly frustrating. It was almost $1,000 to repair. We have read that other owners of similar age Foresters are experiencing the same issue."
