The 4Runner is among the best off-road-ready SUVs in this price range. Despite retaining a body-on-frame construction, the 4Runner rides better than some car-based SUVs. While its cabin is very roomy and quiet, the 4Runner doesn't provide the nimble, carlike handling of car-based models. Still, it is sound and secure. Side- and curtain-airbags are standard.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"The vehicle has good acceleration for its size and can produce more at highway speeds for passing. It can confidently cruise at highway speeds without feeling stressed, even when hauling a 1000 pound trailer."

Marco L., TX (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"In the city it is good and responsive but in 4 wheel drive it exceeds expectations."

Anonymous, AZ (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excellent acceleration"

Anonymous, TX (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good visibility. Acceleration and handling are better than expected in a SUV"

Floyd S., TX (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"When you need power it is always there."

Daniel B., IL (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"rear bearing failed...ouch"

Robert J., IL (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"quick acceleration ,responsive handling"

Anonymous, MA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great acceleration and handling on highway or off-road, but shifting into 4-wheel drive often requires slowing down."

Anonymous, ID (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"I wish I would have bought the V8 because performance is lacking at altitude with the six. Also, the truck sways more than I think it should on mountain roads."

Monroe C., MT (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good acceleration, handles well off and on road, excellent braking"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Good acceleration and smooth ride, good off road performance"

Dennis L., KY (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"The V8 is a great engine. We pull a small camping trailer in the mountains."

Anonymous, CO (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"I have the V8 engine and pulls my boat just fine."

Anonymous, OH (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excellent in every respect"

Ronald J., TX (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"The SUV handles like a sports car, with very responsive acceleration and handling, making it easy to work through traffic on either city streets or highways."

Jim M., TX (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is fantastic. One needs to be well aware of the quirks of the vehicle when being driven over our potholed and poorly maintained roads - the vehicle tends to bounce a bit. One has to be ready for quick adjustment at all times to to maintain solid control of the vehicle."

IAN H., CA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"handles well in rain, snow and in sand. Handling is great in 4-wheel drive as well."

JEFF W., VA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excellent in 4 wheel drive."

Anonymous, WI (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Has plenty of power and is very responsive both in acceleration and handling"

JOE C., LA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration with V-8 is outstanding. Not sure I can go down to a V-6 ever. I am spoiled. My "Road Runner" handles well in all conditions, rain, snow, sleet, mud, rocks muck etc."

SUSAN R., CT (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Overall it is under-powered. Acceleration is weak."

JONATHAN K., CO (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Literally no engine drag at all. Take your foot off the accelerator and the vehicle plows forward nonetheless. You have to be careful in traffic. Requires excessive use of brakes."

Anonymous, WI (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"I am very pleased on how well it handles back roads. The traction control is outstanding."

FRED N., CO (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"rides like a tank highway noise"

Anonymous, NH (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Powerful enough for any of my needs, handles snow and ice very well with excellent four wheel drive"

GARY G., WA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Exceleration is more than adequate for my use. It can tow up too 5000 lbs, I don't tow anywhere near that neither will the average driver."

Anonymous, NY (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"I have the same problem on my 4 runner regarding a flat spot or hesitation in acceleration .Today I just cleaned the mass air flow sensor and replaced the air cleaner filter . I am hoping that this solves the problem . The Toyota dealer was of no help in resolving this problem and questioning me on my ability to determine what a flat or dead spot in acceleration. I am a retired licensed aircraft mechanic and past track in wheeled vehicle mechanic in the Army. So I am well aware of what a hesitation in acceleration is."

Louise J., NY (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"It lacks the power in the mountains because it has a six under the hood. The handling is weak on the mountain roads because it has a little too much sway."

Anonymous, MT (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"4WD is the best in the business"

Anonymous, WA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very generous acceleration. Exceptional handling while towing and the four wheel drive was very reliable."

Anonymous, FL (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"One of the best all-around SUVs ever made--acceleration with the V8 is impressive and the very confident handling with the X-REAS option belies the size and weight of this vehicle."

Graham B., MD (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is good. Excellent stability pulling a 3800 pound RV"

Frank A., AB (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Engine much stronger than a similarly-sized engine on previously-owned Ford Explorer. Handling (particularly stability) is also much better."

Anonymous, OH (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"The 4Runner is now 11 years ago but still accelerates very well."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Powerful, relative;y quiet and smooth riding, especially for a 4x4."

Anonymous, ON (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"I love the V-8, powerful enough for what I want. Handles great. Even with the high miles I have."

Fernando H., CA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"It accelerates very well, and the handling is impressively good, especially for an SUV. Again, I would take it over my fiancé's 2016 4Runner any day."

John W., LA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Acceleration is very good for a heavy 6 cylinder. Great power and torque, as expected for an off-road vehicle. Steering is responsive, but need to keep a firm grip as the front wheels can get pushed around by grooves in the road, etc. 4 wheel drive is excellent in snow."

Jack W., OR (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"acceleration is great, especially when we have the car loaded with gear. Handling on wet roads is not the best, could be the current tires. Much better in 4 wheel drive. Rough road performance is great. We don't get stuck!!"

Anonymous, WI (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"10 minutes my butt hurts"

Robert V., CA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Ride is very comfortable. My only compliant is the drivers seat. Gets hard on long trips and lacks lower back support"

Daniel W., OK (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are not very comfortable for someone with back problems and speed bumps and bumps in the road are punishing."

Carole R., MD (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats seem great in the 4Runner. Noises are at a minimum. The ride is pretty good, but it is a truck based vehicle so you tend to feel more bumps than I would like."

Scott B., UT (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"For a truck, the 2007 Toyota 4Runner has very comfortable seats with multiple adjustment levels"

Virginia H., DC (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seat comfort is ok noise is ok and it handles very well in 4 wheel drive, as good as almost any jeep."

"Excellent on all comfort levels as well as having 2 memory driver seat settings."

Glen B., MA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"For a 2007 model car, it is most comfortable and rides high like a truck."

John G., CA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Ride is stiff and a little noisy"

Anonymous, WI (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats are quite comfortable and you sit above most of the traffic. The cabin is quiet and that was an important reason for buying the 4Runner."

Monroe C., MT (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"in my opinion it is a little load when driving on highway. Sometimes I don't think it is sealed air tight."

Anonymous, NJ (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Not good for tall people - leg room is OK, but head room is not enough. Seat does not descend low enough."

JONATHAN K., CO (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"seats very comfortable on long rides; ride is very firm and stable yet still comfortable."

DAVID N., KS (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Stiff suspension, rides very rough, not recommended for long trips."

AARON C., FL (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Comfortable heated leather seats as daily driver and on the road."

Anonymous, SC (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"seats are very comfortable for long distance driving. Noise is good except at high RPMs."

Anonymous, OR (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"as mentioned in many reviews-the 4runner tends to handle a little jittery at highway speeds."

GREG S., FL (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Front seats need to be more supportive - they seem a tad short when other makes of vehicle provide more upper leg support. Long drives are thus more tiring."

IAN H., CA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Only bad factor is that some controls, mainly the radio and climate controls are difficult to see when wearing sun glasses. Otherwise a very good car."

JOE C., LA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"leather seats installed by the dealer begin to wear quickly, losing the color in certain spots"

Anonymous, TX (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Excessive wind noise"

KEN R., NC (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very solid and comfortable vehicle. Seats are supportive and show very little wear (cloth) after 10 years and 100,000 miles. For a body on frame vehicle, it rides smoothly and handles surprisingly well."

GRAHAM B., MD (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Ride is choppy and rough like a truck"

P H., IL (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"It's more than adequate."

Anonymous, NY (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"The seats on the Toyota are very difficult to adjust to find a totally comfortable position, The feature to lock in the position is easy to use."

Anonymous, WI (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Seats are firm but comfortable; manual adjustments are not the easiest to use. Noise level is fairly high. Ride is firm and bumpy, partially due to design and partly due to shocks being worn out. This vehicle is designed for off-road use, not comfort on a highway."

Jack W., OR (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"driver side is great, passenger side not so great. I am short, so when my husband drives, I feel as though I am sitting in a pit. I can move my site back and forth, but not up and down, thus creating an issue with the sun and glare being in my eyes constantly. My husband can't see to the right with my visor down, thus creating tensions. This could all be solved and we could be happy campers if only the passenger seat would go up and down in addition to back and forth."

Georgia B., VA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Great vehicle, comfort, reliable."

Anonymous, PA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Bad- I'm only 6'2" and the seat doesn't go back or down far enough. It also takes too long to heat up in winter. Good - It drives very well, it has much better useable torque than my fiancé's 2016 4Runner."

John W., LA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"very solid and sure footed ride, the noise level is very low and the drivers seat can be adjusted for great lumbar support. I never tire of driving this SUV."

R H., WI (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very comfortable. It does seem that the cushions are a little softer now, with a little less support but still comfortable over all."

Anonymous, TX (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Very comfortable"

Anonymous, NJ (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"for long trips, I feel the seat position leads to lower back discomfort"

What Owners Say

"Well worth the money."

"Still running great at 107000 miles. That should say it all. Also, low maintenance costs."

Virginia H., DC (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"I bought it for towing and sometimes off road driving. Great in snow that's not deeper than the bottom of the truck. Very reliable. Has never let me down. Plan to use it again on beach for surf fishing. if you can look past the truck like ride and gas mileage, its great. Not a daily driver but could be."

J Y., PA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"Price for this vehicle too high compared to the comfort riding level and noise factor. However, for off road beach driving which is reason I bought vehicle it is great. Never gotten stuck but on road not comfortable"

"Outstanding reliability, rugged and provides the usefulness I required"

Ian H., CA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"GREAT SUV, very reliable, biggest issue is the materials (rubber) around the window- is coming apart, i am aware Toyota had some defective materials used on this model and I guess I got one of them. I owned other vehicles other models never had one to have the rubber around the windows crack and come apart."

Diane W., TX (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

Anonymous, VA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"This vehicle is one of the best I have ever purchased. It has not given me an ounce of trouble over the years. The only thing I have had to replace in almost 9 years was tires!"

PETER F., NY (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"I bought this vehicle used with approximately 70,000 miles on it in 2011. I wanted a 4Runner of this vintage, but because they held their value so well I wasn't happy about how much I had to pay."

E F., CO (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"previous vehicle was 1996 4runner. the 07 is built with cheaper materials and no manual transmission. The '96 body was stronger, better built and manual trans. was a better experience for offroad driving."

GREG S., FL (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"This is the most reliable and best handling vehicle that I have ever owned! I owe part of its reliability to the service provided by my Toyota Dealership in Lincoln, NE. I keep asking me to trade for a newer 4R, but I always refuse because has only gained its half-life."

WARDER S., NE (2007 Toyota 4Runner)

"exterior body parts fell off (plastic), front wheel bearings failed"

Anonymous, PA (2007 Toyota 4Runner)
